The 60-second answer
ext-ms-win-ole32-bindctx-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows API-set name associated with OLE/COM binding-context functions. It is not normally a third-party runtime DLL that you should download manually.
Microsoft explains that API-set names are loader aliases. The name may not correspond to a physical file with that exact filename on your drive. The underlying implementation is handled by Windows components, with related bind-context functionality documented through Ole32.dll.

Start by installing pending Windows updates, restarting, and running DISM followed by System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
If only one game or application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer or launcher after repairing Windows. Do not copy a DLL from a random download site into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.
What this filename means
The ext- prefix and l1-1-0 naming pattern identify an API set. Microsoft describes API sets as virtual aliases that allow Windows applications to call system functionality without depending directly on one fixed implementation file.
That explains why searching for an exact file named ext-ms-win-ole32-bindctx-l1-1-0.dll can be misleading. Some Windows versions may expose the contract through a stub or mapped system component rather than storing a normal standalone DLL under that name.
The related CreateBindCtx function is documented as part of the OLE32 API and uses Ole32.dll. That is a useful indication of the Windows subsystem involved, but it does not prove that every Windows build maps this API-set name to the same physical file.
Public file listings have described copies associated with older Windows releases as small “ApiSet Stub DLL” files. Those listings are third-party metadata, not a Microsoft download catalogue, and they are not a reason to copy a file into your Windows folders.
See Microsoft’s Windows API-set documentation and the CreateBindCtx reference for the architecture behind the name.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- Windows component corruption or an incomplete update
- A failed application installation or update
- An old application that is incompatible with the current Windows build
- A missing dependency of the program that reported this name
- Antivirus quarantine
- A 32-bit application using incompatible or damaged dependencies
- A damaged Windows installation
If the problem affects several unrelated programs, suspect Windows component damage first. If one old game or application fails while everything else works, repair or reinstall that program before changing system files.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named API-set contract itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a dependency failure elsewhere in the application’s loading chain.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave system components out of sync.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected application again.
On Windows 10, Windows Update is under Update & Security. On Windows 11, it is directly in the left-hand Settings menu.
If the application still fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the named file.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, then repeat SFC. If it still fails, use the recovery steps below.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a legitimate repair source that matches your installed Windows version closely. Do not use an arbitrary folder containing copied DLLs.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems and identify issues before its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when only that program fails.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
First check whether the program has a repair option:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu or click the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Click Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button, use the application’s official launcher. Game launchers commonly provide Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similarly named option. Run that process, then restart the launcher.
If repair does not help:
- Back up the application’s save files or settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer or official launcher.
- Install the correct build for your version of Windows.
- Test the program before adding unofficial modifications, injectors, overlays, or replacement DLLs.
No reliable public evidence ties this API-set name to one particular game, driver, or installer. The application is often the program exposing a Windows dependency problem rather than the owner of the API-set contract itself.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can block or quarantine a legitimate application file, although restoring a file is safe only when you have established that it is trustworthy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection related to the affected application.
- Check its path, publisher, and detection details.
- Restore it only if the application came from an official source and you are confident the file is safe.
- Run a full scan before launching the program again.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the error disappear. If the file was found outside a Windows-managed location or the problem began after installing suspicious software, scan the computer and remove the untrusted program.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows uses Windows redirection and the appropriate 32-bit dependencies. Copying files between System32, SysWOW64, and an application directory can make the problem worse.
Check the program’s architecture in its official system requirements or installer. Then:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Download the correct x86 or x64 build from its official source.
- Install it again.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification feature if available.
Do not assume that a public listing described as 32-bit is correct for your Windows build. API-set behavior varies by Windows version and edition.

Fix 6: Repair a separate runtime only when its files are named
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the error mentions a DLL. This filename is a Windows API-set name, not a normal Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
A runtime repair is appropriate when the message also names a relevant file, such as:
vcruntime*.dllmsvcp*.dll- A specific legacy DirectX library
- A .NET installation or application error
Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads for Visual C++ errors. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime addresses legacy side-by-side DirectX SDK libraries, not Windows API-set contracts.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related driver
Drivers are not the usual cause of this particular API-set message, but an application that uses graphics, audio, storage, or other hardware may fail after a damaged driver update.
To check a driver through Windows:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after installation.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that button is available. For a clean reinstall, select Uninstall device, restart, and install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer or PC manufacturer.
Guessing which of several drivers is stale can take longer than checking them systematically. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues and identify updates before its full version installs them; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing the affected application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use Regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An API-set alias is not normally a COM in-process server that should be registered.
Running commands such as this is therefore not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-ole32-bindctx-l1-1-0.dll
It can produce another error without repairing Windows or the application. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when the command applies.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows
If SFC still reports unrepaired files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Review the CBS log with the path shown by SFC, commonly:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log - Retry DISM with a matching repair source.
- Restart and run SFC again.
You can also use System Restore:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. It may not be available if no restore point was created.
For severe corruption, use Microsoft’s supported Windows installation-media guidance to repair or reinstall Windows. Back up personal files first.
FAQ
Should I download ext-ms-win-ole32-bindctx-l1-1-0.dll?
Usually no. The name can be a virtual API-set alias rather than a standalone file. Random downloads may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match Windows, and copying them often leaves the real cause untouched.
Is this a genuine Windows filename?
Yes. It follows Microsoft’s API-set naming convention and relates to Windows OLE/COM binding-context functionality. Its presence in an error does not mean the application installed it.
Does the error mean I need Visual C++?
Not by itself. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the application also reports Visual C++ runtime files such as vcruntime or msvcp.
Why does the message say a module is missing when the named file is not on disk?
API-set names can be loader aliases. Also, a loading error can refer to a dependency of the requested module rather than a physical file with the displayed name.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I delete and replace files in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not manually replace Windows files from untrusted sources. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or supported installation media.
What is the most likely fix if only one old game fails?
Repair or reinstall that game, verify its files, and check whether its launcher or executable supports your current Windows version. If several applications fail, prioritize Windows repair with DISM and SFC.
