Phasmophobia multiplayer lag is not always an internet problem. It can mean low FPS, visual stutter, rubber-banding, lobby timeouts, or a voice-server failure. Identify the symptom first, then use the matching fix: graphics and drivers for frame-rate problems; Ethernet, host testing, and firewall checks for rubber-banding; and Steam, router, and network tests for connection failures.
This guide applies primarily to the Windows PC Steam version, including desktop and VR players.
First, identify what “lag” means
Before reinstalling the game or changing router settings, determine whether the problem is rendering, networking, matchmaking, or voice chat.
| What you see | Most likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS, screen hitching, or jerky camera movement | Graphics, drivers, CPU/GPU load, thermals, or background software | Lower graphics settings and cap FPS |
| Players or ghosts teleport, objects snap back, or movement is delayed | Network or synchronization problem | Test Ethernet and another host |
| Only multiplayer stutters while single-player is smooth | Multiplayer performance, voice software, host, or network issue | Compare another lobby and host |
| Stuck on “Connecting” or unable to join | Lobby, firewall, Steam, NAT, or restricted-network problem | Restart Steam, the PC, and router |
| Kicked with a timeout | Unstable or restricted connection | Use Ethernet and test another network |
| Gameplay works but voice does not | Voice server, clock, firewall, or microphone configuration | Sync Windows time and check microphone settings |
Also note where the problem occurs: the main menu, loading screen, contract, single-player, or multiplayer. Ask whether every player sees it or only one, whether Discord and other games work normally, and whether it began after a Phasmophobia update, GPU-driver update, Windows update, or hardware change.

- Dripping horror text inspired by paranormal themes for spooky seasonal appeal
- Bold high-contrast lettering that stands out on dark backgrounds at night events
- 16” x 16” bag with two 14” long and 1” wide black cotton webbing strap handles.
- Made of a lightweight, spun polyester canvas-like fabric.
- All seams and stress points are double-stitched for durability, and the reinforced bottom flattens to fit more items and hold larger objects.
Fast fixes to try first
- Exit Phasmophobia completely. Then exit and relaunch Steam.
- Restart the PC.
- Restart the modem or router. Wait for the connection to return before joining the lobby.
- Pause downloads and synchronization. Stop Steam downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and large updates while testing.
- Use Ethernet if possible. A direct cable connection is a better diagnostic than congested or unstable Wi-Fi.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Remove obsolete DirectX 10 launch options.
Kinetic Games recommends restarting the router, Steam, and PC for disconnection problems and recommends wired Ethernet where possible. See its official disconnection troubleshooting guide.
Fix low FPS and visual stuttering
Lower settings and test an FPS cap
If the game looks jerky but players are not teleporting or snapping backward, treat the problem as a performance issue first.
- Open Phasmophobia’s graphics settings.
- Temporarily select low settings.
- Cap the frame rate at 60 FPS or lower.
- Test with V-Sync enabled.
- Test again with V-Sync disabled.
- Increase settings one at a time after the stutter is isolated.
Lowering settings can reduce frame-time spikes, but it cannot repair packet loss or an unstable route to the host. If an FPS counter falls while the connection remains responsive, focus on performance rather than ping.
Update or clean-install the GPU driver
Install the current driver from the manufacturer of your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU, then restart Windows. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver may be more useful than assuming the newest release is best.
Use a clean installation when a normal update does not help or driver corruption is suspected. Do not treat any particular driver version as permanently correct; driver releases change over time. Kinetic’s PC performance guide includes manufacturer-specific driver instructions.
Check VR, background software, and thermals
VR can impose substantially different GPU and CPU demands from desktop mode. Temporarily disconnect unnecessary VR hardware or controllers and compare VR with non-VR play if both modes are available.
Close unnecessary background applications, overlays, recording tools, and hardware-monitoring utilities during the test. Check whether the CPU or GPU is overheating or reducing its clock speed under load. Low disk space, pending Windows updates, or activity from antivirus and cloud-sync software can also produce intermittent stutter.

Multiplayer may add player interactions, synchronization, voice chat, voice recognition, equipment, cameras, lights, and effects. That does not prove one universal multiplayer performance bug, but it explains why a system that is smooth in a quiet single-player session may show a performance problem in a full lobby.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify Phasmophobia’s Steam files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Phasmophobia.
- Select Properties.
- Open Local Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart the game.
Steam may reacquire missing or damaged files. The wording or location of the verification control can vary slightly between Steam client versions. Verification is less disruptive than a full reinstall and should come first unless support specifically requests otherwise.
Remove obsolete DirectX 10 launch options
Kinetic Games says DirectX 10 is no longer supported. Do not add random DirectX commands copied from unrelated games.
- Right-click Phasmophobia in Steam.
- Select Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Inspect Launch Options.
- Delete any DirectX 10 command or other unexplained option.
- Restart Steam or the game and test again.
Fix rubber-banding and multiplayer network lag
Test whether the host is involved
This is a practical diagnostic test rather than a published rule about Phasmophobia’s networking:
- Have the affected player join a friend’s lobby.
- Have that friend host a separate contract.
- Compare the result with the original lobby.
- If only one host produces the problem, that host’s connection, firewall, NAT, or route is more suspect.
- If the same player has trouble with every host, investigate that player’s PC, network, drivers, installation, or local security software.
- If everyone lags in one lobby, have the host test Ethernet, restart the router, check firewall permissions, and try another host.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet and test the same lobby. Avoid drawing conclusions from a busy 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Pause downloads and streaming during the comparison.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If Ethernet makes no difference, continue with host and alternate-network testing.
Test another network
Briefly test with a phone hotspot or another connection if the problem persists. This is especially useful on college, university, corporate, managed, or parental-control networks.

- Dripping horror text inspired by paranormal themes for spooky seasonal appeal
- Bold high-contrast lettering that stands out on dark backgrounds at night events
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Works on a hotspot but not home internet: suspect the router, ISP, NAT, firewall, DNS, or network policy.
- Fails on every network: suspect the local PC, Steam, files, drivers, or a game-side issue.
- Only one friend’s lobby fails: suspect a host-side or route-specific problem.
Kinetic recommends trying another network when disconnections continue. A VPN is not a general gaming fix: it can occasionally change a poor route, but it can also add latency. Port forwarding may help some restricted networks, but it is not required for every player and should not be the first step.
Check firewall and antivirus permissions
For joining failures, timeouts, and some voice errors, create an application exception rather than permanently disabling protection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Defender Firewall.
- Select Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Allow Phasmophobia on the relevant network profiles.
- If it is absent, choose Allow another app and browse to the executable in your actual Steam library.
- Restart Phasmophobia and test again.
Third-party antivirus products may have their own application-control settings. Restore protection after any temporary diagnostic test. Do not copy an executable path from another PC; Steam libraries can be installed on different drives.
Fix “Connecting,” lobby failures, and timeouts
Use connection troubleshooting rather than graphics fixes when you are stuck joining, kicked from a lobby, or receiving a timeout.
- Exit Phasmophobia and Steam.
- Restart the router and wait for it to reconnect.
- Restart the PC.
- Launch Steam again and test the lobby.
- Try Ethernet.
- Check the firewall exception.
- Test another host and, if possible, another network.
Managed networks may block or restrict traffic required by online games. If another network works, contact the network administrator or ISP rather than repeatedly reinstalling Phasmophobia.
Kinetic has published fixes for specific historical lobby and performance issues, including players becoming stuck on the “Connecting” screen through friend invites and reduced performance associated with CCTV. Those fixes do not mean every current connection failure has the same cause. Check the official Steam announcements and Kinetic’s patch notes for confirmed update-specific issues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Synchronize Windows’ clock
- Open Windows Date & Time settings.
- Enable automatic time if appropriate.
- Select Sync now.
- Restart Phasmophobia.
Kinetic says an out-of-sync system clock can interfere with secure voice-server communication. This does not normally fix low FPS or network rubber-banding.
Match the microphone selections
Confirm that the default microphone in Windows is the same microphone selected in Phasmophobia’s voice settings. Kinetic’s Steam hotfix notes specifically call out this mismatch for voice-recognition problems on the PC Voice setting.
Also check microphone permissions, mute controls, firewall access, and whether the error is voice-only or accompanied by an actual disconnect.
Check your PC against the published requirements
Steam currently lists these published Windows PC requirements:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Intel Core i5-10600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Not separately specified |
| GPU | NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 390 | NVIDIA RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 21 GB available | 21 GB available |
| Network | Broadband internet connection | Broadband internet connection |
Steam notes that the minimum specifications are intended for VR and that lower specifications may work for non-VR. Meeting the minimum or recommended requirements does not guarantee smooth multiplayer performance; resolution, VR use, settings, thermals, drivers, background load, and network quality still matter. See the Phasmophobia Steam page for the current requirements.

Check for Citrix conflicts
If Citrix Workspace or Citrix Receiver is installed, Kinetic lists removing it as a possible troubleshooting action where a software conflict is suspected. Do not remove workplace software without understanding the effect on your work or consulting your administrator.
Repair UnityPlayer.dll through Steam
Kinetic lists rebuilding UnityPlayer.dll by deleting that file from the Phasmophobia installation folder and then verifying the files through Steam. Only do this with the game and Steam processes closed, and do not delete save files or unrelated files. Verification should restore the required game file.
Use Windows Network Reset last
- Open Network and Internet Settings.
- Select Advanced Network Settings.
- Choose Network Reset.
- Select Reset Now.
- Restart the PC.
Network Reset can remove or reset adapters, saved Wi-Fi information, VPN connections, and related configuration. It is therefore a later step, not the first response to a single-game problem.
What to do after a Phasmophobia update
A problem that begins immediately after an update is useful evidence, but it does not prove the update caused every player’s issue. Community reports of post-update multiplayer stutter are anecdotal and do not establish a universal bug or one guaranteed fix.
After an update:
- Check Kinetic’s official announcements and patch notes.
- Verify Steam files.
- Check GPU drivers and Windows updates.
- Compare single-player with multiplayer.
- Test another host and network.
- Record the exact error and when it started.
Kinetic’s 2026 announcements describe continuing stability, bug-fix, and playability work. Official notes have also documented specific fixes for Steam voice recognition, integrated-graphics crashes on a particular map, lobby connection behavior, and CCTV-related performance. These are confirmed individual fixes, not proof that every current lag report is server-side.
When to contact Phasmophobia Support
Contact Kinetic through the official support portal when the problem persists across hosts and networks or continues after local files, drivers, firewall permissions, and connection tests have been checked.
Include:
- Windows version.
- CPU, GPU, and RAM.
- Desktop or VR mode.
- Steam version or other PC distribution, if applicable.
- Whether single-player works.
- Whether every host is affected.
- Exact error text.
- The date the issue began.
- Recent game, GPU-driver, or Windows updates.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, hotspot, school/work, or other network type.
- Logs or diagnostic files if official support requests them.
Do not claim the issue is definitively “server-side” without official confirmation or strong evidence across independent players. The most useful report describes what changed between tests and which conditions consistently reproduce the problem.
