nettrace.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. When Windows or an application says it is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair the Windows component first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What nettrace.dll does
nettrace.dll is identified as Network Trace Helper and is associated with Windows networking diagnostics and the netsh trace functionality. Windows uses network tracing to collect diagnostic data, normally producing an ETL trace file and, where requested, a CAB report.

The usual location is:
%SystemRoot%System32nettrace.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit Windows components may also exist under:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
The exact version depends on the Windows release, servicing level, architecture, language, and build. Historical file inventories list examples such as these, but they are not a universal replacement table:

A file in the correct folder should identify Microsoft as its signer. To check it, right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature, and choose Details. Do not use a file merely because its name matches.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because nettrace.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because nettrace.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading nettrace.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “nettrace.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library nettrace.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. The file may genuinely be absent, damaged, blocked by security software, or incompatible with the process calling it. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by nettrace.dll is missing.
If only one application reports the error, that application may simply be the first program to expose an underlying Windows problem. It does not prove that the application owns the DLL.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
An incomplete update or damaged Windows component is the most likely explanation when networking tools, Windows features, or several applications are affected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Launch the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with component repair. Do not copy a DLL into System32 at this stage.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may remain at one percentage for a while.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Try the application or Windows networking function again.
Microsoft documents this repair sequence in its guide to using System File Checker and DISM.
The useful SFC results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with the application and dependency checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still fails, inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logor move to the repair-source steps.
Repeating SFC indefinitely will not repair a component store that cannot provide valid files.

It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the supported repair path.
Fix 3: Use a matching DISM repair source
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update cannot provide them, use installation media or another known-good Windows source that matches the installed edition, build, and architecture.
- Connect or mount matching Windows installation media.
- Note its repair-source path, such as
C:RepairSourceWindows. - Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual matching source path.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not use a Windows 7, Windows 8, unrelated Windows 10, or different-architecture file as a substitute for a current installation. A mismatched file can fail component validation or introduce additional dependency problems. Microsoft provides further DISM servicing options and guidance for repairing Windows Update corruption.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears only when starting one program, repair that program after repairing Windows.
Windows app repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, understanding that this can remove the app’s local data and settings.
Desktop application repair
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similar option.
- Complete the installer prompts and restart if requested.
For a game, use the official launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. If no repair option exists, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher.
Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix only when its own installation is damaged. It is not a safe substitute for repairing a missing Windows system component.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a file after an incorrect detection, or malware may have replaced a legitimate system file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn Windows Security:
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
nettrace.dllor a related Windows process. - Expand an entry to view its path and action.
Restore or allow a file only when the path is the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature verifies correctly. Never restore an unknown DLL simply because an application requests it.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely. If the suspected quarantine occurred more than two weeks ago, the event may no longer be visible. Run a full scan, and use Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.

A copy of nettrace.dll beside an unfamiliar executable, in a temporary folder, or in an application directory deserves further investigation. Do not replace it manually before scanning the system.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may load 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit process requires 64-bit dependencies. Windows manages the normal System32 and SysWOW64 locations; do not swap files between them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the affected application’s architecture from its official documentation or installer. Then:
- repair Windows rather than mixing DLLs;
- repair or reinstall the application using the correct installer;
- reinstall any runtime explicitly required by that application from its official vendor;
- avoid assuming that a Visual C++ redistributable fixes
nettrace.dll.
If the message says “specified module could not be found” but the file exists, investigate the calling executable and its dependent modules. The missing item may be a dependency rather than nettrace.dll itself. Event Viewer and the application’s own installation or repair logs can help identify which executable initiated the failure.
Fix 7: Update network drivers only when symptoms point there
A network-driver problem does not normally mean that nettrace.dll itself needs replacing. Consider driver repair when networking is also failing, Device Manager reports an error, or the problem began after a driver change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and review the status.
- Select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- If the adapter remains faulty, download the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows and test networking.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it detects as outdated; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and Device Manager or the hardware manufacturer’s official driver remains the appropriate source.
What not to do
Do not download nettrace.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL repositories can provide malware, an outdated Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with an invalid signature. Copying the file beside an executable can also create DLL hijacking risk. It often leaves the damaged component store or missing dependency untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Windows repair source, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation instead.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public metadata for nettrace.dll identifies an initialization export rather than a COM registration entry point. Registering it is therefore not an appropriate repair step and can produce another error.
Do not mix versions
A historical version number or file size is not proof that the file belongs on your installation. Windows servicing maintains component manifests and dependencies, so the correct replacement must come from a matching Windows source.
If the error returns
Repeated corruption suggests a problem beyond the DLL itself.
- Check Windows Security and run a full malware scan.
- Review Event Viewer for application, servicing, disk, and file-system errors.
- Run the manufacturer’s storage diagnostic if files repeatedly become corrupt.
- Use
chkdskwhen Windows or the storage diagnostic indicates file-system problems. - Repeat DISM and SFC after storage problems are addressed.
- Test the affected program from a new Windows user profile.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point predates the failure. Microsoft explains that System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files.
- If multiple Windows components remain damaged, perform an in-place Windows repair installation using matching installation media.
A clean malware investigation is especially important when a similarly named DLL appears outside the normal Windows directories, an executable behaves unusually, or the file keeps being replaced after repair.
FAQ
Is nettrace.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component named Network Trace Helper and is associated with Windows network tracing.
Should I put it in System32?
No. If it is missing, repair Windows through servicing. Manually copying a file can create a build, architecture, signature, dependency, or hijacking problem.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is it part of Visual C++ 2015?
No verified evidence supports that association. Installing Visual C++ redistributables is not the standard fix for this Windows component.
Why does a game report a Windows DLL?
The game may be the first process that calls a damaged or unavailable Windows component. Repair the Windows installation, then verify or reinstall the game if it remains the only affected program.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
No. nettrace.dll is not being repaired by COM registration. Use DISM and SFC instead.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
The error may involve a dependency, the application installation, architecture mismatch, antivirus action, or a DLL outside the expected Windows path. Identify the exact executable and continue with the application and security checks.
