The fastest documented way to farm the Borderlands 4 Crit Knife is the Driller Hole boss in Carcadia Burn. Penetrator is not a separate legendary weapon or a guaranteed boss drop: it is a purple Throwing Knife augment, commonly called the “Crit Knife,” and is currently documented as a world drop with no dedicated loot pool. That means Driller Hole gives you efficient chances at the item rather than a guaranteed Penetrator roll.
For the best results, unlock Driller Hole through Unpaid Tab, kill the boss quickly, use the southeast exit to loot the Red Chest, and repeat. When you obtain a knife, check the item card for the Penetrator augment—many purple Throwing Knives do not qualify.

What the Crit Knife actually is
“Crit Knife” is the community name for a purple-rarity Throwing Knife with the Penetrator augment. It is a world drop, so it can appear from bosses, Badass enemies, ordinary chests, and activity rewards. Current coverage does not verify Saw’s Clench, GENONE, Lockjaw K-7, or any other boss as a dedicated Penetrator source. The item’s world-drop status is the most important fact when choosing a farm: no boss can guarantee the augment.
Verify the item itself rather than relying on its color, manufacturer, name, or the fact that it is a Throwing Knife. The item card must explicitly show Penetrator. Current item and farming coverage identifies the qualifying roll and explains the world-drop limitation.

Fastest documented farm: Driller Hole
Driller Hole is the strongest repeatable option currently documented for hunting Penetrator rolls because the encounter is short, it produces frequent Ordnance drops, and its reward room contains another Red Chest. It is not a dedicated Crit Knife farm; it is an efficient way to generate repeated opportunities for a world-drop Throwing Knife.
Location and unlock requirement
- Region: Carcadia Burn
- Route: Queen’s Cradle → Tonnage Peel → Carcadia Burn
- Required mission: Complete the main mission Unpaid Tab
The repeatable loop
- Travel to Driller Hole after unlocking the encounter.
- Defeat the boss as quickly as your build allows.
- After the kill, take the southeast door that opens.
- Loot the Red Chest in the reward room.
- Return and repeat the encounter.
The chest is worth checking every run because it adds another loot source without requiring a separate activity. Pick up only useful gear when possible: prolonged farming can leave large amounts of loot on the ground, and community reports associate heavily accumulated drops with performance or frame-rate deterioration. That performance issue is anecdotal, not an officially documented loot-system rule.
How to beat Driller Hole efficiently
The documented elemental sequence is Armor first, then Flesh. Bring or switch to Corrosive or Cryo for the Armor phase, then use Incendiary once the boss exposes Flesh. Matching damage to the current health-bar type reduces wasted damage and makes the short-loop strategy more practical.
Your exact loadout will determine the fastest clear, but the farm has a simple priority order:

- Carry an effective Armor answer for the opening phase.
- Keep Incendiary damage available for Flesh.
- Favor burst damage and quick boss access over a slower build designed for general exploration.
- Loot the Red Chest before starting the next run.
There is no verified Penetrator drop-rate figure in the current sources. Do not interpret a run without a Throwing Knife—or a run with several non-Penetrator knives—as evidence that the encounter is broken. Each clear creates opportunities for a world drop, but none guarantees the augment.
How to use Penetrator once it drops
The current guide describes Penetrator as creating a five-second target window after the knife connects. The reliable sequence is:
- Throw the knife and make sure it hits the target.
- Immediately activate your Action Skill or damage buffs.
- Use your highest-damage attacks during the remaining window.
- If the boss survives, throw the knife again and repeat the sequence.
A miss does not apply the effect, so rethrow rather than spending your burst rotation on an unmarked target. Likewise, activating the Action Skill before the knife connects wastes part of the five-second window.
Important Crit Knife patch history
Early Crit Knife advice is unreliable because Penetrator’s behavior changed after launch. Reports described an original interaction that raised critical-hit chance to 100% for five seconds and enabled an unintended damage loop. GameSpot reported that an October 2025 adjustment changed the intended behavior to a flat 30% critical-hit chance for five seconds.

Gearbox’s October 30, 2025 update notes specifically state that Penetrator was corrected because it had unintentionally been setting all attacks to a 30% critical chance. A separate report described a temporary bug in which repeated throws could stack the effect as high as 90%, but that is not a dependable current mechanic.
Therefore, treat these claims as outdated or unverified:
- One knife permanently guarantees critical hits.
- Every hit will always critically strike during normal use.
- Three knives always produce 90% critical chance.
Build around the documented five-second window and confirm behavior in your current game version rather than relying on launch-era videos.
Other ways to hunt Penetrator
Encore Machine loops
Encore Machine loops can reset bosses quickly and reduce travel or loading time. They require Encore currency, and the cost scales with level. The current sources do not verify a universal exact cost table or a single platform-independent interaction label, so avoid guides that present an unverified button name or menu path as authoritative.

Weekly Big Encore
Weekly Big Encore requires 100 Eridium, completion of the story, and UVHM enabled, according to the current guide. It is a more difficult boss variant intended to provide more loot per clear. However, the featured boss changes over time. Official update notes have listed different variants, including Primordial Guardian Origo, Foundry Freaks, Vile Prototype, and Divisioner. Check the live weekly activity rather than assuming any one boss is permanently featured.
The current drop-rate guide also states that Big Encore and Big Encore Shiny chances are not affected by the UVH scaling boosts described for most dedicated loot rates. Since Penetrator is a world drop rather than a dedicated drop, those dedicated-drop changes do not turn Big Encore into a guaranteed Crit Knife source.
General activity farming
Drill sites, vault-style arenas, world activities, and chest-heavy content can all produce purple gear, but they are less focused than a fast Driller Hole loop. Community testing has reported unusually high rewards from Roadbirds, particularly for The Knife and purple gear, but that evidence is player data rather than an official Gearbox drop-table confirmation. Treat Roadbirds as an alternative worth trying, not as a proven dedicated Penetrator farm.

Gearbox permanently increased Legendary drop-rate chances and dedicated boss-drop rates on January 15, 2026. On January 29, UVH levels began scaling almost all dedicated loot rates; one published example gives a 9% base rate becoming 23% at UVH7. On March 5, Gearbox standardized dedicated-item drop chances across base-game bosses, Invincibles, and Bounty Packs. Version 1.6, released April 30, also increased world-boss spawn frequency and shortened World Event downtime.

Those changes improve the broader loot environment, but they do not establish Penetrator as a dedicated drop. The March standardization does not assign the augment to a particular boss, and dedicated-loot scaling should not be presented as a verified Penetrator-specific multiplier. Use a higher difficulty only if your clear speed and survivability remain good enough to increase loot per unit of time.
Troubleshooting the farm
“I found a purple Throwing Knife, but it is not a Crit Knife.”
Check the augment list. Only a knife displaying Penetrator qualifies; purple rarity alone is not enough.
“The effect did not activate.”
Confirm that the knife connected with the target. A miss does not apply the effect. Rethrow, then begin the damage sequence.
“My Action Skill damage felt weak.”
You may have started the burst too early. Throw first, wait for the hit, then activate the Action Skill and spend your high-damage attacks inside the five-second window.

Reapply Penetrator and repeat the sequence. The effect is a short damage window, not a permanent boss debuff.
“The farm feels worse after many kills.”
There is no verified hidden anti-farm penalty in the current evidence. Community players have reported perceived drop streaks, but the cited discussion did not provide quantitative support for that conclusion. Clear the arena and manage ground loot if performance begins to degrade.

For most players, the practical answer is to farm Driller Hole, use the Armor-to-Flesh elemental counter, loot the southeast Red Chest, and inspect every Throwing Knife for Penetrator. Do not waste time chasing an alleged dedicated boss until Gearbox or a reliable current loot table confirms one.
