neroapiengine.dll is a Nero application component, not a Windows system file. When Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Nero program that installed it instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What neroapiengine.dll is
Public file records describe neroapiengine.dll as Nero Library, associated with Nero AG and Nero Burning ROM and related Nero software. Those records identify the file as a 32-bit application library, but they do not establish that every Nero product or version installs it.
The filename alone cannot tell you whether the affected program is Nero Burning ROM, Nero Platinum, Nero Video, Nero Recode, MediaHome, or another application that bundled a Nero component. Read the program name in the error window before repairing anything.

These are catalogue listings, not proof that every build remains supported or that a file downloaded from a third-party source is authentic. Do not choose the newest-looking DLL simply because its name matches. A 32-bit Nero application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit version of its own files and dependencies.

What the error actually means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because neroapiengine.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting neroapiengine.dll.”
- “Error loading neroapiengine.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because neroapiengine.dll was not found.”
- “neroapiengine.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the Nero library.
Before changing anything, note:
- The exact Nero product named in the error.
- The complete error wording and any status code.
- Whether the problem began after an uninstall, update, disk cleanup, antivirus action, or failed reinstall.
- Whether the program is installed under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - Whether another Nero application starts normally.
That information prevents you from repairing the wrong installation.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Nero product
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged neroapiengine.dll.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the exact Nero product shown by the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the Nero setup wizard and choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Nero program again.
If the repair completes successfully, the program should open without the DLL message. If the error remains, continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying a replacement file.
Fix 2: Reinstall Nero from the official installer
Use Nero’s official Download Center or the original installer supplied with your purchase. Nero provides both online and offline installer packages, and the package must match the product you actually use.
- Save your Nero product key, account details, projects, and any personal files used by the application.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected Nero product.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Nero installer.
- If Windows displays a permission prompt, select Yes.
- Install the same Nero product and, where possible, the same generation that was previously installed.
- Restart again.
- Test the application from its normal Start menu shortcut.
If the installer offers both online and offline packages, try the offline installer when the online setup repeatedly fails. Close Nero processes before starting setup. If necessary, open Task Manager, select any Nero process, choose End task, and restart the installer as administrator.
A successful reinstall places the library inside the Nero installation rather than in a shared Windows folder. If the error identifies another parent application, reinstall that application instead. Installing Nero by guesswork will not repair a Nero component bundled inside a different program.

Fix 3: Remove leftover Nero traces with FirstAidKit
A failed upgrade can leave files or registry entries from several Nero generations. In that situation, a normal uninstall may not be enough. Nero’s official FirstAidKit is intended to remove traces of previous Nero programs before a fresh installation.

- Close all Nero programs.
- Restart Windows.
- Download FirstAidKit from Nero’s official support site.
- Run the tool as administrator.
- Follow its removal instructions.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Install the required Nero product again from Nero’s official installer.
- Restart and test the program.
FirstAidKit removes Nero-related files and registry entries. It is a cleanup step, not a way to obtain neroapiengine.dll by itself. If the clean reinstall still fails, record the installer error and contact Nero support with the exact product and Windows version.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or isolate an application file. Do not immediately disable protection or restore the file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning the Nero installation or
neroapiengine.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its location, detection name, and source.
- Restore or allow the file only if the Nero installation came from an official, verifiable source and your security product confirms the detection is safe to reverse.
- If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined.
- Reinstall Nero from its official installer instead.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, verify the installer’s source, digital signature, and hash before considering any exception. A random DLL download is not a safe replacement for a quarantined application file.

Fix 5: Install a missing dependency only when the error identifies it
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just because neroapiengine.dll is missing. This filename belongs to Nero, not to Microsoft.
A runtime may be relevant if the full error or a dependency check names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or an older MSVCR file.

For Visual C++:
- Identify whether the affected Nero program is 32-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- For a 32-bit Nero program, install the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
- Run the installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
Install only the runtime identified by the error or installer. Adding unrelated runtime packages rarely repairs a missing Nero library.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
DISM and SFC repair Windows component problems. They do not replace a missing Nero-owned DLL, so use them when several applications show DLL errors or Windows itself appears damaged.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Nero repair or reinstall.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real fault is an incomplete Nero installation. Reinstalling the Nero product remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Nero.
Fix 7: Update drivers only if Nero reports a hardware-related failure
A graphics, optical-drive, audio, or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing neroapiengine.dll. Consider drivers only if Nero starts but crashes while accessing hardware, or its installer identifies a device problem.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as DVD/CD-ROM drives, Display adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Nero again.
Do not remove a working driver merely because the DLL error appears. A driver update does not replace the need to repair Nero when its installation is incomplete.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If Nero worked until a recent installation or update and a restore point exists, System Restore may reverse the change without affecting personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
- Let Windows restart.
- Test Nero.
If the error began after removing another Nero product, reinstalling the affected product is usually more direct than restoring all of Windows.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
neroapiengine.dll is not a normal Windows system DLL. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and still leave the Nero installation broken.

Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL sites may provide the wrong Nero generation, wrong architecture, a modified binary, or a file carrying malware. Even a genuine file may not fix a missing dependency, damaged installer, or mismatched application. Use Nero’s official installer or original installation media.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that support registration behavior such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable public evidence that neroapiengine.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library.
Registering it is therefore not an appropriate general repair. If you try a command such as:
regsvr32 neroapiengine.dll
you may receive an error because the library does not implement the required registration entry point. Reinstall the complete Nero product instead.
Do not install every runtime package
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not interchangeable cures for an application-owned DLL. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error or Nero setup identifies that specific dependency.

If Nero still will not start
Check the exact product named by the shortcut and error window. Confirm that you repaired the same installation, especially if both 32-bit and 64-bit applications are present. Then try Nero FirstAidKit, reinstall from the official offline installer, and restart before testing again.
If another application reports the same filename, identify whether it bundled a Nero component. Repair that parent application rather than installing a separate Nero package. If only one Windows user account is affected, test the program from another local profile to distinguish an installation fault from a profile-specific configuration or permissions issue.
