Yes—you can install and run PC games from a microSD card on the ASUS ROG Ally and ROG Ally X. The most reliable setup is to back up the card, format it as NTFS, create a games folder, and then add that folder separately in each launcher. ASUS’s current guidance also covers the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, although their full-screen Xbox interface may use different labels.

What you need

  • An ASUS ROG Ally or ROG Ally X running Windows 11.
  • A reputable microSD card. The Ally’s reader supports UHS-II cards and is backward-compatible with slower cards.
  • A backup location if the card already contains files.
  • Enough free space for the game, updates, and temporary installation files.

UHS-I cards are usually the capacity-and-value choice. UHS-II cards can offer higher transfer performance, but they may cost more or provide less capacity. Neither interface guarantees a specific loading time or frame rate. Buy from a reputable seller and avoid suspiciously cheap or unbranded cards.

ASUS confirms that games can be installed to the Ally’s microSD storage. See the ROG Ally FAQ and ASUS’s launcher-specific installation guide.

Quick setup

  1. Back up anything important on the microSD card.
  2. Insert the card into the Ally.
  3. Format it as NTFS.
  4. Create a folder such as D:Games.
  5. Add that folder in your game launcher.
  6. Install a small game first to test the setup.

1. Insert and identify the microSD card

Insert the microSD card into the Ally’s card reader. Open Windows desktop mode if necessary, then open File Explorer and select This PC. The card may appear as D:, E:, or another drive letter. Do not assume that it will always be D:.

  • Fast transfer speeds for quick loading time with up to 205MB/s read
  • Improved write speeds of up to 140MB/s for quicker downloads
  • Store more videos, movies, games, music, and your favorite content with large capacity up to 1TB
  • Quickly capture, play back and transfer Full-HD and 4K video

2. Format the card as NTFS

Formatting erases the card. Copy photos, documents, ROMs, or existing game files to another drive before continuing. Also confirm that you have selected the microSD card rather than the Ally’s internal SSD.

Format it on the ROG Ally

  1. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  2. Press and hold, or right-click, the microSD drive.
  3. Select Format.
  4. Set File system to NTFS.
  5. Confirm the correct drive, then select Start.
  6. After formatting finishes, open the card and create a folder named Games.

This is the Windows 11 procedure described by SanDisk’s ROG Ally formatting guide. ASUS’s current guide likewise recommends NTFS for this setup.

Format it on another Windows PC

You can instead insert the card into a laptop or desktop, locate it in File Explorer, right-click the volume, choose Format, select NTFS, and format it there. Move the card back to the Ally when finished.

NTFS is the current ASUS recommendation for the Ally installation workflow. That does not mean NTFS is the best filesystem for every other handheld or device; check the requirements of any device in which you also plan to use the card.

  • Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB

3. Create a games folder

A simple folder such as D:Games is easiest to manage. You can also use separate folders such as:

D:SteamLibrary
D:Epic Games
D:XboxGames

Some launchers create their own required subfolders. Do not manually rename or move those folders afterward unless the launcher supports it.

4. Choose the microSD location in your launcher

Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  3. Open Steam Library Folders.
  4. Select the plus (+) button.
  5. Select the microSD volume and add or create a Steam library folder.
  6. When installing a game, select that library as the installation location.

Creating a folder in File Explorer is not enough; Steam must be told to use it through its storage settings. Steam’s exact labels may change as the desktop client is updated.

Xbox app and PC Game Pass

  1. Start installing the game.
  2. At Choose a drive, select the microSD drive.
  3. Choose Choose a folder for your games on (D:), replacing D: with the actual drive letter if necessary.
  4. Create or select the games folder and confirm.

The Xbox app may require its own folder structure or permissions. If it says the drive is unsuitable, check the drive and filesystem before formatting again.

GOG Galaxy

  2. Use the Install To dropdown.
  3. Select Browse.
  4. Choose the microSD folder and continue.

5. Move existing games

Use the launcher’s built-in move or storage-management feature rather than dragging an installed game folder manually. In Steam, add the microSD library first, then use the game’s storage or management controls to move it.

If a moved game is not recognized, add the destination library again and use the launcher’s discovery, verification, or repair function. Manual folder moves can break shortcuts, manifests, permissions, or launcher paths.

6. Test the card before moving your whole library

Install a small game first. This checks that the card is mounted, the launcher can write to it, the folder permissions work, and the drive remains stable during sustained writes.

Keep the card inserted while playing. Leave free space for patches and temporary files. Use the internal SSD for games that stream assets heavily or show unusually long loading times, stutter, or installation errors from removable storage. Games vary considerably; microSD installation is supported, but performance will not necessarily match the internal NVMe SSD.

Armoury Crate and games on the card

ASUS says games downloaded through supported launchers can be imported into the Armoury Crate SE Game Library. Armoury Crate does not replace the launcher’s installation settings, however. Steam, Xbox, Epic, and other stores must still be configured separately.

A game may not appear immediately. Refresh or rescan the library, correct the executable path if needed, and make sure the card is inserted and mounted. Armoury Crate recognizing a game does not verify that its files are healthy.

Troubleshooting

The microSD card does not appear in File Explorer

  1. Shut down the Ally fully, then remove and reinsert the card.
  2. Check Disk Management to see whether Windows detects the card.
  3. Check whether the card has a drive letter.
  4. Test it in another computer or reader.
  5. Test a known-good card in the Ally.

If Windows asks you to format the card, stop first if it contains important data. If the card is absent from Disk Management on multiple devices, the problem may be a failing or counterfeit card rather than its filesystem.

The card appears but has no drive letter

Open Disk Management, identify the correct removable volume, and assign it a drive letter if Windows has not done so. Confirm the volume carefully before changing anything; selecting the wrong disk can cause data loss.

Steam only shows the C: drive

  1. Confirm the card appears in File Explorer and is formatted as NTFS.
  2. Assign a stable drive letter if necessary.
  3. Open Steam’s storage or library settings.
  4. Add the microSD as a new library location.
  5. Restart Steam and try a small test installation.

Xbox refuses to install to the card

Confirm that the card is NTFS, the Xbox app sees the correct drive, and the selected folder is genuinely on the card rather than a shortcut or mounted path. Check for intermittent disconnections and update Windows and the Xbox app. The documented Xbox flow is Choose a drive, followed by Choose a folder for your games on (D:) or the equivalent drive letter.

A game installs but will not launch

  1. Use the launcher’s verify, repair, or file-check function.
  2. Restart the Ally and reinsert the card.
  3. Confirm that the launcher still points to the correct drive letter.
  4. Test the game from the internal SSD.
  5. Reinstall only if verification and path correction fail.

If the game works from the SSD but not the card, that is a storage compatibility or performance clue—not proof that every microSD installation is defective.

The game disappears from Armoury Crate

Open the original launcher to confirm that the game is still installed, then refresh Armoury Crate’s library or re-add the executable if the path changed. The card must be inserted and mounted before Armoury Crate can launch games stored on it.

The card becomes corrupted

Stop writing to it and copy recoverable files elsewhere. Test it with another reader or computer, then use Windows error checking only after important data is backed up. Replace the card if errors return. Reformatting as NTFS can recreate the filesystem, but it cannot repair failing hardware or counterfeit media.

microSD versus the internal SSD

Use the microSD for Prefer the internal SSD for
Extra capacity, older games, indie games, emulators, and libraries where capacity matters most Demanding games, frequent asset streaming, or games that stutter or load poorly from removable storage
Separate removable game libraries Important installations where maximum consistency matters

A microSD card is the easiest way to expand capacity without opening the Ally, but it is removable storage and introduces another possible failure point. A portable USB-C SSD or internal SSD upgrade may be a better solution if you repeatedly run into performance or reliability problems.
