Roblox uses its own proprietary, internally developed game engine, commonly called the Roblox Engine. It is not built on Unity, Unreal Engine, or Godot. Roblox Studio is the editor built around that engine, while Luau is the Lua-derived scripting language creators use to build experiences.
Roblox uses a proprietary in-house engine
Unlike developers who license Unity or Unreal Engine to make a separate game, Roblox operates its own engine and platform as one integrated system. Roblox’s public technical and recruitment material refers to a “Roblox proprietary Game Engine.”
That engine works together with Roblox’s client, servers, cloud services, asset delivery, publishing tools, identity systems, moderation infrastructure, multiplayer services, and economy. This is why most Roblox experiences are published to and played through Roblox rather than exported as ordinary standalone applications.
Roblox’s broader platform is commonly described as having three major parts: the Roblox Client, Roblox Studio, and Roblox Cloud. The engine is the runtime technology connecting the creation and player sides of that platform.

Is Roblox made with Unity or Unreal Engine?
No. Roblox is not an experience made in Unity or Unreal, and Roblox Studio is not a Unity or Unreal editor with a Roblox-themed interface. Roblox’s engine, tools, runtime, and platform services are developed as part of Roblox’s own technology stack.
This does not mean Roblox has never used any third-party libraries or middleware anywhere in its technology. It means that the core engine and creator platform are not based on Unity, Unreal, or Godot in the way an independently developed game typically is.
Roblox Studio is the editor, not the whole engine
Roblox Studio is Roblox’s official desktop creation environment. It lets developers:
- Build and edit 3D scenes
- Import and organize assets
- Create interfaces and animations
- Write and test scripts
- Run playtests
- Configure and publish experiences
It is reasonable in casual conversation to call Studio a game engine because it is the application through which Roblox games are made. Technically, however, Studio is the editor and development environment; the Roblox Engine is the underlying runtime and technology that powers the experience.

Roblox states that Studio comes bundled with the engine that powers games in the Roblox app. The editor, player client, and server processes have different roles, but they belong to the same overall engine and platform family.
The core engine is substantially written in C++
The most accurate technical description is that Roblox’s core engine is implemented substantially in C++, with Luau used for creator-facing scripts and higher-level game logic. Roblox has described its engine as a combination of C++ and Lua-based code, with performance-sensitive operations handled in optimized native code.
That native layer is responsible for systems such as rendering, physics, memory management, networking, streaming, input, audio, animation, and platform integration. Roblox’s 2025 Tech Talks discussion of the Roblox Engine also covers C++ as a central native-engine environment.
So “Roblox is written in Lua” is an incomplete explanation. Creators write Luau scripts, but those scripts call engine APIs whose underlying work is performed by native engine systems and Roblox platform services.
What programming language does Roblox use?
The current answer is Luau. It is a scripting language developed by Roblox from the Lua 5.1 family and adapted for performance, safety, tooling, and Roblox development.

Roblox began using Lua 5.1 around 2006. Over time, the language evolved into Luau while retaining its Lua 5.1 design heritage and compatibility goals. The Luau project’s overview and its history of the language explain that progression.
Luau is used for gameplay logic, user interfaces, tools, plugins, and other creator-facing behavior. It is not the game engine itself: it is the scripting language and runtime layer exposed by the engine.

Roblox announced Luau as open source on November 3, 2021. That open-source status applies to Luau and its tooling; it does not mean that Roblox’s complete client, server engine, Studio application, or platform services are open source. See the Luau open-source announcement for the distinction.
What does the Roblox Engine provide?
A game engine is more than a graphics renderer. Roblox’s Engine API reference exposes a broad collection of classes, services, data types, events, callbacks, functions, and properties for building interactive experiences.
Depending on the feature, the engine and connected platform services handle:

A Luau script might request that an object move, play a sound, respond to input, or communicate with a server. The script provides the game-specific instructions; the engine and platform implement the underlying operation.

Broadly, yes. Roblox experiences can look and play very differently—role-playing games, simulators, shooters, racing games, social spaces, and educational projects—but creators do not normally choose a separate engine for each experience.
The usual workflow is:
- A creator builds the experience in Roblox Studio.
- The experience includes scene data, assets, configuration, and Luau scripts.
- Roblox publishes that content to its platform.
- The Roblox client and server systems load and execute it using Roblox’s engine and services.
“The same engine” should be understood as the same Roblox Engine technology and platform runtime. Client and server components have different responsibilities, so their implementations and available operations are not identical.

Roblox’s rendering technology has changed over time, and the exact graphics backend can vary by platform and engine version. A historical Roblox rendering-architecture presentation discusses an early G3D-based stage and later developments.
That historical reference should not be interpreted as the name of Roblox’s current complete engine. Nor should one renderer or graphics API be treated as synonymous with the entire Roblox Engine.

Roblox exposes rendering and lighting technologies through its engine APIs, including the options documented in its Technology enumeration. The safest general description is that Roblox has its own evolving rendering architecture with platform-specific backends. A universal claim that Roblox currently uses only OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan would be too broad without specifying the platform and version.
Can you use the Roblox Engine outside Roblox?
Not in the same way that you can download Unity, Unreal Engine, or Godot and use them to ship an unrelated standalone game. The Roblox Engine is a proprietary part of the Roblox platform, and Roblox experiences are generally created, published, and played within that ecosystem.
Luau is a separate matter: its language implementation and tooling are open source and can be used independently. That does not provide the Roblox Engine’s renderer, physics systems, Studio editor, multiplayer infrastructure, cloud services, or platform APIs.
Roblox engine terminology at a glance
| Component | What it is |
|---|---|
| Roblox Engine | Roblox’s proprietary runtime and engine technology |
| Roblox Studio | The editor and development environment used to create experiences |
| Luau | Roblox’s Lua-derived scripting language |
| Roblox Client | The player-facing application that runs experiences |
| Roblox Cloud and platform services | Online systems supporting publishing, multiplayer, storage, identity, assets, and related features |
Bottom line: Roblox uses a proprietary in-house Roblox Engine—not Unity, Unreal Engine, or Godot. Studio is the editor, Luau is the current scripting language, and the engine’s native core is substantially implemented in C++.
