If Xbox Game Bar is not working in Windows 11, first identify what has failed: the Win + G overlay, recording, saved clips, audio, or the controller shortcut. Turn Game Bar on, restart Windows, update Windows and Microsoft Store apps, then use Repair before trying Reset or reinstalling the app.
Find the symptom first
| What is happening? | Start with |
|---|---|
Win + G does nothing |
Enablement, shortcut checks, and app repair |
| Game Bar opens, then closes or shows blank widgets | Store updates, Repair, and Reset |
Capture is unavailable or Win + Alt + R does nothing |
Capture settings, app focus, and compatibility checks |
| Recording starts and stops immediately | Storage, permissions, graphics conflicts, and the specific game |
| A recording was saved but cannot be found | Videos > Captures |
| Video works but audio or microphone input is missing | Game Bar’s Capturing settings |
| The controller’s Xbox button does nothing | Controller connection and the Game Bar controller setting |
| Game Bar works in one game but not another | Game-specific compatibility or content restrictions |
| Microsoft Store or Xbox components are unavailable | Account, organization policy, Store repair, and Windows updates |
Before troubleshooting, test both shortcuts inside an app or game: Win + G should open the overlay, while Win + Alt + R starts or stops recording. Microsoft also documents Win + Alt + M for toggling the microphone during recording. Microsoft’s Game Bar guide lists the current shortcuts and capture behavior.
1. Turn Xbox Game Bar on
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the setting that enables Xbox Game Bar for recording game clips, chatting, and game invitations.
- Turn the toggle on, then test
Win + G.
The exact wording and location can vary slightly by Windows 11 release or language, so use the Settings search box if the menu does not match. Game Bar must be enabled before its keyboard shortcuts can work.
2. Restart, update Windows, and update Store apps
Restart Windows before trying more disruptive fixes—especially if the problem began after a Windows update, Microsoft Store update, graphics-driver update, or Xbox-related installation.

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install everything available.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library, then Get updates or Check for updates, depending on the Store interface.
- Allow updates to finish and restart Windows again.
Microsoft places restarting, Windows updates, and Store-app updates near the beginning of its recommended troubleshooting sequence. See Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance and Store update instructions.
Do not confuse ordinary Game Bar requirements with newer Xbox mode features. Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later; that requirement should not automatically be applied to standard Game Bar opening or recording. Read Microsoft’s Xbox mode documentation.
3. Repair Xbox Game Bar
Repair is the safest app-specific fix because it attempts to correct the installation without the more disruptive effects of a reset.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xbox Game Bar.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows, then test both
Win + GandWin + Alt + R.
Repair should not remove your personal recordings. Existing Game Bar preferences may remain. If the button is unavailable, or the repair completes without changing anything, continue to Reset.

- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
4. Reset Xbox Game Bar
Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options, select Reset, and confirm. Restart Windows afterward.
Reset is more aggressive than Repair and can remove the app’s local data or settings. It is not the same as resetting Windows: it affects Game Bar, not the operating system or your saved recordings in the Videos folder. If the Game Bar enablement toggle has reverted to off, turn it on again before testing.
5. Clear the Microsoft Store cache
Use this step when Microsoft Store will not update or reinstall Game Bar:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Return to Library and check for updates.
Microsoft says the blank window normally closes automatically after roughly 10 seconds. wsreset.exe clears the Store cache; it does not reinstall Game Bar or repair Windows generally. See Microsoft’s Store-cache instructions.

6. Reinstall Xbox Game Bar
Reinstall only after updating, Repair, Reset, and Store-cache recovery have failed. In Microsoft Store, open Library, find Xbox Game Bar if it is listed, and select its install or reinstall option. Restart Windows when the installation finishes, enable Game Bar again, and test it.
If Game Bar is missing from Microsoft Store or Installed apps, do not download an unofficial AppX package. Check that you are signed in with a Microsoft account, install pending Windows updates, and restart. Store availability can also depend on region, compatibility, local-account use, or administrator policy. On a work or school PC, contact the administrator or use Microsoft’s Microsoft Store availability guidance.
7. Repair Windows system files
Use DISM and SFC after app-specific fixes fail, or when other Windows features are also malfunctioning. This requires an administrator Command Prompt.
- Search Start for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for SFC to reach 100%, restart Windows, and test Game Bar. Look for a successful completion message; the wording can vary. If either command cannot complete, restart and try once more, then use Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance rather than deleting system folders or applying registry edits. Microsoft documents the DISM-then-SFC sequence here.

Fix capture, audio, and saved-file problems
Game Bar opens but recording does not
Make sure Game Bar is enabled, the intended game or app has focus, and you are pressing Win + Alt + R together. Test another game or ordinary application. If recording fails only in one title, the problem is likely specific to that app or its rendering/content-protection behavior. Some apps or content may prevent capture, so Game Bar cannot be guaranteed to record every screen surface.
The recording starts and stops immediately
Check that the system drive has free space and test a different app. A storage problem, permissions issue, graphics-driver conflict, or app-specific restriction can stop a recording even when the overlay itself works. Do not treat this as proof that the entire Game Bar installation is broken.
Find recordings and screenshots
Open Videos > Captures, or enter this path in File Explorer:
%USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures
Microsoft documents recordings as MP4 files and screenshots as PNG files. Check this folder before concluding that capture failed.

Restore missing audio
Open Game Bar with Win + G, open Settings, and inspect the Capturing section. Check the selected audio scope, including system audio, and confirm that the microphone is not muted. During recording, Win + Alt + M toggles the microphone.
Fix the controller Xbox button
If Win + G works but pressing the controller’s Xbox button does not, Game Bar itself may be fine.
- Confirm Windows recognizes the controller over USB or Bluetooth.
- Test Game Bar with the keyboard shortcut.
- Open Game Bar settings and enable the option to open it with the controller’s Xbox button.
- Only investigate Xbox Accessories or controller updates if the controller itself is also malfunctioning.
This separates a controller connection or configuration problem from an application failure.
When to stop troubleshooting
Do not jump straight to Windows Reset. Registry edits, unofficial Game Bar downloads, generic driver-updater utilities, permanent antivirus disabling, and random PowerShell reinstall commands can create new problems and may vary by Windows release or package configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
If Repair, Reset, Store recovery, reinstall, and DISM/SFC do not help, contact Microsoft through Get Help or Microsoft Support. Use Windows recovery options only after backing up important files; some recovery choices can cause data loss. Review Microsoft’s recovery options.
If your actual requirement is simply recording gameplay or the desktop, rather than repairing Game Bar specifically, use a different capture application while you decide whether further Windows support is worthwhile.
