“The program can’t start because ir50_qcxoriginal.dll is missing from your computer.”
Recommended Free Tools
ir50_qcxoriginal.dll is a 32-bit Intel Indeo Video 5.10 Quick Compressor codec file. If Windows says it is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest first move is usually to repair or reinstall the old game or application that requested it, not to download a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
- Only one old game or application fails: repair, verify, or reinstall that program first.
- The problem started after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history and inspect quarantine.
- The error appeared after an update or cleanup: try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Several programs show Windows file errors: repair the Windows component store with DISM, then run SFC.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows: check the file’s source, architecture, and dependencies rather than copying another DLL.
- The program is very old and still fails after repair: use compatibility settings or a supported older Windows environment.
What ir50_qcxoriginal.dll is
This file belongs to the legacy Intel Indeo video codec family. Its recorded file version is 5.0.64.48, it is 32-bit, and its reported size is approximately 0.18 MB. Public file metadata lists a typical 64-bit Windows location as:

The name can appear with _original, while public metadata records the original filename as ir50_qcx.dll. That does not establish one universal Windows installer or explain why every copy has the same naming pattern.
Indeo was used by older games and multimedia software for video compression and playback. Microsoft describes the technology as obsolete and disabled by default in Windows Vista and later, while retaining support pathways for some local legacy applications. You can read Microsoft’s background on Indeo and its security treatment and its historical Indeo security advisory.
#1 Best Overall
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, device driver, or modern Windows feature. Some Windows installations may contain an Indeo-related component, but the file may also have been supplied privately by the game or application that uses it.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that needs it
This is the most likely solution when one old game or application displays the error.
If the program has a repair option
- Press
Win + Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Windows offers Reset, use that only after Repair. Reset can remove application data or settings.
If repair is unavailable
- Locate the original installer, installation media, or the application’s official distribution.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from that trusted source.
- Apply the program’s own updates.
- Launch it once using Run as administrator by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.
For a game installed through a launcher, use its file repair feature instead of manually replacing the DLL:
- Open the launcher and select the game.
- Open its settings or manage menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to reacquire damaged or missing files.
- Start the game again.
A private codec copy may need to sit in the application’s own directory. You cannot safely determine that location from the filename alone, so do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old codec if it is damaged, modified, or considered unsafe.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with the affected program or DLL.
- Review the original file path, detection name, source, and available details.
- If the file came from the original installer or a trusted backup, verify that source before taking action.
- Restore or allow it only when you are confident it is legitimate.
Do not disable antivirus simply to make the error disappear. A legitimate filename does not prove that every copy found on disk is authentic. If the file appeared unexpectedly, run Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan.
After restoring a trusted file, repair or reinstall the application so its complete file set is restored. If Windows Security continues to remove it, leave it quarantined and investigate the installer or application instead.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the file appears to be part of Windows, multiple programs are failing, or Windows itself reports damaged system components. It will not necessarily restore a private copy that shipped with an old game.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses for protected-file repairs. Microsoft documents this process in its guide to repairing a Windows image.
Run SFC
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update from Settings → Windows Update.
If DISM cannot find the files it needs, connect to the internet and retry. Microsoft also documents using a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Repeating SFC will not fix a game’s private codec if Windows does not own that copy. Return to the application’s installer or launcher verification in that situation.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the specific game or application remains the definitive fix when that program supplied the DLL.
Fix 4: Use System Restore if the timing matches
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and a restore point predates the problem.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review likely changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally replace personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Check the 32-bit and 64-bit boundary
ir50_qcxoriginal.dll is a 32-bit file. A 32-bit game can use a 32-bit codec on 64-bit Windows through the Windows compatibility subsystem. On a typical 64-bit installation:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallC:WindowsSystem32contains 64-bit system binaries.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit system binaries.
The names are confusing, but copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 does not convert it into a 64-bit DLL. A 64-bit application cannot use this 32-bit file as a substitute.
To identify the requesting program:
- Note which shortcut or executable was open when the error appeared.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Open file location.
- Check the executable’s folder and installation source.
- If the error appears during startup, use the program’s repair or verification feature first.
- If the message names a path, compare that path with the application directory and Windows directories.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that ir50_qcxoriginal.dll exists but another dependency it needs is missing. That is why replacing only the named file often fails.
Do not routinely use regsvr32
Do not treat this command as a standard repair:
regsvr32 ir50_qcxoriginal.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Public export information for this codec identifies codec-related functions and DllMain, not a documented self-registration entry point. A missing codec dependency is not repaired by registering it.
Rank #4
If an old application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register a component, follow that documentation and use the correct 32-bit regsvr32 for the component. Otherwise, skip this command. Microsoft’s historical advice about deregistering Indeo components for security reasons is a separate operation, not a solution for a missing file.

Do not make these your first fix:
- Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- Media Feature Pack
- A third-party codec pack
- A random “DLL fixer”
There is no verified current Microsoft redistributable specifically identified as the source of this file. Third-party codec packs can create additional conflicts, and Microsoft warns about compatibility problems from codec packs in its codecs FAQ.
If the application’s official requirements explicitly name a runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft or the application developer. Otherwise, repair the application that requested the codec.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updating drivers is a secondary check
A graphics or sound driver update can help an old game with broader playback or rendering failures, but it does not normally recreate a missing Indeo DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation through its full version is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns this DLL.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Downloading ir50_qcxoriginal.dll from an unauthorised DLL library can give you:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A different build with incompatible dependencies
- A modified or malicious file
- A file that belongs in a different application directory
- A replacement that hides the real installation problem
Filename and version matching alone are not enough to authenticate a DLL. Safe sources are the original application installer, legitimate installation media, a trusted backup, verified Windows repair, or a confirmed Windows Security quarantine item. Never use a random DLL download as the first-line repair.
Best Value
If the program still will not start
If reinstalling the application, checking quarantine, and repairing the relevant Windows components do not help:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Try a suitable older Windows compatibility mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Test again.
If the program depends on obsolete codec registration or other unsupported behavior, compatibility mode may not be enough. Run it in a supported older Windows environment or a virtual machine where appropriate. If the issue affects many unrelated programs, investigate malware, disk errors, Windows corruption, or a damaged user profile rather than focusing only on this filename.

Is ir50_qcxoriginal.dll a Windows system file?
It may be present as a Windows-distributed legacy component on some systems, but it can also be supplied by the application that uses it. Treat the requesting program as the starting point.
Is it a 64-bit DLL because I use 64-bit Windows?
No. The recorded file is 32-bit. A 32-bit application can use it on 64-bit Windows, but a 64-bit program cannot use it as a replacement for a 64-bit dependency.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64?
Only if a trusted repair process or the owning application specifically places it there. Do not copy an unverified file manually, and do not assume every application expects the Windows directory.
Will SFC restore the file?
Only if it is a protected Windows component and Windows has a valid replacement. SFC will not reliably restore a private copy shipped with an old game.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does the error say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of the named DLL may be missing, blocked, incompatible, or the calling program may be loading the wrong architecture.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Not as a routine fix. This codec is not documented as a self-registering COM DLL, and registration does not repair missing dependencies.
Is Indeo supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Modern Windows treats Indeo as obsolete and has restricted or disabled it in various contexts. A particular legacy program may still work after repair or compatibility adjustments, but the presence of the DLL does not guarantee compatibility.
