One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchlltdres.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows resource DLL for Link-Layer Topology Discovery, not a Visual C++ or game runtime. If it is missing or damaged, repair Windows’ protected files first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
LLTD helps Windows discover devices, map network topology, and support related network-health and quality-of-service functions. Windows networking components such as the LLTD mapper and responder use resources associated with lltdres.dll.
On a normal supported Windows installation, the expected path is:
C:WindowsSystem32lltdres.dll
The exact architecture and build depend on the Windows installation. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit components may use the Windows compatibility paths. Do not choose a replacement based on a file-index website’s version or size listing.

Microsoft describes LLTD in its LLTD protocol overview and Windows Rally technologies documentation.
A missing lltdres.dll does not automatically explain loss of internet access. LLTD is primarily concerned with discovery and topology, while ordinary network connectivity depends on several other Windows components and drivers.
Causes grouped by symptom
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Windows or several programs report the file missing | Deleted or corrupted protected Windows file | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The problem began after an update or interrupted upgrade | Component-store or servicing damage | Run DISM and retry Windows Update |
| The file disappeared after security software acted | Quarantine or security cleanup | Check protection history, then repair Windows |
| Only one old program reports the error | Broken application or incorrect dependency | Repair or reinstall that program |
| A copy exists in a temporary or user folder | Possible counterfeit or malware | Do not run it; scan the computer |
| Network discovery stopped after adapter changes | Network component or driver problem | Check Windows repair and the adapter |
| The computer is running Windows XP | Historical LLTD responder may be absent | See the XP section below |
The wording may vary, including:
- “The program can’t start because lltdres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lltdres.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting lltdres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading lltdres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “lltdres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “A required component is missing: lltdres.dll.”
These are observed Windows error messages, not an official Microsoft catalogue proving one specific cause. The important distinction is whether the error appears across Windows or only when one application starts.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When it completes, leave the elevated window open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Microsoft documents this process in Repair a Windows image.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logand use a matching Windows installation source. - Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: run the scan again after restarting, or perform it from Windows Recovery Environment.
Microsoft explains SFC’s role in its System File Checker documentation.
If repeating DISM and SFC leaves you hunting through logs and guessing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
Restart after a successful repair. Then test the original program or network-discovery function before making further changes.
Fix 2: Check the file location and digital signature
Do not assume that every file named lltdres.dll is genuine.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
lltdres.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Review the signer and confirm that the file is in the Windows directory, not in a user profile, temporary folder, browser folder, download directory, or an unrelated application folder.
The normal Windows location is evidence, not an absolute guarantee. A malicious file can be placed in a legitimate-looking directory, so treat an invalid or absent signature cautiously.
If a file named lltdres.dll exists only in an unexpected folder, do not copy it into System32. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan instead:

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one old program reports lltdres.dll, the program may be incorrectly requesting a Windows component or may have its own damaged installation.
First identify the executable named in the error. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair. If that does not work, select Reset only if you understand that the application’s local data may be removed.
For a traditional desktop program, use its own installer or Apps and Features entry to choose Repair, if offered. Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-integrity command. Do not place a downloaded lltdres.dll beside the game executable unless the software publisher explicitly documents that exact requirement.
If the application is old, run its installer as administrator and check whether compatibility settings are needed. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application alone is broken.
Fix 4: Check Windows Update and recent system changes
An interrupted update, failed repair, cleanup utility, debloating change, or malware-removal operation can leave protected files inconsistent.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again after the restart.
If the problem began immediately after a known change, System Restore may help:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
System Restore is not a substitute for DISM and SFC, but it can reverse a recent software or update change.
Fix 5: Check the network adapter and LLTD components
A driver reinstall is not the first remedy for a missing resource DLL, but it is reasonable when the error began after network-adapter changes or when network discovery components are also malfunctioning.
Check the adapter in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and status.
- Select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the issue started immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. Use the adapter manufacturer’s official support channel for a matching driver rather than a generic driver-download site.
When several machines show the same adapter issue and manually checking each driver is becoming repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional.
Do not randomly enable or remove Windows Features to replace lltdres.dll. LLTD is integrated into supported Windows networking, and a missing protected file is normally repaired through DISM and SFC.
Why you should not download and copy the DLL
Random DLL download sites sites create several risks:
Best Value
- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
- The file may contain malware or be tampered with.
- It may have the wrong Windows build or architecture.
- It may be unsigned or have an invalid signature.
- Copying it may hide component-store corruption.
- A 32-bit file can be placed where a 64-bit Windows component is expected, or the reverse.
- The original error may be caused by a missing dependency, not the named file.
A “latest” version from a file-index page is not a valid selection rule for a protected Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Recovery Environment, System Restore, or the official installer for the affected application.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
lltdres.dll is a resource DLL associated with LLTD components, not a DLL that should normally be registered manually. Running:
regsvr32 lltdres.dll
can produce an entry-point error and does not restore a damaged Windows component. Microsoft documents the command’s intended scope in its regsvr32 reference.
If Windows will not boot
Enter Windows Recovery Environment:
- Start the computer and interrupt startup when necessary until recovery appears, or use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Identify the Windows drive letter. In recovery it may not be
C:. - Substitute the correct drive letter in these commands:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows
Microsoft provides the offline procedure in its WinRE startup troubleshooting guidance.
Windows XP exception
Windows XP handled LLTD differently. Microsoft provided the historical Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder, associated with KB922120, as a separate package for certain XP networking scenarios.
Recommended Free Tools
That package is not a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime. If you are maintaining a legacy XP computer, match the service pack and language and use only an authentic Microsoft source. For current supported Windows installations, upgrade rather than relying on obsolete XP downloads. Microsoft’s historical guidance is discussed in this Microsoft Q&A entry.
When all repairs fail
Escalate in this order:
- Confirm the exact executable named by the error.
- Check whether the message appears system-wide or only in one application.
- Inspect the file path and digital signature.
- Review antivirus quarantine and Protection history.
- Run full malware and storage-health checks.
- Review Event Viewer and
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. - Test with a clean boot or a new Windows user profile.
- Use a matching installation source for DISM.
- Consider System Restore, a Windows repair install, or Reset only after backing up important data.
The correct repair is usually to restore Windows’ own protected component or repair the one application requesting it, not to replace lltdres.dll with an unverified download.
