The deal was real, but it is no longer current. Engadget reported on December 1, 2025, that Samsung’s 512GB P9 microSD Express Card fell to $75 from a stated $100 reference price—a claimed saving of $25, or 25%. The associated deal listing is now marked expired, so the $75 price should not be treated as a live offer.

Why Switch 2 needs a microSD Express card

Nintendo Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only for storing downloadable software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots and videos. An ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card from the original Switch is not suitable for storing or loading Switch 2 games.

That is the important meaning of “Switch 2-compatible” in this deal: the P9 uses the required microSD Express standard, rather than receiving an exclusive Samsung-only certification. Nintendo supports compatible microSD Express cards up to 2TB. An existing conventional Switch card may still have screenshots or videos that can be imported into Switch 2 system memory, but it cannot serve as Switch 2 game storage. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.

Samsung P9 specifications

Specification Samsung P9 detail
Available capacities 256GB and 512GB
Express interface PCIe Gen 3.0 x1, NVMe 1.3, SD 7.1
Advertised sequential read speed Up to 800MB/s in SD Express mode
UHS-I fallback Up to 90MB/s
Speed classifications U3, V30 and A1
Warranty Limited three years
Form factor microSDXC

These are Samsung’s specifications from its P9 datasheet. The 800MB/s figure is an “up to” manufacturer claim based on testing the 512GB model with a PCIe test board. It should not be interpreted as a guaranteed transfer speed in every Switch 2 workload.

The P9 can also operate with UHS-I devices, but an older Nintendo Switch will not gain Express performance from it. The card’s main reason to buy it for Nintendo hardware is Switch 2’s Express requirement.

  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

What the card stores—and what it does not

When installed, a microSD Express card becomes the default location for downloadable software. It can also hold game updates, DLC, screenshots and video captures. It does not hold game-save data: Switch 2 saves remain in the console’s system memory. The card therefore expands game capacity, but it is not a replacement for save-data storage or backup systems.

Nintendo recommends using one card. Data spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined automatically onto a single card. If you replace a card, plan the transfer carefully rather than assuming that inserting both cards will merge their contents. Nintendo’s storage FAQ covers these rules and the console’s 2TB limit.

Is 512GB the right capacity?

  • 256GB: A sensible lower-cost choice for players who buy mostly physical games or keep a smaller digital library.
  • 512GB: The better middle ground for players who regularly download games, updates and DLC. This was the capacity featured in the $75 promotion.
  • 1TB or more: Worth considering for heavy digital buyers, provided the current price, availability and seller are competitive.

There is no reliable universal game count for a 512GB card. Download sizes vary widely and can grow with patches and DLC, so compare usable capacity and price per gigabyte rather than relying only on a percentage-off label.

Was $75 a good price?

At the time, $75 for 512GB was a notable deal because it combined substantial capacity with the microSD Express standard required by Switch 2. The claimed reduction from $100 represented $25 off. However, “25% off” describes the stated reference price, not necessarily the lowest recent market price, so the meaningful comparison is the card’s current price per gigabyte against other genuine Express cards.

Engadget’s same Cyber Monday coverage listed historical prices of $39 for the 256GB Samsung P9, about $49 for a 256GB Lexar PLAY PRO, about $60 for a 256GB SanDisk Express card and about $89 for a 512GB SanDisk Express card. Those were promotional snapshots from December 2025, not current prices or recommendations for September 2026.

SANDISK 512GB microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2
  • EPIC WORLDS, LOADED INSTANTLY. From the Mushroom Kingdom to Hyrule, your card delivers read speeds up to 880 MB/s[2] and write speeds up to 650 MB/s[2].
  • OFFICIALLY READY FOR NINTENDO SWITCH 2. Officially licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, this microSD Express card offers dependable, high-performance storage.
  • CAPTURE IN STUNNING CLARITY. Capture screenshots and record short video clips of your gameplay in Full HD.
  • ROOM FOR YOUR ADVENTURES. With capacities up to 512GB[1], your card gives you the freedom to store your digital games in one place.
  1. Confirm that the listing explicitly says microSD Express. “microSDXC” alone is not enough for Switch 2 game storage.
  2. Choose 256GB, 512GB or more according to your digital library and budget.
  3. Check the exact model, stock status, return policy and warranty coverage.
  4. Buy from a reputable retailer and be cautious of unusually low prices or ambiguous marketplace listings.
  5. Compare the current price per gigabyte with Lexar, SanDisk and Nintendo-licensed Express alternatives.

Samsung’s P9 announcement provides the manufacturer’s performance context. Nintendo also lists a Samsung microSD Express option among its Switch 2 accessories for buyers who prefer an official-branded route.

Installing the P9 in Switch 2

  1. Verify that the card is labeled microSD Express.
  2. Power off the console and insert the card into the Switch 2 card slot.
  3. Connect the console to the internet and allow any required system update.
  4. Format the card through the console if prompted.

Formatting permanently deletes data on the card. Back up screenshots and videos first. Game saves are not erased from the card because Nintendo stores them in system memory.

If Switch 2 does not recognize the card

Nintendo’s recommended troubleshooting path is:

  1. Power off Switch 2.
  2. Remove and reinsert the card.
  3. Check the card and slot for dirt or debris.
  4. Confirm that the card is genuinely microSD Express.
  5. Format it through the console if necessary.
  6. Replace the card if it remains undetected.

Follow Nintendo’s full microSD Express troubleshooting instructions before assuming the console or card is defective.

Verdict

The Samsung P9 512GB was a legitimate and attractive $75 Cyber Monday 2025 deal for Switch 2 owners who wanted substantial downloadable-game storage. It is still a technically appropriate card because it meets the microSD Express requirement, offers up to 800MB/s sequential read performance on Samsung’s test setup and includes a limited three-year warranty. But the promotion has expired. Buy the P9 today only if a live, reputable listing offers a competitive current price; do not purchase a conventional Switch microSD card simply because it is cheaper.
