nsarchive10.dll is most strongly associated with Autodesk 3ds Max, particularly a reported 3ds Max 2017 startup failure. It is not a Windows system DLL, so downloading a replacement and copying it into System32 is usually the wrong fix.
The safest path is to identify which 3ds Max installation requested the file, check whether antivirus removed it, then repair or reinstall that Autodesk installation using a fresh installer.
Before you repair anything
Note when the error appears:
- While 3ds Max is starting
- During installation or repair
- When opening a scene or rendering
- After installing a renderer or plug-in
- Immediately after an antivirus event, Windows update, disk cleanup, or Autodesk update
Also check whether the file exists. Open File Explorer and search the Autodesk installation folder for nsarchive10.dll. If it exists but 3ds Max still fails, the named file may have a missing dependency, incorrect permissions, or a damaged installation.
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Fix 1: Check antivirus quarantine, then repair 3ds Max
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution for a missing Autodesk application DLL.
Check Windows Security
- Press Windows, type Windows Security, and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
nsarchive10.dll, 3ds Max, the Autodesk installer, or a file removed during installation. - If the file came directly from a genuine Autodesk installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, select the entry and choose Restore or Allow on device, if available.
- If the source is uncertain, do not restore it. Download a fresh installer from Autodesk instead.
Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine and history pages. Check those as well. Autodesk has documented cases where antivirus software quarantined or replaced files in the extracted C:Autodesk installation tree, sometimes leaving zero-byte or incomplete files.
Repair the installation
- Close 3ds Max and any Autodesk desktop processes.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for Autodesk 3ds Max.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching version.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or the Autodesk maintenance option shown.
- Follow the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and launch 3ds Max.
If there is no repair option, or repair completes without restoring the file, uninstall the affected 3ds Max version and reinstall it from a newly downloaded Autodesk installer. Do not reuse an incomplete installer extraction.
If an installer was extracted to C:Autodesk, remove the incomplete extraction only after the installer has closed, download the installer again, and retry. Keep security software active unless you are performing a short, controlled diagnostic test permitted by your security policy. If temporarily disabling protection identifies the cause, turn it back on immediately and create an appropriate exclusion only through your security administrator or antivirus documentation.

The repair succeeded if:
- 3ds Max opens without the DLL message
- The file is present in the application’s own installation directory
- The installer no longer reports missing files
- The same renderer or plug-in operation completes normally
If the error remains, continue with the settings reset and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Reset 3ds Max user settings
Time needed: 5 minutes
A damaged profile or plug-in path can prevent startup even when nsarchive10.dll is present.
- Close 3ds Max.
- Open File Explorer.
- Paste this path into the address bar:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalAutodesk3dsMax20XX - 64bitENU
- Replace
<username>with your Windows account name and20XXwith the installed 3ds Max release. - Right-click the
ENUfolder and select Rename. - Rename it to
ENU_old. - Start 3ds Max.
3ds Max should create a new ENU folder with default settings.
What success looks like
If 3ds Max starts, the original problem was likely a corrupted setting, custom plug-in path, or profile file. Reapply custom settings gradually rather than copying the entire old folder back at once.
If the application still reports nsarchive10.dll, the installation or one of its dependencies needs attention.
Fix 3: Check the application architecture and Visual C++ runtime
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 64-bit program requires compatible 64-bit components. Public catalogue information associates one purported build of nsarchive10.dll with a 64-bit Autodesk application, but that metadata is not an Autodesk-authoritative specification. Do not use it to select an unknown DLL download.
To check the installed 3ds Max architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Find 3ds Max and note the release and installation details.
- In File Explorer, open the 3ds Max installation directory.
- Right-click the main 3ds Max executable and select Properties.
- Select the Details tab and record the product information shown.
Autodesk has documented Visual C++ runtime corruption as a cause of related 3ds Max plug-in load failures. This does not prove that the runtime is the cause of this particular filename, but repairing the matching runtime is reasonable when the file exists and Windows reports a module-load failure.

Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page to obtain the supported package. The architecture must match the application:
- Use
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit 3ds Max installation. - Use
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - A 32-bit runtime alone will not satisfy a 64-bit dependency.
After installing or repairing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch 3ds Max.
- Try the operation that originally failed.
If the error changes to a different missing DLL, the original file may now be loading and the remaining message identifies another dependency.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
nsarchive10.dll is an application DLL, not a protected Windows component. SFC and DISM normally will not recreate it. Use them when several unrelated Windows applications are failing, Windows itself is unstable, or system files are also reporting corruption.
- Press Windows, type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test 3ds Max again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test 3ds Max after restarting. If both commands report no integrity violations but the Autodesk error remains, stop repeating them and repair 3ds Max instead.

Fix 5: Reinstall a damaged renderer or plug-in
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A failed optional component can leave 3ds Max unable to start. This is especially relevant to older 3ds Max 2017 installations where additional rendering components, including Mental Ray deployments, may have been installed separately.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the renderer, plug-in, or Autodesk component installed near the time the error began.
- Uninstall that component.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the matching installer from the component’s official Autodesk or vendor source.
- Reinstall it for the exact 3ds Max release and architecture.
- Launch 3ds Max before restoring custom plug-in paths.
If 3ds Max starts after removing a plug-in, reinstall plug-ins one at a time. The first one that brings the error back is the likely trigger.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the failure is broader
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A graphics driver is not the normal source of a missing nsarchive10.dll file. Driver work becomes relevant if 3ds Max also shows viewport crashes, rendering failures, black screens, or failures in other 3D applications.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Obtain the correct driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer.
- Install it, restart Windows, and test 3ds Max.
Do not use Device Manager to search for the missing DLL. It manages hardware drivers, not Autodesk application libraries.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and matching driver packages can be tedious. Avoid DLL download sites, registry cleaners, and automated DLL download sites utilities for this error. An unknown replacement can be:
- The wrong 3ds Max release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Modified, incomplete, or incompatible
- A file containing malware
- Installed in a location where another application loads it accidentally
Never copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 merely because the error names a DLL. Application-private files belong with the application, and Windows searches application directories as part of its DLL loading process.

Do not run:
regsvr32 nsarchive10.dll
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. An archive or runtime library generally is not self-registering. Registration may produce a DllRegisterServer was not found error and does not repair a damaged 3ds Max installation.

- Check antivirus history again, including enterprise endpoint logs.
