msadcor.dll Not Found: MDAC Checks for Windows 11 and 10

“ The program can’t start because msadcor.dll is missing from your computer.” Other messages include “The code execution cannot proceed because msadcor.dll was not found” and “Error loading msadcor.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

msadcor.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Data Access Components file. Its documented description is Remote Data Services Data Control Resources, and it belongs to the older MDAC data-access stack used by some legacy applications and database tools.

Which fix applies to you

Start with the situation that matches your error:

  • Only one old program reports the error: Repair or reinstall that program first.
  • The error appeared after antivirus activity: Check quarantine and security history before replacing anything.
  • Several programs or Windows components are failing: Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • The program expects old database components: Use the application vendor’s supported installer and operating-system guidance. Do not install MDAC randomly on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: msadcor.dll may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
  • The problem began after a Windows upgrade or disk failure: Check system integrity and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
  • You are considering a DLL download site: Do not download an isolated replacement. MDAC components were released as matched sets.

What msadcor.dll does

msadcor.dll is a resource DLL. It supplies resource strings and support data for Remote Data Services Data Control rather than acting as a general-purpose runtime that every Windows program needs.

Microsoft’s MDAC manifests list it with related files such as msadco.dll, msadcs.dll, msadce.dll, ADO, OLE DB, and other data-access components. You can compare the file’s historical identity with Microsoft’s MDAC 2.1 file list and MDAC 2.8 release manifest.

Historically, it was installed in a location similar to:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSADCmsadcor.dll

On a 64-bit computer, 32-bit components may instead appear below a Program Files (x86) path. The exact location depends on the Windows release, architecture, and MDAC or WDAC generation.

MDAC was integrated into older Windows releases. From Windows Vista onward, Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC, is integrated into the operating system and serviced with Windows. Microsoft describes this transition in its MDAC and WDAC version history.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program

This is the best first repair when one application displays the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the program’s repair option

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the program that produces the msadcor.dll message.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

Some desktop programs do not expose Repair in Settings. Check the program’s Start menu folder, launcher, or original installer for options named Repair, Verify files, or Modify.

A successful repair normally allows the affected program to start without the DLL message. If the error remains, return to the same menu and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. For traditional desktop software, uninstalling and reinstalling from the developer’s official installer is usually more reliable.

Reinstall from the correct installer

  1. Back up the program’s documents, databases, profiles, or license information.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download or obtain the installer from the application developer or your organization’s original software source.
  5. Install the same architecture the program expects.
  6. Restart again if the installer requests it.
  7. Run the application once as administrator by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.

Do not copy msadcor.dll into the application folder as a substitute for reinstalling. A private copy can have the wrong architecture or version and may load instead of the supported component.

If the program is very old, check whether its vendor supports Windows 10 or Windows 11. Some applications were built for older Windows and older MDAC behavior. In that case, compatibility settings or a supported replacement may be necessary, and a modern Windows repair alone may not resolve the application’s dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate file, especially when an old application has an unusual installer or an outdated component.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving the affected program or msadcor.dll.
  5. Confirm the file path and the parent application.
  6. Update Windows Security definitions.
  7. Restore the file only when it is located where the legitimate application or Windows component installed it and its digital signature is valid.
  8. Start the application again.

If the file is unsigned, located in a temporary folder, or associated with an unknown program, do not restore it. Remove the application and reinstall it from its official source. You can also submit the file to your security vendor for analysis.

A quarantine event followed by a missing-file message strongly suggests that security software changed the installation. Restoring an isolated DLL may not be enough if related MDAC files were also removed, so reinstalling the parent application is often the cleaner repair.

Fix 3: Install Windows updates, then repair system components

Use this path when multiple applications are affected, the file appears to be part of Windows, or the problem began after an interrupted update or system failure.

Install updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check again for updates after the restart.

Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.

If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully and SFC says it repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem is more likely to be the application installation, a missing dependency, wrong architecture, or compatibility rather than Windows system corruption.

Running these commands repeatedly without recording what changed rarely helps. If you want a guided way to identify damaged components instead of manually comparing repair output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application’s installation.

Fix 4: Check the application’s architecture and dependencies

A 32-bit application can require 32-bit data-access components even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that placing a 32-bit DLL in System32 is correct: on 64-bit Windows, System32 commonly contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit system binaries.

Identify the application before checking locations:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut and choose Open file location.
  2. Note the installation directory and executable name.
  3. Open Task Manager while the program is running.
  4. Check whether the application is identified as 32-bit where Windows displays that information.
  5. Check the application vendor’s documentation for its required MDAC, WDAC, database provider, or runtime package.
  6. Repair or reinstall using the matching installer.

If Windows says “The specified module could not be found” while msadcor.dll is visibly present, a dependency may be missing. That wording does not prove that msadcor.dll itself is absent. The application’s installer should restore the complete, compatible set of components.

Fix 5: Do not install MDAC 2.8 generically on Windows 10 or 11

MDAC 2.8 SP1 was a legacy redistributable intended for older Windows systems. Microsoft states that WDAC is integrated into Windows Vista and later and is not separately redistributable. Its MDAC and WDAC FAQ explains why modern Windows should not be treated as though it needs a standalone MDAC installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an old program specifically requires a legacy MDAC package:

  1. Record the exact application name and version.
  2. Check the developer’s installation instructions.
  3. Confirm that the package supports your Windows version.
  4. Use the vendor’s approved installer or deployment method.
  5. Do not extract one DLL from the package and distribute it manually.

Microsoft warns that manually redistributing individual MDAC modules is unsupported because the components have complex interdependencies. A package designed for Windows 2000 or another older release may also fail or create conflicts on modern Windows.

Fix 6: Reinstall a driver only when the application vendor identifies one

Driver updates are not a normal first-line fix for msadcor.dll. Use Device Manager only when the affected program’s documentation or an accompanying error identifies a specific database, storage, display, or hardware driver.

For a vendor-provided driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page and match the driver to your Windows architecture. Avoid driver packages that do not identify the device clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through many driver versions can obscure the real application dependency. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns the failing dependency.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 msadcor.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. msadcor.dll is documented as a resource DLL, and there is no verified evidence that it requires manual COM registration.

Registering the wrong architecture can produce another error, and registration will not repair a missing dependency, damaged application installation, or incorrect MDAC set. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Verify the file safely

If you find a copy of msadcor.dll on the computer:

  1. Right-click it and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  3. Select the signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
  5. Check the file location against the application’s installation directory or the historical MDAC location.
  6. Compare the result with the application’s installer rather than relying on an isolated online version table.

A legitimate filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. A file in a temporary, download, or random user-profile folder deserves further investigation.

If every repair fails

Collect the following before contacting the application vendor:

  • The exact error text
  • The application name and installation path
  • Your Windows version and build
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The full path of any msadcor.dll copy found
  • Antivirus quarantine details
  • Relevant entries from Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application

If the failure began after a major system change, use Settings > System > Recovery to review available recovery options. System Restore or an in-place Windows repair may be appropriate after backing up important data.

FAQ

Is msadcor.dll malware?

The filename is legitimate and belongs to Microsoft’s MDAC or WDAC data-access components. A specific copy should still have a valid Microsoft signature and an expected location.

Should I download msadcor.dll separately?

No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version. They also do not restore the related MDAC files and dependencies. Repair the affected application or Windows instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is msadcor.dll included with Windows 11?

Modern Windows uses integrated WDAC components, but exact paths and builds vary. An old application may still expect legacy MDAC or Remote Data Services behavior that is not supplied as a standalone modern download.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by msadcor.dll or the application. Reinstall the complete application or its supported data-access package rather than copying another DLL.

Does Windows Features restore it?

There is no general Windows Features checkbox that safely reinstalls an isolated msadcor.dll. Use the application’s installer and Windows component repair where appropriate.

Can I copy it into System32?

Do not do this. The correct directory depends on Windows architecture and component ownership, and a copied DLL can create version conflicts.
