Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFortnite’s “Failed to Download Supervised Settings” message usually means the game could not retrieve or apply account-related settings during startup. It does not automatically mean parental controls are blocking the account.
Work through these fixes in order: check Epic’s service status, restart Fortnite and your device, test another network, clear the platform cache, review the Epic account and parental controls, and verify Fortnite files on PC. Do not reinstall the game or unlink a console account until the lower-risk checks are complete.
Quick fix checklist
- Check the Epic Games Public Status page for Fortnite, login, authentication, or account-service incidents.
- Exit Fortnite completely and restart your PC, console, or mobile device.
- Restart your modem or router and temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, and heavy downloads.
- Try Fortnite on a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
- Clear the cache using Epic’s current platform-specific instructions.
- On PC, verify Fortnite’s files in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Check the correct Epic account, parental controls, consent, and linked-account information.
- Contact Epic Player Support if the error continues across devices or networks.
What the error means
Fortnite is probably failing while requesting or applying an account-settings response before login finishes. That interpretation is based on Epic’s official guidance for the closely related cloud-download/client-settings failure, which identifies service outages, cache problems, connection issues, DNS problems, and potentially corrupted cloud settings as possible causes.
Epic has not published a dedicated universal fix for this exact wording in the supplied guidance. The word supervised also does not prove that a child account or parental restriction is responsible.

1. Check whether Fortnite or Epic is down
Open status.epicgames.com and look for incidents involving Fortnite, Epic Online Services, login, authentication, account services, matchmaking, or game services. If an incident is active, wait for Epic to report recovery before changing files or account settings. Reinstalling Fortnite cannot repair an Epic-side outage.
2. Restart Fortnite, your device, and your router
Exit Fortnite instead of leaving it suspended, restart the device, and launch the game again after the system fully boots. Then restart the modem or router. Pause large downloads, streaming, VPNs, proxies, and other traffic while testing.
If Fortnite works through a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, the installation is less likely to be the cause. Focus on the router, DNS resolver, network filtering, firewall, VPN, proxy, or ISP. Epic’s connection guide covers these checks.
3. Clear Fortnite’s platform cache
Use Epic’s cache hub for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and other platform-specific instructions. Platform menus and button combinations can change, so avoid deleting random Fortnite folders.

Clearing a cache is not the same as deleting your Epic account, skins, or online progress. However, local settings and menu names vary by platform, so follow the current instructions for your device.
Windows: clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher from the system tray.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430if they exist. - Relaunch the launcher and start Fortnite.
These are the cache folders in Epic’s official launcher-cache procedure; the launcher recreates them.
4. Test the connection and DNS
Epic recommends trying a public DNS when connection problems prevent access to Epic services. A DNS change can help if your ISP’s resolver is returning stale or failed results, but it will not fix an outage or a damaged account-side settings record. Follow Epic’s connection instructions for your operating system or platform rather than assuming one DNS provider is universally best.
Also check router parental-control or filtering features, firewall rules, antivirus blocking, and Epic-domain allowlisting. Do not make port forwarding your first step; it is an advanced change and is not necessary for every household network.

5. Check the Epic account and parental controls
Review this area especially if the problem began after an age, consent, or parental-control change; if other parent-permission messages appear; or if Fortnite works on one Epic-linked device but not another.
Confirm the correct Epic account
Sign in using the same PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo provider originally used for Fortnite. Console-created accounts can have incomplete Epic information, and a browser may automatically sign in to the wrong account. Epic recommends using a private or incognito window if the wrong account keeps appearing, then completing any missing account information. See Epic’s linked-account guidance.
Do not casually unlink a console account. Unlinking can cause access or progression problems and is not a general fix for this error.
Review Epic parental controls
In Fortnite, open the player icon in the upper-right, choose the menu icon, select Parental Controls, then Set Up Parental Controls. Confirm or add the parent-controlled email address, create the six-digit PIN, and review the available restrictions. Account-level settings can also be managed by signing in to Epic, opening Parental Controls, entering the PIN, and adjusting restrictions through Epic’s account settings instructions.

Epic says the PIN itself does not restrict the account; the selected settings do. The PIN cannot be removed after it is set, although restrictions can be adjusted or turned off. A parent or guardian should manage a child account’s consent and restrictions. Epic’s in-game controls also do not replace PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Android, or iOS family controls.
6. Verify Fortnite files on PC
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find Fortnite and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for validation and repair to finish before launching the game.
Epic says verification checks for damaged or corrupted files and repairs differences without affecting saved data. It is particularly reasonable after an interrupted update, crash, forced shutdown, antivirus quarantine, or drive problem. It is less likely to fix an Epic account or cloud-settings failure, so it is not a universal solution. See Epic’s file-verification guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Advanced PC troubleshooting
If the error affects only one Windows PC, Epic’s broader Fortnite PC troubleshooting guide also covers running the launcher as administrator, checking video drivers, disabling conflicting background applications, examining security software, checking the drive, reinstalling the launcher, moving the game to another drive, and reinstalling Fortnite.
Keep these steps near the end. Reinstallation cannot fix an active outage, an incorrect account link, or corrupted cloud-side settings. A full Windows reset is disproportionate, risks data loss, and should not be treated as a normal Fortnite fix.

Community workarounds: use caution
Some players report that repeatedly selecting Retry eventually works, including in a Nintendo Switch community report. Others report deleting local GameUserSettings.ini files or the Fortnite Saved folder, as discussed in this community thread. These are anecdotal, not dedicated fixes confirmed by Epic. They can reset local configuration, so back up files first and try them only after the official steps.
When to contact Epic Player Support
Contact Epic Player Support when the status page is operational but the error remains after cache, network, account, and PC verification checks—especially when it follows the Epic account across multiple devices or networks. Epic’s related cloud-download guidance says a corrupted settings file associated with the Epic account may require support intervention.
Include the exact error text, platform and operating-system version, Epic Account ID, date and time of each attempt, status-page result, networks tested, and every troubleshooting step already completed. Never send your password or authentication codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is “Failed to Download Supervised Settings” definitely a parental-controls error?
No. The wording can appear during an account-settings or connectivity failure. Parental controls matter when there are related permission messages or recent account changes, but the message alone does not prove that restrictions are blocking Fortnite.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I unlink my PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account?
No. Unlinking is not a routine fix and can create access or progression problems. Confirm the correct Epic account and complete missing account information instead.
Can I delete GameUserSettings.ini?
Only as an advanced, last-resort PC experiment after backing up the file. Community reports are anecdotal, and deleting it may reset local settings without repairing an Epic account-side problem.
How long should I wait during an Epic outage?
Wait until Epic’s status page reports that the relevant incident has recovered, then restart Fortnite and try again. There is no reliable universal recovery time.
