It is not a missing language pack or translation file. Fix it by matching the mod’s Minecraft version, Forge version, and instance version—or remove the incompatible mod.
What the JavaFML error means
JavaFML is Forge’s mod-loader language provider and version identifier. The number in the error is the minimum provider version required by the mod. Forge also reports the version it actually found.
For example, a mod requiring javafml:48 cannot load when the instance provides JavaFML 47. A typical report may say:
needs language provider javafml:48 or above to load
We have found 47
The numbers usually indicate a Minecraft-version mismatch. In an official Forge support example, JavaFML 41 corresponded to Minecraft 1.19, while JavaFML 42 corresponded to Minecraft 1.19.1. A Forge mod can therefore be from the correct loader family but still target the wrong Minecraft release.

The fastest fix
- Read the entire error and note the affected
.jarfilename, the required JavaFML number, and the “We have found” number. - Check the Minecraft version of the instance you launched.
- Replace the mod with its Forge build for that exact Minecraft version.
- If no matching build exists, remove the mod or move the instance to the Minecraft version supported by the mod.
- Launch the Forge installation for that instance—not vanilla Minecraft or another mod loader.
Do not assume that installing the newest Forge release will solve the problem. Forge versions are tied to Minecraft versions, and the latest release is not automatically compatible with an older modpack.
1. Identify the mismatched mod
Start with the filename named in the crash report. Mod filenames commonly include the intended Minecraft version. For example, a file such as voicechat-forge-1.20.2-2.4.24.jar is a warning sign if your instance is Minecraft 1.20.1.
The same mismatch can appear with a file such as torchhit-1.19.1-...-forge.jar placed in a Minecraft 1.19 instance. Although both files use Forge, their required JavaFML versions differ.
If several files require the same newer JavaFML version, treat them as a group. A modpack may contain multiple 1.20.2 mods inside a 1.20.1 instance; replacing only the first mod named in the error will not be enough.

2. Match the mod to Minecraft
Download the mod build marked for the exact Minecraft version used by your instance. Minecraft 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.19, and 1.19.1 are separate targets even when the mod is otherwise from the same project.
Also confirm that the download is the Forge build. Fabric, NeoForge, and Forge files are not interchangeable. Keep the mod’s required Minecraft version, loader, and dependency requirements aligned with the profile or modpack.
3. Install the corresponding Forge release
If you intend to keep the mod rather than downgrade it, install Forge for the mod’s Minecraft version from the official Forge downloads page. That page lists releases by Minecraft version and separates the installer, changelog, MDK, and direct download.
For example, upgrading Forge from a 1.20.1-era release to a 1.20.2-era release may satisfy a JavaFML requirement, but only if the Minecraft instance and every other mod are also intended for 1.20.2. Changing Forge alone does not convert a 1.20.1 installation into a compatible 1.20.2 modpack.

4. Launch the correct edition and profile
Forge mods require Minecraft: Java Edition. The official Minecraft download page identifies Java Edition as the PC edition with extensive mod support; Bedrock Edition is a separate environment and does not use Forge Java mods.
Use the Forge installation/profile associated with the instance. Do not start the same game directory with vanilla Minecraft, Fabric, NeoForge, or a different Forge profile. Launcher labels and menus can vary by launcher release, so verify the selected profile by its Minecraft and Forge versions rather than relying on a particular menu path.
5. Remove or replace the file when no compatible build exists
If the mod has no Forge release for your instance’s Minecraft version, remove it or change the entire instance to the version it supports. Back up saves before changing a modpack, particularly when removing content mods.
Updating Forge alone cannot make a mod compiled for a different Minecraft release compatible. In one Forge support example, changing the loader version altered the error, but the setup still failed until the Minecraft and mod versions were aligned.

Why common fixes do not work
- Adding a language file: JavaFML is not a translation or
langJSON file. It is supplied by the compatible Forge loader. - Installing JavaFML manually: There is no separate JavaFML package you should download and place in the
modsfolder. - Always updating Forge: The newest Forge version may target a newer Minecraft release than your modpack.
- Updating Java first: The error is usually about the Forge loader version, not the Java runtime. A Forge 1.20.1 crash example used Java 17.0.8 but failed because Forge 47 was present while the mods required JavaFML 48.
- Replacing one file only: If several mods were downloaded for a newer Minecraft release, the entire mismatched set must be downgraded or the instance must be upgraded consistently.
Does this mean Java itself is outdated?
Usually, no. The wording mentions “JavaFML,” but the failure concerns Forge’s mod-language provider version. The most useful comparison is the requested number versus the number found in the report.
Java requirements still depend on the specific Minecraft and Forge release. Forge’s current development documentation lists a 64-bit Java 21 Development Kit as a development prerequisite, but that does not prove that every released Minecraft instance requires Java 21. Use the Java version required by the particular Minecraft/Forge combination rather than changing Java solely because of this error. See Forge’s official getting-started documentation for its development prerequisites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the error appeared after updating mods
Check whether the update changed some files to a newer Minecraft version while leaving the instance itself unchanged. This commonly happens when a mod manager updates individual mods but the profile remains on an older release.
Choose one consistent path:
- Downgrade every affected mod to the instance’s Minecraft version; or
- Upgrade the Minecraft and Forge profile, then verify that every mod and dependency supports the new version.
Do not mix both approaches. A partially upgraded profile can produce repeated JavaFML errors or new dependency failures.

Where to find logs
If the affected file is unclear, inspect the full crash report and debug.log. Forge support commonly requests both when diagnosing this error. If there is no crash report, provide launcher_log.txt from the Minecraft folder.
For CurseForge installations, the relevant location is the CurseForge Minecraft installation directory, commonly shown as curseforge/minecraft/Install. Search the log for javafml, language provider, the mod filename, and the “We have found” line.
Version-alignment checklist
- Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition
- The intended Minecraft version of the instance
- The mod’s exact Minecraft version
- The Forge build for that Minecraft version
- The Forge, not Fabric or another loader, mod file
- All related mods and dependencies from the same version family
- The Forge profile selected at launch
The key comparison is simple: if the mod requires JavaFML X and Forge provides a lower number, use the mod’s matching Minecraft/Forge build, update the complete instance consistently, or remove the mod.
