Overall, the desktop GeForce RTX 4060 is the more capable and flexible graphics platform, especially for 1080p and 1440p gaming, ray tracing, high-refresh displays, and adjustable settings. The PlayStation 5 remains highly competitive because developers target one fixed configuration and optimize each game accordingly. It is also a complete, easy-to-use gaming system, while the RTX 4060 is only one component of a PC.

The right choice depends on what you are buying: a graphics card upgrade, a complete computer, or a plug-and-play console.

RTX 4060 vs PS5: quick verdict

Priority Better choice Why
1080p high-refresh gaming RTX 4060 More settings flexibility, higher frame-rate potential and DLSS support
1440p gaming RTX 4060 A natural resolution target, provided settings are sensible and the PC is balanced
Ray tracing RTX 4060 Stronger feature support through dedicated RT and Tensor hardware plus DLSS
Simple television gaming PS5 Fixed hardware, straightforward setup and developer-tuned modes
Complete-system value Depends An RTX 4060 requires a complete PC; the PS5 already includes the required system hardware
Native 4K at maximum settings Neither Both commonly rely on reconstruction, reduced settings or dynamic resolution in demanding games

Do not interpret this as a claim that an RTX 4060 wins every game. A PS5 title can look excellent—or occasionally perform better than a poorly configured PC version—because the console’s hardware and software are tightly controlled.

What is actually being compared?

An RTX 4060 is a discrete desktop graphics card. It does not include a processor, memory, storage, motherboard, power supply, case, operating system or controller. A PS5 is a complete console containing all of those core platform components.

There are therefore two valid comparisons:

  1. GPU versus GPU: compare graphics features and likely rendering capability.
  2. Complete PC versus console: compare the cost, convenience and performance of an entire RTX 4060 system against a PS5.

NVIDIA announced the RTX 4060 at a historical starting MSRP of $299 in 2023. Sony’s original US launch prices were $399 for the PS5 Digital Edition and $499 for the disc model. Those are historical figures, not verified August 2026 street prices. Current pricing should be checked for the exact model and configuration before purchase.

Why teraflops do not settle the argument

The RTX 4060’s 15 shader TFLOPS and the PS5’s approximately 10.3 TFLOPS describe theoretical arithmetic throughput. They are not cross-platform gaming benchmarks.

The GPUs use different architectures, and their figures are calculated under different implementation assumptions. PS5 games are built for a single fixed target, while PC performance changes with the CPU, system memory, drivers, game patch, graphics API, settings and background processes. Console developers can also use dynamic resolution, temporal reconstruction, variable shading and carefully tuned presets to maintain a target frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ordinary shader TFLOPS also fail to describe the practical value of the RTX 4060’s dedicated RT and Tensor hardware. Conversely, the PS5’s 16 GB memory pool is larger on paper, but it is shared between the CPU and GPU rather than being 16 GB of dedicated graphics memory.

Consequently, it is not valid to calculate a fixed percentage advantage from 15 versus 10.3. The only meaningful comparison is the result in the same game, at comparable image-quality settings and with the rendering technique clearly identified.

Rasterized gaming: 1080p, 1440p and 4K

1080p

The RTX 4060 generally has more headroom at 1080p, particularly when paired with a competent processor. It gives you access to competitive presets, high-refresh monitors, driver-level options and game-specific settings that do not exist on a console.

A PS5 commonly targets 60 frames per second in performance mode, with some games offering 120 Hz modes at lower image quality. Its advantage is consistency: developers know the exact CPU, memory configuration and storage system they are targeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1440p

1440p is usually the RTX 4060’s most natural balance between clarity and performance. DLSS can provide additional headroom, and many games can run well with a high-quality preset rather than maximum settings.

The 8 GB VRAM buffer requires more care in newer titles. High-resolution textures, ray tracing and large asset pools can cause stutter or frame-time spikes even when the GPU’s raw rendering speed is otherwise sufficient.

The PS5 can output to a 1440p display, but its games are not generally built around a universal 1440p rendering profile. The console’s quality and performance modes remain the more important variables.

4K

Neither device should be described as a universal native-4K, maximum-settings machine. A PS5 can produce an impressive 4K television image, but many games use dynamic internal resolution, checkerboard-style techniques or temporal reconstruction. A 4K output signal does not prove that every frame was rendered internally at 3840×2160.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTX 4060 can output 4K and handles older, lighter or well-optimized games at that resolution. In demanding modern games, however, it often needs DLSS, reduced settings or a lower internal resolution. NVIDIA positions the card primarily as a 1080p-class product, with 1440p also practical depending on the game and settings.

Ray tracing: a clearer RTX 4060 advantage

Ray tracing is one of the strongest reasons to choose the RTX 4060. Its third-generation RT cores and fourth-generation Tensor cores are designed for modern lighting workloads and AI-assisted reconstruction. NVIDIA lists 35 RT TFLOPS for the card and supports features including DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction.

The PS5 also has hardware ray-tracing acceleration, but console implementations are title-specific. A game may offer a ray-traced quality mode at roughly 30 fps, a 60-fps performance mode with fewer effects, or a mixture of ray-traced and rasterized lighting. Developers decide the trade-offs rather than exposing a large PC-style settings menu.

The qualified verdict is that the RTX 4060 is usually the better platform for experimenting with ray tracing and tuning its cost. It is not guaranteed to look better in every game: a carefully optimized PS5 implementation can be more attractive than a poorly configured PC version.

DLSS, reconstruction and frame generation

DLSS Super Resolution renders a game internally below the display resolution and reconstructs the output using NVIDIA’s AI-assisted technique. This can improve the RTX 4060’s usable performance, particularly when the alternative is native rendering at a demanding resolution.

PS5 developers use their own reconstruction pipelines, dynamic-resolution systems and temporal techniques. Because the hardware is fixed, they can tune those systems precisely for the console. The result can be surprisingly close to a PC image in motion even when the internal resolution is lower than the output resolution.

DLSS Frame Generation is a separate feature. It inserts generated frames between conventionally rendered frames, so a displayed-frame counter can rise without providing the same responsiveness as rendering additional native frames. When evaluating it, separate:

Memory: 8 GB versus 16 GB unified

The RTX 4060 has 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM. The PS5 has 16 GB of GDDR6 unified memory, shared by its CPU and GPU. Saying that the PS5 has “16 GB of VRAM” is therefore inaccurate.

The PS5’s larger headline memory capacity helps developers manage assets within a controlled system, but it does not automatically make the console more powerful. The RTX 4060’s dedicated memory is faster to reason about from a PC graphics perspective, yet 8 GB can become a real limitation at 1440p or 4K with ultra textures, heavy ray tracing or extensive mods.

Symptoms can include texture pop-in, stutter and severe frame-time spikes. Lowering the texture setting is often more effective than lowering output resolution because textures consume memory independently of the number of output pixels. On PC, you can make that compromise yourself; on PS5, the developer determines the asset and streaming budget.

CPU, frame pacing and optimization

The PS5 uses an eight-core, 16-thread custom Zen 2 CPU with a variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz. An RTX 4060 PC might use an entry-level processor that limits high-refresh performance, or a much faster CPU that lets the GPU run with more headroom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This matters most at 1080p, high frame rates and in CPU-heavy open-world or simulation games. A balanced RTX 4060 PC can exceed the PS5’s frame-rate targets, but a weak CPU, slow memory, poor cooling or badly configured software can erase that advantage.

The PS5’s fixed hardware reduces configuration problems. There are no driver versions, motherboard firmware settings, background Windows processes or poorly matched components for the player to diagnose. That simplicity is a performance feature in practical use.

How to compare the two fairly

One game or one screenshot cannot establish a universal winner. A controlled comparison should use the same title and patch, and should record:

  • the PC’s CPU, RAM capacity and speed, Resizable BAR status, driver and Windows versions;
  • the exact console and PC graphics modes;
  • output resolution and internal render resolution, when available;
  • upscaling or reconstruction method;
  • ray-tracing settings;
  • average frame rate and 1% lows or frame-time consistency; and
  • image quality in motion, not only a paused screenshot.

Useful test categories include a competitive 1080p game, a rasterized open-world game, an RT-heavy title, a CPU-limited title, a game with DLSS, and a poorly optimized PC port. A PS5 quality mode targeting 30 fps should not be compared with an RTX 4060 at a low PC preset and then presented as “PS5 performance.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RTX 4060 stronger than the PS5?

Generally, yes as a graphics platform, especially at 1080p and 1440p, with ray tracing and high-refresh gaming. A PS5 can still match or exceed it in an individual game because of fixed-hardware optimization and different rendering modes.

Is the RTX 4060 good for 4K gaming?

It can output 4K and run selected games at that resolution, often with DLSS or reduced settings. It is better classified as a 1080p/1440p card than a native-4K ultra-settings solution.

Does the PS5 have 16 GB of VRAM?

No. It has 16 GB of unified GDDR6 system memory shared between the CPU and GPU. That is not equivalent to 16 GB of dedicated graphics VRAM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does DLSS make the RTX 4060 twice as fast as the PS5?

No universal conclusion is valid. DLSS can improve performance in supported games, while Frame Generation adds displayed frames without providing the same responsiveness as additional conventionally rendered frames.
