mfvdsp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Foundation file. If mfvdsp.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows Media Foundation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to Microsoft’s Frame Rate Converter DSP, which changes a video stream’s frame rate by repeating or dropping frames. A game, media player, camera application, or Windows multimedia feature may request it when starting or opening video.
What mfvdsp.dll is and where it belongs
Microsoft documents mfvdsp.dll as part of Windows Media Foundation. On a normal Windows installation, the expected location is:
%windir%System32mfvdsp.dll
Do not assume that one file version applies to every PC. The correct binary depends on the Windows release, build, servicing level, architecture, and installed component package.

A “module not found” message does not always prove that mfvdsp.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency or a damaged module loaded alongside it.
Choose the repair path first
Use the symptom that best matches your situation:
- Several programs fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that program.
- The PC runs Windows 10 or 11 N/KN: install the Media Feature Pack.
- The problem began after antivirus quarantine: inspect quarantine and repair Windows.
- The error appears at every startup after uninstalling software: remove the leftover startup entry.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows: investigate corruption or architecture mismatch instead of registering the DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from System32, multiple applications are affected, or the problem appeared after an update, cleanup utility, failed installation, or disk problem.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can restore the component files that SFC needs.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer again.
- Open the affected program.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. Test the application after the restart rather than assuming the repair worked from the command output alone.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can become tedious, especially when Windows has many damaged components. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional. For a file belonging to Windows Media Foundation, DISM, SFC, or a Windows repair remains the authoritative fix.
If DISM cannot find source files
Run Windows Update first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If Windows Update cannot supply the files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source from matching Windows installation media. Do not use an ISO or repair source from an unknown origin.
If SFC reports that it could not repair mfvdsp.dll, run DISM first, restart, and retry SFC. For deeper investigation, review the CBS log for the affected component. If repair still fails, use a matching installation source, System Restore, or a Windows repair reinstall.

First check the edition:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Look under Windows specifications for the edition.
If it says Windows 10 N, Windows 11 N, or a related N/KN edition, install the official Media Feature Pack.
Windows 11 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Add.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Try the affected game or media program after restarting. If the Media Feature Pack is not listed, confirm the Windows edition and install pending updates before trying again. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance explains the supported process.
Do not install the Media Feature Pack merely because an application mentions mfvdsp.dll if the PC is not an N/KN edition. On standard Windows editions, repair the existing Windows component instead.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports the error, the application may be damaged even though mfvdsp.dll is a Windows file. Its installer, video subsystem, or bundled dependency may be requesting the component incorrectly.
Try repair first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Scan and Repair, or the equivalent file-checking command. This replaces damaged application files without necessarily downloading the entire game again.
If repair does not help:
- Back up the application’s saved data or settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software developer or game publisher.
- Install the current version.
- Start the program normally.
If the installer itself fails because Windows cannot load mfvdsp.dll, repair Windows with DISM and SFC before reinstalling the application.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error appeared immediately after an antivirus scan, the security product may have quarantined the file. Do not restore it blindly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Windows system directory.
- Update Windows Security and run a full scan.
- If another security product is installed, inspect its quarantine and detection details as well.
- Restore a file only when the detection is confirmed as a false positive and the file is identified as the genuine Microsoft system component.
Afterward, run DISM and SFC. If the detection returns, leave the file quarantined and investigate malware or a damaged Windows installation rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 5: Check application architecture
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not always load the same binaries. Windows also maintains separate locations for some 32-bit components.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer or Windows release to solve an architecture mismatch. Check the affected application’s documentation or installer requirements to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, then repair the originating Windows component or reinstall the application using its official installer.
A message saying that mfvdsp.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A corrupted system file.
- A damaged dependent module.
- An incompatible binary.
- A failed application installation.
- A file copied from a different Windows release.
It is not normally evidence that the file needs manual registration.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when video hardware is also failing
A graphics or camera driver is not the usual source of a missing Windows Media Foundation DLL. However, update drivers if the same incident includes black video, camera failures, crashes in several media applications, or Device Manager warnings.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant camera, audio, or capture devices.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove a working driver solely because mfvdsp.dll is missing. Driver replacement does not restore a deleted Windows component.
Manually identifying the correct driver across several hardware vendors can involve checking device IDs, Windows builds, and compatibility. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through its full version is optional, and Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer remains suitable. This is not a substitute for repairing Media Foundation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 7: Remove a leftover startup reference
If the message appears during every startup but no current application uses video processing, the original program may have been uninstalled while leaving a startup task behind.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the removed program.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the original program and its official uninstaller. Do not delete random registry entries or disable unknown Windows services. If you cannot identify the startup item, perform a clean-boot investigation or use System Restore to return Windows to a state before the failed uninstall.

What not to do
Do not download mfvdsp.dll from a random DLL website
A manually downloaded file can contain malware, come from the wrong Windows release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can also create a version mismatch.
Use Windows servicing, the official Media Feature Pack, System Restore, a matching Windows repair source, or the affected application’s official installer.
Do not run regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft’s Frame Rate Converter documentation does not instruct users to register mfvdsp.dll, so this command is not a standard repair:
regsvr32 mfvdsp.dll
Registration errors do not restore a missing Media Foundation component.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET do not normally supply this Windows Media Foundation file. Install those runtimes only when the application separately reports a dependency on them.
When to use System Restore or Windows repair
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, update, cleanup tool, or software installation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
On supported Windows 11 systems, you can also use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
If corruption keeps returning, inspect disk health, review servicing errors, run a malware investigation, and consider a repair reinstall rather than repeatedly replacing DLL files.

FAQ
Is mfvdsp.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows Media Foundation component. A copy found in an unusual folder, flagged by security software, or showing an invalid Microsoft signature deserves investigation. Do not assume every detection is false.
Where should mfvdsp.dll be?
Microsoft documents the normal component path as:
%windir%System32mfvdsp.dll
The correct file version varies by Windows build and architecture.
Does Windows N omit it?
Windows N omits related media technologies, so the Media Feature Pack is a likely fix when the PC actually runs an N or KN edition. It is not a universal remedy for standard Windows editions.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for mfvdsp.dll alone. Those packages do not normally provide this Windows Media Foundation file.
What if only one game reports the error?
Verify or repair the game files, then reinstall it from the official launcher if necessary. If other applications work, an application repair is more likely than a system-wide replacement.
Does mfvdsp.dll need regsvr32?
Normally no. Repair Windows Media Foundation or the affected application instead.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, use a matching installation source, System Restore, or a Windows repair reinstall. Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into a system folder.
