If cnblm3_1.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest repair is to remove the damaged Canon printer installation and install the correct driver for your exact printer model.
Do not start by copying a loose DLL into System32. A Canon printer driver is installed as a complete package, including driver instructions, catalog files, dependencies, and DLLs. Windows stages that package in its Driver Store, so replacing one file manually can leave the actual driver installation broken.
What cnblm3_1.dll is
Public file records attribute cnblm3_1.dll to CANON INC. and describe it as part of the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver. No authoritative Canon page publicly maps this filename to one specific printer model, so the filename alone cannot identify your printer.
It is not established as:

Some public indexes report the file as a 32-bit component, while other records show contradictory architecture and Driver Store information. A 32-bit printer component can legitimately exist on 64-bit Windows, but you should obtain it through the correct Canon package rather than choosing a DLL based on its reported size, hash, or bitness.

A normal Windows printer-driver package may be stored below:

The exact folder is controlled by the driver package, Windows version, architecture, and printer model. A copy found in System32 is not automatically genuine.
What the error message means
You may see messages such as:
The program can't start because cnblm3_1.dll is missing from your computer.
There was a problem starting cnblm3_1.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
cnblm3_1.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
These are Windows loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that cnblm3_1.dll needs.
The error commonly appears when installing a Canon printer, launching a Canon utility, or sending a print job. It can also follow antivirus quarantine, a failed driver update, or replacement of an older driver by Windows Update.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix because it restores the DLL together with the files and configuration that use it.
- Find the exact printer model on the printer label, its control panel, or the existing Windows printer entry.
- Open Canon’s official support and download portal in your browser.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select Windows 11 or Windows 10 as appropriate, including the correct system architecture if Canon presents that choice.
- Download the current printer driver or complete Canon software package.
- Do not run the installer yet if the existing installation is visibly broken.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer. Right-click it and select Run as administrator if the installer does not start normally.
- Reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Finish the setup and print a test page.
If the printer appears in Windows but Canon software still reports the DLL error, remove the printer queue and reinstall the Canon software package rather than adding the same queue repeatedly.
A successful repair usually has three signs: the Canon installer completes without the DLL message, the Canon utility opens normally, and a Windows test page prints. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the next fix instead of copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Remove the old driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Removing a printer queue does not always remove its driver package. Clear the device entry when the first reinstall leaves behind a damaged installation.

- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device or a similar deletion option, select it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific Canon package again.
Device Manager may show more than one Canon entry. Do not remove unrelated printers or shared devices. If the driver is still present, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select Printer server properties, open the Drivers tab, select the obsolete Canon driver, and choose Remove. If Windows offers to remove both the driver and driver package, do so only when you have confirmed that another working printer does not depend on it.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Older printer components can be quarantined when security software has insufficient reputation information, even when the surrounding Canon installation is legitimate.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnblm3_1.dll, Canon software, or the printer installer. - Review the original file path and the detection details.
- Do not restore the file solely because its filename matches the error.
- If the file came from a Canon installer or a Canon Driver Store package, reinstall that signed package instead.
- Run a scan after reinstalling.
If you inspect the file manually, right-click it, select Properties, and look for a Digital Signatures tab. Check the signer, original location, and parent installation. A file with this name in a temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory is suspicious.
Never disable antivirus protection just to copy a DLL from a download site. If security software repeatedly removes the official installer’s file, keep the detection details and contact Canon or your security vendor rather than forcing the file back into Windows.
Fix 4: Use Windows Update and add the printer again
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Windows Update can provide a compatible printer driver, and it may correct a package that was replaced or invalidated during a system update.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available printer or hardware updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for the Canon printer to appear.
- Select it and complete setup.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update first, followed by the printer manufacturer’s official support page when Windows does not provide a suitable driver. If the printer works with Windows’ built-in class driver but Canon utilities still fail, the printing hardware may be fine while the Canon software package remains damaged.
Older Canon drivers may not support every current Windows release or ARM device. If Canon does not offer a compatible package for your model, use the driver Windows provides or check Canon’s regional support guidance rather than substituting a DLL from another release.

Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, system files were damaged, or the problem began with broader operating-system corruption. They are not a guaranteed way to restore a third-party Canon DLL.

- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon utility or print queue again.
DISM should run before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows files; it normally does not know how to reconstruct a missing Canon printer-driver package.

Fix 6: Clean the Driver Store carefully
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
Use this advanced step only when an old Canon package keeps reinstalling itself or the normal uninstall process fails.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- List third-party driver packages:
pnputil /enum-drivers
- Read the output and identify the Canon package by its provider, class, or associated printer model.
- Note its Published Name, which usually resembles
oem##.inf. - Remove only the confirmed obsolete package:
pnputil /delete-driver <PublishedName> /uninstall
Replace <PublishedName> with the actual published name, such as oem42.inf.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package.
Do not guess the oem##.inf number. Deleting the wrong package can disable another working printer or device. Do not remove a package shared by another Canon printer that still works.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 cnblm3_1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that cnblm3_1.dll should be registered this way. Registration cannot restore a missing dependency, rebuild a printer queue, or recreate the Canon Driver Store package.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears in the error. No verified evidence identifies any of those runtimes as a requirement specific to this DLL. Install them only when a separate, clearly identified application reports that dependency.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad repair
A loose download can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible driver build, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. It may also satisfy the filename check while leaving the Canon installer, catalog, and printer configuration broken.
Use Windows Update or Canon’s official support portal instead. A signed driver package lets Windows validate and stage the related files together.

Capture the full error text, the exact Canon printer model, Windows version and build, the path where Windows looked for cnblm3_1.dll, and the related Event Viewer entry.

- Look for an error at the time the Canon utility or print job failed.
