Steam Deck control customization is handled through Steam Input on a per-game basis. Open a game from your Library, select the gamepad icon, choose its current layout, and edit buttons, sticks, triggers, trackpads, gyro, or rear grips. You can also make Deck controls send keyboard keys, mouse inputs, radial-menu commands, and multi-action shortcuts.

The exact labels can vary between SteamOS and Steam client versions, but the workflow remains broadly the same.

Open the Steam Deck controller configurator

  1. Open Library in Steam.
  2. Highlight the game you want to configure.
  3. Press A to open its details page.
  4. Select the gamepad/controller icon.
  5. Open the current layout or template.
  6. Choose Edit Layout, or the equivalent edit option shown by your client version.

Choose the control group you want to change, make the assignment, then apply or save it. Launch the game and test the change. You can also open the Steam Input configurator from the Steam overlay while a game is running; the overlay’s exact placement varies by client version.

For official guidance on the Library path and layout editor, see Steam Support’s Steam Deck controls guide.

What Steam Input can change

Steam Input is a translation layer between the physical controls you press and the input the game receives. A Deck button can send a normal gamepad command, a keyboard key, a mouse button, mouse movement, a radial-menu selection, or a native game action when the game provides Steam Input actions.

Valve’s Steam Input documentation identifies the main configurable sources as the left, right, and center trackpads; both sticks; ABXY buttons; the D-pad; triggers; gyro; and a broader Switch category containing controls such as shoulders, system buttons, and rear grips. The Deck itself has two clickable capacitive sticks, two haptic trackpads, four assignable rear grip buttons, and a six-axis IMU for motion controls. See the Steam Input concepts documentation and official Steam Deck specifications.

Remap ordinary buttons and triggers

For a straightforward remap, open the relevant button group, select the physical button, and choose its output. For example, you can:

  • Swap A and B to use a preferred control convention.
  • Move sprint, crouch, jump, reload, or interact to a more comfortable button.
  • Assign a keyboard key to a Deck button in a game with incomplete controller support.
  • Use a trigger or bumper for a command the game normally places somewhere inconvenient.

Save the change, then test it in a safe area of the game. A remap changes the input being sent; it does not necessarily change the game’s on-screen prompts. A button sending a keyboard key may cause keyboard prompts, while a gamepad output generally preserves controller prompts. That is a consequence of the output type, not necessarily a Steam Deck fault.

Use the four rear grip buttons

The four rear buttons are commonly identified as L4, L5, R4, and R5. They are useful for moving awkward actions away from stick clicks or face buttons:

  • Sprint or crouch
  • Jump or reload
  • Weapon swap
  • Map or inventory
  • Push-to-talk
  • A modifier that temporarily changes other controls

A rear grip can duplicate an existing gamepad action, such as L3, but it does not automatically create a new native action that the game understands. To add more complex functions, assign keyboard or mouse outputs, radial menus, action layers, or native Steam Input actions where the game supports them.

When experimenting, start with a non-destructive action. A poorly placed grip assignment can make it easy to trigger a command accidentally, particularly if it is assigned to an action layer or a long press.

Configure the sticks and stick clicks

Stick movement, stick clicks, capacitive touch, dead zones, and response curves are separate parts of the control scheme. Depending on the available options, you can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Change a stick from joystick output to mouse-like movement.
  • Adjust sensitivity, dead zones, or response curves.
  • Invert an axis where the layout exposes that option.
  • Move L3 or R3 actions to a rear grip.
  • Use stick touch as an activation condition or modifier.

Do not treat a dead-zone adjustment as a repair for physical stick drift. It may change how unwanted movement feels, but it does not fix worn or faulty hardware. To distinguish a configuration problem from a hardware problem, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs and watch the reported input.

Configure the trackpads

The two trackpads can be assigned several different input styles:

  • Mouse: cursor-like movement for keyboard-and-mouse games.
  • Joystick or Joystick Camera: analog-style movement for games expecting a controller.
  • D-pad: four directional inputs.
  • Button Pad: separate regions that act as buttons.
  • Radial menu: a circular selection of weapons, tools, spells, or commands.
  • Trackball-style behavior: continued movement after a swipe where supported by the selected mode.

Trackpad touch and trackpad click can perform different actions. For example, the right pad can provide camera movement while clicking it activates a separate command. The left pad can act as a D-pad for shortcuts, or open a radial menu for inventory and weapon selection.

“Mouse-like” and “joystick-like” are not interchangeable. Use mouse output when the game expects cursor movement, WASD, and mouse buttons. Use joystick-style output when the game has proper controller support and expects an analog camera or movement axis.

Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

Add gyro aiming

The Deck’s gyro is most useful as a precision supplement rather than a complete replacement for the stick. A practical setup is:

  1. Use the right stick for broad camera movement.
  2. Set the gyro to activate only while touching the right trackpad, holding a rear grip, or holding another chosen button.
  3. Set gyro output to mouse or joystick-style input according to what the game supports.
  4. Begin with low or moderate sensitivity and increase it gradually.
  5. Test both activation and deactivation so the camera does not move unexpectedly.

You can also use a mode shift to turn the right trackpad into a more precise aiming surface while a grip is held. If gyro aim drifts, check the activation condition, sensitivity, calibration, and whether the trackpad or stick is being touched unintentionally.

Valve recommends considering gyro together with joystick or trackpad aiming for camera and cursor control. Steam client updates can change which combinations are permitted, so a particular gyro or menu option may be unavailable in one client build. See Valve’s Steam Deck developer FAQ and Steam Deck client update notes.

Set up keyboard-and-mouse controls

Steam Input is especially useful for older PC games and titles designed primarily for keyboard and mouse. A sensible starting layout is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Deck control Suggested output
Left stick WASD or the game’s movement controls
Right trackpad Mouse movement
Right trigger Left mouse click
Left trigger Right mouse click
Bumpers Common actions or weapon changes
Rear grips Sprint, crouch, modifiers, or frequently used hotkeys
Radial menu Weapons, tools, inventory, or number keys

You can assign WASD, number keys, function keys, Escape, Tab, Enter, modifier combinations, mouse clicks, and mouse movement. However, mixing controller and keyboard/mouse signals can make a game switch prompt styles or duplicate an action. If a game supports controllers reliably, start with a gamepad-only layout. If it does not, use keyboard-and-mouse output consistently where possible.

Steam’s controller-style troubleshooting guidance explains that gamepad-only layouts depend on gamepad support, while flexible layouts can send keyboard, mouse, or gamepad commands.

Use templates, personal layouts, and native actions

These terms describe different starting points:

  • Template: a general-purpose configuration used as a starting point.
  • Personal layout: your customized version saved for the game.
  • Community layout: a configuration shared by another player.
  • Native Steam Input action layout: a game-specific configuration using named actions such as “Jump” or “Open Map” when the developer exposes them.

Native actions can be more meaningful than simply sending a physical key, but their availability depends on the game’s implementation. Steam Input configurations are associated with the selected game rather than acting as one universal remap for every title.

Use action layers, mode shifts, and activators

Advanced layouts let one physical control perform different jobs in different circumstances:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Activators define behavior on press, release, hold, double-press, or other conditions.
  • Mode shifts temporarily change one control while another button is held.
  • Action layers switch a group of controls to a second arrangement.
  • Radial and touch menus provide several commands from one surface.

Examples include holding L5 to turn the right trackpad into a precision-aiming surface, holding a grip to make face buttons issue weapon shortcuts, or using a long press for a secondary command while preserving a short press.

These features can become confusing if the same button activates a layer and is also assigned inside that layer. Change one feature at a time, save it, and test it before adding another condition.

Browse and adapt community layouts

From the game’s controller settings, select the current template or layout selector and open Community Layouts. Valve’s guide describes using the layout browser to find configurations shared by other players.

Before applying one, check:

  • Whether it targets gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse input.
  • Its description and recent activity.
  • Whether it assumes a particular control scheme or game version.
  • Whether it relies on native Steam Input actions or complicated layers.

Community layouts are starting points, not guaranteed fixes. A layout may work in gameplay but fail in menus, inventory, or a launcher. Apply one in a low-risk area, test every important control, and save a working personal copy before making further changes.

Save your layout without losing the original

  1. Begin with the current working layout rather than changing a random template.
  2. Make only one or two related changes.
  3. Apply or save the changes using the wording shown by your client version.
  4. Test the game, including menus and non-combat areas.
  5. Once it works, save a named personal copy.
  6. Keep the original or default layout available as a fallback.

If a layout becomes unusable, return to the gamepad settings and restore the default/original layout, or apply a known-good community layout. The exact reset and save labels can change between Steam client versions.

Test a new layout systematically

A reliable test prevents a small remap from breaking a less frequently used function:

  1. Test face buttons in a safe menu.
  2. Test both sticks and both stick clicks.
  3. Test triggers at partial and full travel.
  4. Press each rear grip separately.
  5. Test trackpad touch separately from trackpad click.
  6. Activate and deactivate gyro.
  7. Test the layout during normal gameplay.
  8. Check inventory, map, pause, and other menus.
  9. Return to the game after opening the Steam overlay or resuming from sleep.
  10. Confirm that no input is duplicated, stuck, or unexpectedly activating a layer.

Fix controls that do not work

The game ignores the layout

  1. Confirm the game was launched through Steam.
  2. Reopen its controller settings and verify that the edited layout is active.
  3. Try a known-good community layout.
  4. Use gamepad-only output for a game with controller support.
  5. Use keyboard-and-mouse output for a game without usable controller support.
  6. Restart Steam and the game.
  7. Disconnect other controllers and test again.

External launchers, a non-working Steam overlay, incompatible output types, or a game switching between controller and keyboard modes can all interfere. For non-Steam games, add the program to Steam first if you want Steam Input and the overlay to manage it. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance covers overlay, external-launcher, and controller-configuration issues.

The back buttons do nothing

Check that the grip has an assignment in the active layout, rather than only inside an inactive action layer. Verify whether its action requires holding another button, and confirm that the chosen output type is supported by the game. Run Steam’s controller input test before assuming the hardware is defective.

The trackpad moves the cursor but the game does not respond

The trackpad may be sending mouse movement to a game expecting a joystick, or joystick input to a game expecting a mouse. Try Mouse for keyboard-and-mouse games, Joystick Camera for controller-oriented games, or D-pad/Button Pad mode for menus and shortcuts. Also test the trackpad’s click assignment and sensitivity.

Gyro activates unexpectedly or drifts

Check the activation condition, output type, sensitivity, calibration, and whether your hand is touching the assigned trackpad or stick. Some current client builds also restrict incompatible gyro and menu combinations.

The game shows the wrong prompts

This usually means the game is receiving a different input class than the one represented by its normal prompts. A keyboard key can activate an action while the game displays keyboard icons, even though the physical input came from a Deck button. Choose between prompt consistency and access to commands the game does not expose through its controller layout.

Choose a starting layout by game type

Game situation Good starting point Trade-off
Modern controller-supported game Gamepad layout Best compatibility and prompts, but fewer keyboard-only commands.
First-person game Stick plus gyro or trackpad aiming Requires sensitivity tuning.
Older PC game Keyboard and mouse, often with a radial menu More setup and possible keyboard prompts.
Strategy or simulation game Trackpad, radial menu, and keyboard bindings Powerful but more complex.
MMO or hotkey-heavy game Rear grips, trackpad menus, and modifiers Requires careful layer planning.
Game with an active community Recent community layout, then personalize it May reflect different preferences or an outdated version.

Useful Steam Deck shortcuts

Steam + X opens the on-screen keyboard. Holding the Steam button displays available shortcut combinations. These shortcuts are useful while entering bindings, troubleshooting an overlay, or using a keyboard-heavy game. Valve documents them in its Steam Deck support guide.
