Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appeared after an update, crash, mod change, or interrupted installation: verify the game files.
- Windows Security detected or removed the file: inspect Protection history, then verify or reinstall the game.
- The file exists beside the game executable but will not load: repair the game and check its prerequisites.
- The message mentions
VCRUNTIME140.dll,MSVCP140.dll, DirectX, or another module: repair that dependency separately. - Several games or applications fail: investigate Windows, storage, antivirus, or graphics-driver problems.
- You found a download offering this DLL: do not use it. Restore the file through the game’s official launcher.
What gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll is
This is a 64-bit Windows runtime library from NVIDIA GameWorks Turf Effects, a graphics technology used to render and simulate interactive grass. NVIDIA describes Turf Effects as a legacy PC SDK associated with DirectX 11.
The file is third-party game middleware. It is not:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ component
- A normal NVIDIA display-driver file
- A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32 - A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The clearest publicly verifiable game association is Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. Its Windows installation includes GFSDK_TurfEffects.win64.dll beside the game executable. That does not prove it is shipped with every game using NVIDIA technology, so identify the affected game before attempting a repair.

The win64 part indicates a 64-bit Windows build. A 32-bit DLL with a similar name is not an interchangeable substitute.
Error messages you may see
Windows can display slightly different wording depending on the version and the point at which loading fails:
- “The program can’t start because gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll.”
- “gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. The file may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
Fix 1: Verify the game files
This is the safest and most likely repair. The launcher compares the installation with its manifest and downloads the correct file for that game edition.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Steam may report that some files were reacquired. That is expected. Restart Steam before testing again if the game still reports the same error.
Ubisoft Connect
- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Choose the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Verify files or Verify files under the local-files section.
- Allow Ubisoft Connect to download replacements.
- Launch the game from Ubisoft Connect.
The wording can vary between Ubisoft Connect releases. Look for the file-verification command in the game’s properties rather than searching Windows for the DLL.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Click the three dots beside its name.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait until verification completes, then launch the game.
Other launchers
Open the game’s page or properties and look for Verify, Repair, Scan, or Check files. Use the launcher that originally installed the game. Do not use a copy of the DLL from another release, another game, or another computer.

If verification finds no problem but the error continues, close the launcher completely, restart Windows, and run verification again. Also check whether a mod manager or security product is removing the file immediately after it is restored.

Fix 2: Reinstall the affected game
Reinstall when verification cannot restore the file, repeatedly reports corruption, or the installation is from an incomplete backup.
- Back up saved games if they are not synchronized through the launcher.
- Remove mods and custom files from the game directory.
- Uninstall the game through its launcher or through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the game from Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Launcher, or the publisher’s official installer.
- Launch it once before reinstalling mods or overlays.
Leave enough free storage for both the download and temporary installation files. If the DLL disappears again immediately after a clean installation, continue with the antivirus and storage checks below instead of repeating the reinstall indefinitely.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a legitimate game file after an update or scan. Do not disable protection blindly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Open a detection that refers to the game installation.
- Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the game came from a trusted official source and the path is inside that game’s installation directory.
- Run the launcher’s file verification after restoring it.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the detection is unclear, leave the item quarantined and reinstall or verify the game through its official launcher. Do not download a replacement from a DLL website to bypass the detection.
If the file repeatedly disappears, check:
- Windows Security Protection history
- Third-party antivirus quarantine
- Controlled folder access
- The antivirus exclusion list
- Whether a mod manager is replacing the game directory
- Whether the game folder is on a failing or nearly full drive
Only add an exclusion after confirming the game’s origin and the exact installation path.
Fix 4: Repair missing dependencies
Microsoft Visual C++
Install or repair Visual C++ only when the game also reports files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.

- Open the Microsoft page.
- Download the package matching the application architecture, normally x64 for a 64-bit game.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or install it if it is absent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Installing Visual C++ will not recreate gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll. It repairs a different dependency.
DirectX and optional Windows components
Turf Effects is associated with DirectX 11, but the Turf Effects DLL is not the DirectX runtime. First use the game’s bundled prerequisites if the installation includes them.

If an older game specifically asks for a legacy Windows component:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Enable DirectPlay only if the game requires it.
- Click OK and restart Windows.
Do not enable unrelated features as a general DLL repair.
Fix 5: Check the file’s location and architecture
After verification, the file should normally be in the game’s installation directory, often beside the game executable. For Ghost Recon Wildlands, the related executable is GRW.exe.
To inspect it:
- Open the launcher’s game properties.
- Choose Browse local files, Open install location, or the equivalent command.
- Search that folder for
gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll. - Confirm that it is inside the game directory, not a Windows system directory.
- Start the game from its official launcher.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit game folder. Do not copy a DLL from another game or an old backup. Architecture or build mismatches can cause entry-point errors, “not designed to run on Windows” messages, or 0xc000007b.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not a normal way to restore a game-local NVIDIA DLL, but they are appropriate when several unrelated programs are failing or Windows itself appears damaged.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first, followed by SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart and run it again from an elevated Command Prompt. Persistent errors may point to disk corruption or a broader Windows installation problem.
Running these commands manually means waiting through scans and interpreting logs to determine what changed. A display-driver repair is not the normal response to one missing game DLL. Consider it when several DirectX games fail, the game crashes after loading, graphics initialization fails, or the problem began after a driver change.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties and review the Device status field.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver if an approved update is available.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean driver repair, download the driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the existing package only when necessary, restart, and install the correct Windows architecture package. Avoid changing drivers merely because this DLL is missing.

Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A game-rendering runtime is normally loaded directly by the game and does not need registry registration.
Running commands such as these will not repair the installation:

They may produce an entry-point or module error and distract from the real problem.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download this file from an arbitrary DLL catalog or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. The file may contain malware, belong to a different game build, use the wrong architecture, or omit a dependency. System-folder copying can also create version conflicts.

The safe sources are:
- The game’s official launcher verification process
- A clean reinstall from the official launcher
- A trusted original game backup
- Official Microsoft prerequisite packages when the error identifies a Microsoft dependency
If the error remains
Work through this final checklist:
- Identify which game launches the error.
- Remove mods and overlays temporarily.
- Verify the game files again.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Confirm the game is installed on a healthy drive with available space.
- Check Controlled Folder Access and third-party antivirus logs.
- Repair Visual C++ only if its files are also missing.
- Run DISM and SFC only if broader Windows problems exist.
- Reinstall the game if verification cannot restore the DLL.
- Investigate drivers only when multiple games or graphics initialization are affected.
If the game launches after verification but later crashes, the missing-file problem is resolved. Investigate mods, overlays, shader caches, graphics drivers, and game configuration as separate issues.
FAQ
Is gfsdk_turfeffects.win64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is NVIDIA GameWorks Turf Effects middleware supplied with software that uses it.
Should I put it in System32?
Normally, no. It should remain in the affected game’s installation directory.
Is Ghost Recon Wildlands the only game that uses it?
It is the clearest publicly verifiable example, but a complete authoritative list of every game using Turf Effects is not available. Identify the program that produced the error.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?

Check quarantine, mods, storage health, and dependencies. If the file exists but will not load, the error may involve a missing dependency or incompatible game build. A clean official reinstall is the next definitive test.
