qagentrt.dll errors usually appear in one of these forms:
The program can't start because qagentrt.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because qagentrt.dll was not found.
Error loading qagentrt.dll. The specified module could not be found.
qagentrt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The 60-second answer
qagentrt.dll is the Quarantine Agent Service Run-Time, a Microsoft Windows component used by the legacy Network Access Protection Agent service, commonly named napagent. It was normally stored at:
%SystemRoot%System32qagentrt.dll
On Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1, repair Windows rather than downloading this DLL. Install available updates, run DISM followed by System File Checker, and restart.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the alert needs more investigation. Microsoft says Network Access Protection is unavailable beginning with Windows 10, so a current alert may come from an old startup entry, migration remnant, third-party software, or a malicious file using the same name.

Do not replace qagentrt.dll with a random copy from a DLL download sites site.
What qagentrt.dll does
Network Access Protection, or NAP, was an enterprise Windows feature. It collected information about a computer’s health and communicated that information to a NAP enforcement point or Network Policy Server before allowing network access.
The DLL supported the NAP client and was normally loaded by a service-host process such as:
svchost.exe -k NetworkService
Microsoft documents NAP on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and corresponding Windows Server releases. The platform is not available in Windows 10 or later.
That makes the operating-system version important. A missing file on an older supported system can indicate damaged Windows components. The same filename appearing on Windows 10 or 11 is not automatically evidence that Windows needs the file restored.
Is qagentrt.dll safe or malware?
The filename is legitimate, but a filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
A genuine copy should normally be in the Windows system directory and identify Microsoft as its publisher. Treat these locations as suspicious unless a specific application has a documented reason to use them:
- A Downloads or temporary folder
- A user profile folder
- An application’s unrelated installation directory
- A folder with a random name
- A location launched by an unknown process
Check the file path and signature
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows installation drive, usually
C:. - Open the
WindowsSystem32folder. - Search for
qagentrt.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
Do not restore a quarantined copy merely because its name is qagentrt.dll. The expected path, valid publisher signature, and a clean security scan should all support restoration.

What the error message actually means
“qagentrt.dll is missing” or “was not found”
Windows or an application tried to load the DLL from a location recorded in a service, startup entry, or application dependency list, but the file was absent.

The file may have been deleted, quarantined, or damaged. On an older Windows installation, a failed update or disk problem can also damage the component store that Windows uses for repairs.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that qagentrt.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Check the calling process and the Windows event logs before copying anything. The message alone does not prove that the application displaying it genuinely requires this file.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This commonly indicates a damaged file, incompatible build, architecture mismatch, or invalid replacement. A 32-bit or 64-bit label from a public file catalogue is not a reliable basis for replacing a protected Windows component.
Fix 1: Update Windows first
On Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 8.1, update the operating system before running repairs.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Update.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the service or program again.
If the error began after an interrupted update, forced shutdown, disk error, or servicing failure, updating and restarting may restore the component registration and related files.
Windows 10 and 11 users should also install pending updates, but should not assume that doing so will add NAP back to the operating system. NAP is not included as a current Windows feature.

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted system copy on a supported older Windows installation.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Run DISM first because SFC may need a healthy component source. Microsoft describes both commands in its system file repair guidance.

A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired damaged files. Test the original operation after restarting.
On Windows 7, the modern DISM /RestoreHealth workflow is not available in the same form. Use Windows Update, SFC, suitable installation media, or System Restore instead.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing whether the component store changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair remains the appropriate first step.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed the file because it was corrupted, modified, or mistaken for an impersonating file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
qagentrt.dll. - Open the entry and inspect its original path.
- Do not restore it if the original path was a temporary, user, or download folder.
- If the path was the expected Windows directory, the Microsoft signature is valid, and a full scan is clean, use Allow on device or Restore, depending on the available option.
- Restart Windows.
Run Scan options and choose a Full scan. If the file was found outside the normal Windows directory, leave it quarantined until the parent process and installation are identified.
Fix 4: Check the service and its parent process
On older Windows versions, the file may be associated with the Network Access Protection Agent service.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for Network Access Protection Agent.
- Open its properties.
- Note the Service name, commonly
napagent. - Check the Path to executable if Windows displays it.
- Confirm that the service uses a Microsoft Windows host rather than an unexpected executable.
Do not enable the service simply because its name appears in an error. NAP was mainly relevant to managed enterprise networks, and enabling a service does not recreate a missing DLL. It is not a useful repair on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
For more detailed background, see Microsoft’s NAP client architecture and About NAP.
Fix 5: Investigate Windows 10 and Windows 11 alerts
Because NAP is unavailable starting with Windows 10, do not copy qagentrt.dll into System32 on a modern system.
Instead, identify what is requesting it.
- Note the exact program, shortcut, or startup item showing the message.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old or unknown startup entry temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message disappears, inspect or uninstall the associated legacy software.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the program that created the entry.
- Uninstall it, update it from its vendor, or reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer.
Also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > System.
- Look for the event at the same time as the DLL error.
- Record the service name, executable path, and parent process.
A Windows 10 or 11 alert may be a leftover reference from an upgrade, an old enterprise tool, incorrectly packaged software, or malware. The path and parent process matter more than the filename.

Fix 6: Repair the application that displays the error
If the message appears only when opening one legacy application, that program may be calling an obsolete Windows component or carrying an incorrect private reference.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Apply the application’s current update.
Do not place a Windows system DLL into the application directory unless the developer explicitly documents that dependency and supplies the matching file.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the parent process points to hardware software
A graphics, chipset, or peripheral driver is not the normal source of qagentrt.dll. If Event Viewer identifies a hardware utility or driver package as the caller, update that specific package from the computer or device manufacturer.
For a basic Device Manager check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider and date.
- Use Update driver or install the current package from the manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use Device Manager to replace qagentrt.dll; it does not repair Windows service files.

Hunting through many driver packages manually can make it difficult to tell which change helped. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the application or Windows component that actually called the DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for COM DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. qagentrt.dll is a Windows service component, not a DLL that should normally be registered manually.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 qagentrt.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and does not restore a deleted file, repair its dependencies, or rebuild the NAP service. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or recovery tools instead. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not download and copy qagentrt.dll
Avoid DLL repositories and files attached to forum posts. A downloaded replacement can have the wrong:
- Windows build
- Architecture
- Language resources
- File permissions
- Digital signature
- Dependency set
It may also be malware. Windows does not provide qagentrt.dll as a normal standalone download. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching Windows installation source, SFC, System Restore, or an official Windows repair installation.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. That naming is easy to misunderstand, and manually choosing a folder is not a supported way to repair this service DLL.
Fix 8: Use recovery when Windows cannot repair itself
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, inspect:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM reports that the image is unrecoverable, try a matching Windows installation source with the repair-source options described in Microsoft’s Repair a Windows image documentation.
If the problem began recently:
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error appeared.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. Back up important data first.
If no suitable restore point exists and repairs still fail, use an in-place Windows repair installation where supported. Also check disk health and back up files before making further recovery changes.
FAQ
Is qagentrt.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes, when it is the genuine Quarantine Agent Service Run-Time in the expected Windows directory with a valid Microsoft signature.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is it required on Windows 11?
Normally, no. Microsoft says Network Access Protection is unavailable beginning with Windows 10. A Windows 11 alert should be traced to its caller rather than repaired by downloading the DLL.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that these runtimes normally install qagentrt.dll. Install them only when the affected application specifically documents that dependency.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may have a damaged or missing dependency. The calling process and event log must be checked before replacing the visible file.
Should I enable Network Access Protection?
No, not as a general repair. It is a legacy enterprise feature and is not available on Windows 10 or 11.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if antivirus keeps detecting the file?
Leave it quarantined, run a full or offline scan, and verify the original path and Microsoft signature. A same-named file in an unusual directory should not be restored.
