If Windows says the file is missing or “the specified module could not be found,” repair the Canon package first, then investigate security software, dependencies, and Windows component damage.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata describes cnbbr316.dll as part of the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver and identifies Canon Inc. as the publisher. That makes it a hardware-driver file, not a general Windows component such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
No authoritative Canon documentation establishes a universal version, file size, hash, installation path, or list of printer models that use this exact DLL. Public listings also disagree about architecture and sometimes incorrectly classify the file as a Microsoft Windows component. Do not use those listings to choose a replacement file.
The correct package depends on:
- Your exact Canon printer model
- Your Windows edition and release
- Whether Canon supplies a 32-bit or 64-bit package for that model

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution because cnbbr316.dll is associated with the Canon print-driver package.
1. Identify the printer and the failing program
Write down the exact printer model shown on the device label or in Windows. Also note where the error appears:
- When printing from an application
- When opening Canon printing or scanning software
- During sign-in or Windows startup
- When a particular application launches
If several Canon printers are installed, do not remove every printer immediately. Identify the affected model first.
2. Remove the affected printer
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Select Remove device.
If the Canon installer instructs you to disconnect the USB cable, turn off the printer, or leave it disconnected during setup, follow that instruction.

3. Download the complete package
Use Canon’s official support and download page, then select:
- The exact printer model
- Your Windows version
- The offered system architecture
- The complete printer driver or Canon software package
Do not select a package for a similar model. A nearby model can use different driver files and utilities.
4. Install and restart
Run the downloaded Canon installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission. Allow it to install the printer driver and related components. Reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
Restart Windows after installation, then add the printer again from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. Print a test page and open the Canon utility that previously displayed the error.

Success means the error no longer appears and the printer or Canon utility works normally. If the same message returns, uninstall the Canon software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart, and run the model-specific installer again. Do not delete random DLL files from Windows folders.
When several driver packages are installed and you are unsure which one is stale, manually checking each package can be time-consuming. Fix 2: Check Windows Update and Device Manager
Windows Update may restore a basic Canon-compatible driver, but it may not restore Canon’s proprietary utilities or every component required by an older package.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates.
- Install a Canon-related printer driver if one is offered.
- Restart Windows.
Test printing after the restart. If Windows installs a basic class driver but the Canon utility still reports cnbbr316.dll, return to the complete Canon package rather than repeatedly running Windows Update.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer is listed.
- Right-click the affected Canon device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If that does not help:
- Right-click the Canon device again.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only for the affected package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from Canon’s official model support page.
Do not remove shared Canon drivers used by other working printers unless you have confirmed that they belong to the affected installation.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a DLL after a detection, leaving the Canon driver incomplete.
In Windows Security:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the Canon driver or the affected installation directory.
Do not restore a file simply because its name is cnbbr316.dll. Restore it only when the original location, digital signature, and Canon installation source are trustworthy. If any detail is uncertain, remove or leave the detection quarantined and reinstall the complete driver from Canon instead.
After reinstalling, run Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. A replacement DLL from an unknown source can be malicious even when its filename looks correct.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbbr316.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load the file because another library or driver dependency is missing.

Use these checks:
- Open File Explorer and search for
cnbbr316.dllonly to determine whether a copy exists. - Note whether the error appears from a Canon utility, the printer queue, or Windows startup.
- Do not copy the file into
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. - Reinstall the complete Canon package so Windows receives the DLL and its related dependencies together.
If the file exists in an old DriverStore or Canon folder but the error continues, that is evidence against a simple missing-file problem. The package may be incomplete, the dependency may be missing, or the installed architecture may be incompatible.
Fix 5: Resolve a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch
Do not assume that the 64-bit version of a DLL is correct simply because Windows is 64-bit. Older printers may use 32-bit software, while newer packages may provide separate components.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Then return to Canon’s support page and select the package explicitly offered for your printer and Windows installation. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit package, or the reverse.

If Canon does not provide a driver for your Windows release, check whether Canon documents support for an older driver or compatibility mode. If no supported package exists, the printer may not be compatible with the current Windows version.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when Windows itself appears damaged, or when multiple unrelated system errors occur. They are secondary checks for this problem because cnbbr316.dll belongs to a third-party Canon driver package. SFC and DISM may not restore a missing Canon file.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files.

Manually repeating repair commands without knowing whether Windows or the Canon package changed can make troubleshooting slow. Use System Restore if the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, or utility update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It is unavailable when System Protection was disabled or no restore point exists.

After the rollback, prevent the issue from returning by installing only the driver package intended for the exact Canon model and Windows version.
Do not download or register the DLL manually
Avoid DLL download sites and file-sharing pages. An isolated file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be an incompatible version, or omit the dependency that caused the error. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can also create version conflicts.
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver component is not automatically a self-registering DLL, so running:
regsvr32 cnbbr316.dll
may produce a registration error and will not reinstall the Canon driver. Use the Canon installer instead.
Windows Features are also not a likely fix here. Enabling .NET, DirectPlay, or another optional feature is not supported by evidence for this Canon driver component.
If the error appears at Windows startup
If the printer has already been removed but the message appears every time Windows starts:

- Open Settings → Apps → Startup.
- Disable unused Canon launchers temporarily.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Canon utilities that belong to the removed printer.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message remains, inspect Task Scheduler for leftover Canon tasks and remove only entries you can identify confidently.
Do not repeatedly replace the DLL. A startup reference to a removed Canon utility is more likely than a new Windows system-file problem.
