If GeForce Experience shows a black sign-in panel, loops back to Log in, or reports “Unable to connect to NVIDIA,” the quickest current solution is usually to install the NVIDIA App rather than spend time repairing the older application. NVIDIA is directing remaining GeForce Experience users to migrate and says critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off in the near future.
If Windows and your games otherwise work, the symptom most likely involves the embedded authentication window, account, network, or application installation—not a dead graphics card. If you only need a driver, you can bypass the login entirely with NVIDIA’s manual driver download page.
First, identify which black screen you have
“Black screen” can describe several unrelated problems. Use the matching row before changing drivers or hardware:
| What you see | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Only the login panel is black or empty | Embedded web authentication, network filtering, account, or an aging GeForce Experience component | Test NVIDIA login in a browser, then migrate to the NVIDIA App |
| The entire GeForce Experience window is black | Application installation, NVIDIA process, rendering, or security-software interference | Restart Windows and NVIDIA processes; install the NVIDIA App |
| The screen turns black after starting a game or enabling the overlay | Overlay, driver, display output, or game-rendering issue | Disable the overlay and follow display/driver troubleshooting |
| The screen is black during startup or before Windows loads | Cable, monitor, firmware, graphics output, or Windows display problem | Use the separate display troubleshooting branch below |
| GeForce NOW cannot sign in | A separate cloud-gaming product | Use GeForce NOW support and requirements |
Fastest fix: move to the NVIDIA App
NVIDIA now recommends that remaining GeForce Experience users upgrade to the NVIDIA App. This matters especially when login is broken: even if you repair the old authentication workflow, NVIDIA says its critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off in the near future. No specific shutdown date is given in the migration notice.

- Close GeForce Experience.
- Download the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official download page.
- Install it and restart Windows if requested.
- Sign in with your NVIDIA account.
- Confirm that the GPU and installed driver are detected.
- Re-enable any overlay, recording, game-optimization, or notification settings you use.
The NVIDIA App covers major GeForce Experience functions, including driver updates, game settings, overlay features, ShadowPlay-related functions, and related NVIDIA applications. Feature availability is not identical in every case: supported features can vary by GPU, game, operating system, and application version. Check NVIDIA’s supported games and applications list when a particular feature is missing.
Test the account before troubleshooting the PC
- Open NVIDIA’s account sign-in page in a normal browser.
- If it fails, try a private/incognito window and use password reset or account recovery if necessary.
- If practical, test a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
Interpret the results like this:
- Browser login works, but the app does not: the problem is more likely the embedded browser, a local service, the installation, or security software.
- Browser login also fails: investigate the password, verification, account, regional access, or a possible NVIDIA service issue. Do not repeatedly reinstall the display driver.
- A hotspot works but your home network does not: suspect DNS filtering, router controls, VPN, proxy, ISP filtering, or firewall rules.
- Neither browser nor app works on multiple networks: contact NVIDIA consumer support rather than continuing an endless reinstall cycle.
Remove common network and security blockers temporarily
For a controlled test, disconnect any VPN and turn off a manually configured proxy. Also temporarily pause third-party web filtering, HTTPS inspection, DNS filtering, or firewall software if your security policy allows it. Antivirus and endpoint-security products can block NVIDIA Web Helper components or NVIDIA services.
Re-enable protection immediately after the test. Do not leave antivirus, firewall, HTTPS inspection, or other security controls disabled. On a work or school computer, do not bypass organizational controls; ask the administrator to check proxy authentication, TLS inspection, allowlists, and restricted services.
Correct Windows date and time
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Enable automatic time and, where appropriate, automatic time-zone detection.
- Use the option to synchronize the clock.
- Restart GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App.
An incorrect clock can invalidate HTTPS certificates and sign-in tokens. It is a possible cause of authentication failure, not a confirmed explanation for every black login window.
Restart NVIDIA services and processes
NVIDIA’s installer troubleshooting guidance recommends stopping NVIDIA services and ensuring that NVIDIA application processes are no longer running before resetting an installation. Service names differ by driver and application version.
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Stop NVIDIA services whose names begin with NVIDIA. Common examples include NVIDIA Display Container LS and NVIDIA LocalSystem Container.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Close remaining NVIDIA application processes, if present.
- Relaunch the application. If it still fails, restart Windows before reinstalling.
Stop or start services for this diagnostic only. Do not change service startup types indiscriminately, edit the registry, delete service definitions, or remove NVIDIA DLLs.

Reinstall the NVIDIA App cleanly if migration fails
Use NVIDIA’s supported installer-reset sequence:
- Reboot Windows.
- Uninstall the existing NVIDIA App or related NVIDIA application if it appears in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Reboot again.
- Open
services.mscand stop NVIDIA services. - Close remaining NVIDIA processes in Task Manager.
- Download the installer again from NVIDIA and retry, using an administrator account when required.
- If installation still fails, record the exact error and contact NVIDIA support.
A clean application reinstall can remove corrupted application state, but it is not guaranteed to fix an account or NVIDIA-side service problem. Avoid unofficial “old GeForce Experience” download sites: obsolete installers may contain authentication components that no longer work and can introduce application or driver conflicts.
Optional network reset
If browser access and the hotspot test point to a local Windows networking problem, run these commands in Command Prompt as administrator:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
Restart Windows afterward. The first command clears the DNS resolver cache. The second resets the Winsock catalog and may affect software that installs network filters, so treat this as a reversible diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix for the login symptom.
Advanced check: a deliberately modified hosts file
Only investigate this if you knowingly use privacy software or previously edited the hosts file. A custom entry blocking NVIDIA domains can cause connection failures, although this is a community-reported possibility rather than a universal NVIDIA-confirmed cause.
- Back up
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts. - Open the file with administrator rights.
- Look for intentionally added NVIDIA-domain blocks.
- Do not delete standard Windows entries.
- Restore the backup if the test does not help.
Install NVIDIA drivers without logging in
You do not need to repair GeForce Experience or sign in to install a graphics driver. Open NVIDIA’s manual driver page, select your GPU and Windows version, and choose the appropriate package.
- Game Ready Driver: the usual choice for a gaming-first PC.
- Studio Driver: intended for users who prioritize reliability in supported creative applications.
For laptops, check the manufacturer’s driver page too. An OEM package can be preferable for display switching, power management, hybrid graphics, and Optimus behavior. Manual installation bypasses application authentication; it does not repair the NVIDIA account or restore every NVIDIA App feature.

If Windows itself is really black
Do not start with account troubleshooting if the monitor is black before the application opens or before Windows loads.
- Check monitor power, cable connections, input source, and another display output.
- Test with one monitor only and remove docks or adapters temporarily.
- If the screen goes black after the Windows logo, test Windows Safe Mode or a clean boot.
- If Safe Mode restores the display, investigate the NVIDIA driver, overlay, startup programs, or display configuration.
- For boot and display-specific steps, follow NVIDIA’s black-screen guidance and Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting.
On a laptop, external monitor, dock, integrated-GPU switching, and OEM display drivers can change the diagnosis. If the display works only with the generic driver or in Safe Mode, treat it as a graphics/display problem rather than a login problem.
What common errors usually indicate
“Unable to connect to NVIDIA”
First compare application login with browser login, then test without VPN, proxy, DNS filtering, and third-party firewall inspection. If browser login fails across networks, focus on account recovery, service availability, or NVIDIA support.
“There was a problem”
This is too generic to identify one cause. Restart Windows, check the clock, stop conflicting NVIDIA processes, and migrate to the NVIDIA App. Capture the full message or code before contacting support.

A loop can result from a failed embedded session, blocked cookies or web traffic, an invalid token, or an outdated application path. Test a private browser window, remove VPN/proxy interference, and use the NVIDIA App rather than repeatedly reinstalling GeForce Experience.
Blank embedded login window
If the rest of Windows is normal, treat this as an embedded authentication or application problem first. User reports describe similar blank windows, but they do not establish one universal cause.

Escalate to NVIDIA through its consumer support options when:
- Browser login fails on multiple networks.
- The official NVIDIA App installer still fails after rebooting, uninstalling the previous application, stopping NVIDIA services, and closing NVIDIA processes.
- Windows has broader black-screen or display failures.
- The PC is managed by a school or employer.
- Device Manager does not detect the GPU or NVIDIA’s driver installer cannot identify it.
Include the exact application name, Windows edition and build, GPU model, laptop or desktop status, driver version, exact error text or code, whether browser login works, whether a hotspot works, and whether Safe Mode or a clean boot changes the behavior. Provide logs if NVIDIA support requests them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an NVIDIA GPU without GeForce Experience?
Yes. Install drivers manually from NVIDIA’s official driver page. You will not need to repair the application login first.
Is GeForce Experience discontinued?
Do not treat that as a precise shutdown statement. NVIDIA is directing remaining users to the NVIDIA App and says critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off in the near future, without publishing a specific date in the cited notice.
Does the NVIDIA App require an NVIDIA account?
Account requirements can depend on the feature and application flow. If sign-in fails, install the driver manually as a no-login fallback.

Will uninstalling GeForce Experience remove my graphics driver?
Uninstalling the application is separate from uninstalling the display driver, but review the items shown in Windows Apps before confirming.
Is GeForce NOW the same as GeForce Experience?
No. GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud-gaming service; GeForce Experience and the NVIDIA App are local Windows companion applications.
Should I download an old GeForce Experience version?
No, not as a normal fix. Unofficial archived installers may use obsolete authentication components and can create conflicts. Prefer the official NVIDIA App.
Does a VPN cause the black login screen?
It can interfere with embedded authentication, but it is only one possibility. Disconnect it briefly for a controlled test and re-enable it afterward.
