lxaa2_serv.dll is associated with Lexmark printer and scanner software, not with ordinary Windows. If Windows says the file is missing, it usually means a Lexmark driver package is incomplete, damaged, removed, or still being called by an orphaned startup entry.
The safest repair is to identify the Lexmark device and reinstall its complete driver or software package. Do not download an isolated DLL and copy it into System32.
What lxaa2_serv.dll belongs to
Public file records identify lxaa2_serv.dll with Lexmark Communication System and Lexmark International, Inc. The records describe 32-bit builds with version 1.0.0.0, including files of approximately 0.63 MB and 0.66 MB.
That does not establish one exact printer model. The file has been associated with Lexmark printer and scanner driver files, but no authoritative Lexmark page identified during research names a current package that specifically contains lxaa2_serv.dll.

It is not established as:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET file
- A game component
If a game displays this error, check whether a Lexmark utility or driver was installed on the computer. A game normally has no reason to depend on this DLL.
Errors caused by lxaa2_serv.dll
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because lxaa2_serv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lxaa2_serv.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting lxaa2_serv.dll.”
- “Error loading lxaa2_serv.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “lxaa2_serv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording matters:
- Missing or not found: Windows cannot locate the DLL where the calling Lexmark program expects it.
- Specified module could not be found: the named DLL may be missing, but a dependency of that DLL may also be absent.
- Not designed to run on Windows: suspect corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged installation.
- Error at startup with no printer activity: an old Lexmark startup item, service, or scheduled task may still be calling the removed software.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Lexmark package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the primary fix because the DLL is part of a coordinated printer or scanner installation. The installer places related files together, registers the required components, and uses the correct configuration for the device.
Identify the Lexmark model
Check the label on the printer or multifunction device. You can also look in Windows:
- Press
Win+I. - Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Lexmark device name.
- Select it and note the model.
For older devices, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Record any Lexmark entries and warning icons.
If more than one Lexmark printer has been installed, match the package to the device that produced the error. Do not copy a DLL from one model’s installation into another model’s directory.

Open the official Lexmark Support site manually and search for the exact model. Use Drivers & Downloads, then choose the Windows version and architecture shown for your system.
To check the architecture:
- Press
Win+I. - Open System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
The public records for lxaa2_serv.dll identify 32-bit builds. A 32-bit Lexmark program can run under 64-bit Windows, so 64-bit Windows does not automatically mean that every DLL must be 64-bit. Choose the architecture required by the Lexmark package, not the architecture you assume the DLL should have.
Reinstall it
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the Lexmark installer requests this.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark software.
- Remove the damaged or obsolete Lexmark package only if the installer or Lexmark instructions call for it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the downloaded Lexmark installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the printer when prompted.
- Re-add the printer under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Print a test page and open the scan utility if the device supports scanning.
Success means the original Lexmark utility opens, printing or scanning works, and the startup error no longer appears after another restart.

If the installer cannot detect the printer, try a different USB port, remove the old device from Printers & scanners, and restart before running the installer again. Network printers may require the printer’s network address or discovery option in the Lexmark setup program.

Fix 2: Check whether Defender quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Microsoft Defender may remove an old or suspicious driver component. Check its history before reinstalling the same software repeatedly.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open entries related to the Lexmark installation.
- Record the detection name and original file path.
Only restore or allow the file when all of the following are true:
- It came from a trusted Lexmark installer.
- The original path belongs to the Lexmark installation.
- The detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
- You are reinstalling from the official Lexmark source.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the computer. If the detection name suggests malware, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the Lexmark software instead.

Fix 3: Remove an orphaned Lexmark startup item
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the error appears immediately after signing in but printing still works, Windows may be launching a leftover Lexmark utility.
First identify the caller:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Lexmark entries.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable name and path.
Also check:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
services.msc. - Look for clearly identified Lexmark services.
- Open the service properties and record its executable information if available.
Do not delete a startup entry merely because its name contains a DLL. Confirm that it belongs to the removed Lexmark software. If the printer is no longer used, disable the orphaned startup item or uninstall the associated Lexmark program through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.

Restart Windows. If the error disappears and you do not need the old printer software, the orphaned entry was probably the caller. If you still use the printer, reinstall the correct package instead of permanently disabling its utilities.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components as a secondary check
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
lxaa2_serv.dll appears to be a third-party Lexmark file, so Windows repair commands may not restore it. They are useful when servicing corruption prevents a driver package from installing correctly.
Install pending updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart.
Then repair the Windows component store:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. Restart after both commands and test the Lexmark program again.
If SFC reports repaired files, repeat the test. If it reports that it could not fix some files, review the result and return to the Lexmark package repair rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Fix 5: Check the driver in Device Manager
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Use Device Manager to find installation problems, not to search randomly for a replacement DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Lexmark device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error code.
- Check the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update driver only if you have a trusted package or Windows Update source.
- If the device is broken after a recent update, review Roll Back Driver.
- Restart after making a change.
If you choose Uninstall device, select the option to remove the driver package only when you intend to reinstall it immediately. Removing a device without reinstalling the correct model package can leave printing or scanning unavailable.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for missing files.

Do not assume this will repair the Lexmark installation:

It may return “DllRegisterServer was not found,” or it may register the wrong copy and create a second problem. No authoritative source identified during research says that lxaa2_serv.dll requires manual registration.
Use regsvr32 only if Lexmark’s instructions for the exact package explicitly require it. Otherwise, reinstall the complete driver.
Fix 7: Avoid DLL download and manual-copy fixes
Time needed: 5 minutes to avoid the wrong repair
Do not download lxaa2_serv.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An arbitrary application folder
A copied file can have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, signature, or installation path. It may also be malicious. Even a genuine DLL may not work because the missing item is a dependency or because the Lexmark installation has other damaged files.

A 32-bit DLL also does not belong automatically in SysWOW64, and a 64-bit Windows installation does not prove that a 64-bit copy is correct. The Lexmark installer knows the path expected by its executable.
Fix 8: Use Windows Features only when a component is actually missing
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Do not enable random legacy Windows features to repair this file. There is no evidence connecting lxaa2_serv.dll with .NET, DirectX, or a Visual C++ runtime.
If a Lexmark scanner specifically reports a Windows imaging component problem:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
optionalfeatures. - Review enabled Windows features.
- Change a feature only when the Lexmark documentation or the exact error identifies it.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
For scanner failures, also check the Windows Image Acquisition service:

- Confirm it is not disabled.
- Start or restart it if appropriate.
This does not replace reinstalling the Lexmark package.
Fix 9: Try System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver update, cleanup, or software installation.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select a restore point from before the change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, registry state, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. It cannot be relied on to recover this DLL, and restore points may not exist.
What is probably causing the error

If the file exists but still will not load
Check the file’s full path and properties:
- Right-click the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
- Note the location, version, and signer.
- Compare the location with the Lexmark program that reports the error.
A file in a user-writable folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application directory deserves caution. A file in the expected Lexmark driver directory can still fail if one of its dependent DLLs is missing.
If the message says “specified module could not be found” while the file is present, treat it as a dependency or installation problem first. Do not move the file to System32.
What to collect before asking for support
Record:
- The exact error text
- The executable named in the error
- The full path shown for
lxaa2_serv.dll - The Lexmark printer or scanner model
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- The Lexmark installer name and package version
- Device Manager error codes
- The Defender detection name, if any
- Whether the error appears at startup, printing, scanning, or when opening a Lexmark utility
With that information, Lexmark support or the device manufacturer can determine whether the old model still has a compatible package. If reinstalling the official package fails, do not substitute a DLL from another printer model or an unverified download.
