“wlidcredprov.dll” errors: start with the full message
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wlidcredprov.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading wlidcredprov.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “wlidcredprov.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Bad Image” or “Invalid Image,” sometimes naming
LogonUI.exe.

The exact path matters more than the filename. wlidcredprov.dll is a Microsoft Account Credential Provider, historically called the Microsoft Windows Live ID Credential Provider. Windows uses credential providers through Winlogon and Logon UI to collect and process sign-in credentials, so an error can appear during startup, shutdown, sign-in, or a credential prompt.
The 60-second answer
First, record the complete path shown in the error.
- If it is under
%windir%System32or%windir%SysWOW64, repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. - If it is under
Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWindows Live, repair or remove the old Windows Live component that installed it. - If antivirus removed it, review Protection History and then repair the owning installation.
- If the file is inside a specific application folder, repair that application using its official installer.
Do not download wlidcredprov.dll from a random DLL site, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 as a generic fix.
What is wlidcredprov.dll?
This DLL is a credential-provider COM component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game library, or hardware driver. Its job is connected to Windows authentication UI rather than ordinary application features.

Microsoft documentation explains the role of credential providers in Windows authentication (Microsoft credential providers).
On supported Windows installations, the native system copy is normally found at:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may also be present at:
%windir%SysWOW64
This naming is counterintuitive: System32 is used for native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector guidance.

That path points to legacy Windows Live software, not necessarily to the current Windows system copy. A Microsoft Q&A report records a LogonUI.exe - Bad Image error involving this exact Windows Live location.
Trace the file before repairing anything
1. Record the process and path
Write down:
- The complete file path
- The process named in the dialog, such as
LogonUI.exe - Whether the error appears at startup, shutdown, sign-in, or only inside one application
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after an update, crash, cleanup, antivirus action, or Windows Live uninstall
“Could not find the specified module” does not always mean that wlidcredprov.dll itself is missing. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing or damaged.
2. Check whether the file exists
Press Win+E, click the address bar, and enter the path from the error. If the file is present, right-click it, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature, and click Details.

A genuine system copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. An unexpected location, invalid signature, or file that repeatedly returns after removal deserves a security investigation.
3. Check Windows architecture
Press Win+I, select System, choose About, and read System type. Do not substitute a 32-bit file for a 64-bit file or copy files between Windows builds. Windows servicing is safer because it selects the correct architecture and dependencies.
Fix 1: install Windows updates, then restart
Use Windows’ own servicing path first when the error names System32 or SysWOW64.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Click Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the action that originally produced the error. If it was a sign-in or startup message, restart again and check whether the dialog has disappeared.
Microsoft’s current update instructions are available in Install Windows updates.
Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this branch when the system copy is missing, corrupted, or reports a bad image.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain on one percentage for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
The SFC result tells you what happened:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair changed files. Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means continue with Microsoft’s advanced repair-source instructions rather than downloading the DLL.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source:

The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. See Microsoft’s advanced system-file repair guidance.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate fix when the component itself is damaged.
Fix 3: repair or remove legacy Windows Live
Use this branch when the path contains:
Microsoft SharedWindows Live
This is especially relevant when LogonUI.exe displays the error during startup or shutdown on an older Windows installation.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, look for Windows Live Essentials or another Windows Live component.
- Select it.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair if that option is offered.
- Restart and test sign-in and shutdown.
If the legacy software is no longer needed, uninstall it instead. Removing the owning component is preferable to leaving a broken credential-provider registration behind.
Windows Essentials 2012 is retired and Microsoft no longer provides it as a current standalone download. Use Windows’ installed repair or uninstall options, not an unofficial replacement installer. Microsoft explains the product’s status in Support for Windows Essentials apps.
If the entry is absent but the Windows Live path remains, do not delete random files from the folder while Windows is running. First create a restore point if possible, then use Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10 to check for related entries. A Microsoft account or sign-in component may also be part of another legacy installation.
Fix 4: check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed or isolated the DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand the detection associated with
wlidcredprov.dll. - Inspect the file path, detection name, and publisher details.
Restore the file only if the path is expected and the file is confirmed as Microsoft-signed. If the path is unusual or the signature is invalid, leave it quarantined.

Microsoft describes these options in Protection History.
If the file keeps being replaced, appears outside a legitimate Windows or application directory, or has an invalid signature, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. For a persistent concern, use Microsoft Defender Offline through Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Microsoft’s scan guidance is available in Windows Security virus and threat protection.
Fix 5: repair the application that reports the error
If the complete path points inside a particular program’s folder, that program owns the copy.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Click Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Some desktop programs provide their own Repair, Verify files, or reinstall function. Use that before copying a DLL from another computer.
A file inside an application directory does not prove that the application is a game or that a graphics driver owns it. No evidence ties wlidcredprov.dll to a particular current game runtime.
Fix 6: treat drivers as a secondary possibility
There is no evidence that a display, chipset, or audio driver normally installs this credential-provider DLL. Do not begin by reinstalling every driver.
If the failure began immediately after a system update and Device Manager shows a related warning:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. If the error prevents normal startup:
- Start the computer and allow Windows Recovery Environment to appear after failed boot attempts, or start from approved Windows recovery media.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
From a working desktop, press Win+R, type:
rstrui.exe
Press Enter, then select a suitable restore point.
Microsoft documents this process in System Restore. If System Restore is unavailable and DISM, SFC, and application repair fail, use a matching Windows installation source for an in-place repair. Resetting or clean-installing Windows is a last resort and requires backups. Microsoft outlines the choices in Recovery options in Windows.

Do not use these “fixes”
- Do not download
wlidcredprov.dllfrom a generic DLL repository. - Do not place a system credential-provider DLL in a game or application folder.
- Do not mix x86 and x64 files.
- Do not copy a file from another Windows build.
- Do not run
regsvr32as a standard repair step.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the required registration entry point. Microsoft documents the tool in its regsvr32 command reference. A credential-provider DLL is repaired through Windows servicing or the installation that owns it, not by blindly registering it.
FAQ
Is wlidcredprov.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft DLL when it is in an expected Windows or legacy Windows Live location and carries a valid Microsoft signature. Verify the path and signature instead of judging the file by name alone.

Is it a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?
Do not assume every installation contains the same file. Its presence depends on the Windows build and installed components. Windows update and system repair are the authoritative ways to restore the correct build-specific copy.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Usually not. wlidcredprov.dll is a credential-provider component, not a documented Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable file.
Why does “module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The message can indicate a missing dependency or an incompatible component. Repair the owning Windows or application installation instead of replacing the visible DLL alone.
Can I delete it?
Not from System32 or SysWOW64. If it belongs to obsolete Windows Live software, uninstall that software through Programs and Features so its registrations are removed properly.
