Roblox Error Code 288 means that the server instance you were playing in has shut down. It is usually not a ban, account suspension, or proof that your internet connection failed. Leave the experience and join it again; Roblox should place you in another server. If the error keeps returning, the problem may affect that experience, its servers, or Roblox itself.
What does Roblox Error Code 288 mean?
The associated message is:
The server has shut down (Error Code: 288).
This means the Roblox server instance hosting your session stopped running, so Roblox disconnected everyone still connected to it. You cannot repair or restart that individual server from your device.
Roblox does not currently include Error Code 288 in its official Roblox Error Codes list. Roblox says players should contact Support when an error code is not listed.
How to fix Error Code 288
- Leave the experience. Close the error message and return to the experience page or Roblox home screen.
- Join the experience again. Rejoining normally connects you to a different server instance.
- Choose another public server if available. Some experiences provide server-selection controls, but the menu location and label can differ by experience and platform. There is no single universally documented Roblox menu path for this.
If the error happened once, rejoining is usually all you need to do. Do not keep trying to fix the shut-down server itself: it is no longer running.

Why does Error Code 288 happen?
Several server-side situations can produce the message:
- The developer deliberately shut down active servers for maintenance, an update, testing, or a bug fix.
- The server crashed because of a script failure, excessive memory use, or another internal resource problem.
- The Roblox platform or backend experienced a server-health incident.
- A problem affected a particular experience or a subset of players.
A June 2026 Roblox Developer Forum report described an incident that caused elevated Code 288 disconnects and said Roblox had mitigated the incident while investigating a longer-term correction. That report illustrates why repeated Code 288 errors can sometimes be a platform problem rather than something wrong with your device.
Is Error Code 288 a ban?
No. Code 288 by itself does not indicate that Roblox banned or suspended your account, nor does it show that you were removed from the experience for moderation reasons. It describes a server shutdown. A moderation notice would be a separate message and issue.

Does Error Code 288 mean your internet is bad?
Not necessarily. A server can shut down while your connection is working normally, so restarting your router or changing DNS is not a verified direct fix for Code 288.

What to do if it keeps happening
If it happens once in one experience
Rejoin and, if possible, select a different server. A single shutdown usually points to that server instance or a temporary event affecting the experience.

If it repeatedly happens in the same experience
Check whether the experience has announced maintenance or an update. Repeated shutdowns may indicate an experience-side bug, server resource problem, script failure, or deliberate server cycling. Try another experience as a comparison. If other experiences work normally, the issue is more likely limited to the original experience.
If it happens across several experiences
Check Roblox’s official status channels and consider whether you are also seeing general loading or connection failures. If the symptoms match Roblox’s connection guidance, work through its documented checks for supported browsers, security settings, wireless connectivity, ad-blockers, ports, and firewall or router configuration.

If the message says “Unknown Error”
A Roblox Developer Forum report from October 2025 said a display bug that showed Code 288 as “Unknown Error” was fixed and that the more useful message was restored. “Unknown Error” may therefore reflect an older or incorrectly displayed version of the message rather than a different error.

Fixes you should not treat as Code 288 solutions
Restarting the router, flushing DNS, editing the Windows Registry, running PowerShell or Command Prompt commands, clearing browser cache, and reinstalling Roblox do not restart a Roblox experience server. Roblox does not document any of these as a specific Code 288 fix.
Reinstallation can be relevant if you have a separate client-installation problem, but it is not the logical first response to a message saying that the server shut down. Likewise, the official connection article mentions reinstalling Roblox as general connection guidance, not as a Code 288 procedure.

- The exact error message and code
- The experience name and its link, if available
- Your device model
- Your operating-system version
- The steps that reproduce the issue
- Any recent device, network, Roblox, or experience changes
Those details match the information Roblox requests for persistent connection problems and give Support enough context to distinguish a server incident from a client or network issue.
Bottom line
Error Code 288 means the Roblox server you were using shut down. Leave and rejoin the experience, or choose another available server. Treat it as a server or platform problem unless you are also experiencing broader connection failures; do not assume it is a ban or automatically blame your internet.
