The easiest way to charge an original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch Lite is to use Nintendo’s HAC-002 AC Adapter. Connect it directly to the console or to a powered dock. To charge detachable Joy-Con, attach them to a Switch or OLED console, or use a separate Joy-Con Charging Grip or Charging Stand when they are detached.

These instructions apply to the original Nintendo Switch family—not Nintendo Switch 2, which uses different Joy-Con 2 controllers and charging hardware.

First, identify your Switch model

Model What matters for charging
Nintendo Switch Has detachable Joy-Con and works with the original Switch dock.
Nintendo Switch OLED Model Has detachable Joy-Con and uses the same original Switch charging method. Its dock includes a LAN port.
Nintendo Switch Lite Has built-in controls and no Joy-Con rails. Detached Joy-Con require a separate Charging Grip or Charging Stand.
Nintendo Switch 2 Uses different Joy-Con 2 controllers, accessories, and power equipment. Do not apply these HAC-002 instructions without checking Nintendo’s Switch 2 documentation.

What you need

For the original Switch family, Nintendo identifies the Nintendo Switch AC Adapter, model HAC-002, for charging the console and compatible charging accessories. Use that adapter, or another charger explicitly documented as compatible with your exact Switch model. A USB-C connector by itself does not guarantee that an adapter is suitable.

Do not use damaged adapters or cables. Keep charging equipment away from liquid, and do not handle connected equipment during a thunderstorm. See Nintendo’s Switch safety information for additional precautions.

Charge the Switch directly

Direct charging is usually the simplest option when you are playing in handheld mode and do not need the TV.

  1. Find the USB-C charging port on the bottom of the console.
  2. Plug the USB-C connector from the HAC-002 AC Adapter into the console.
  3. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  4. Leave the console powered on, in Sleep Mode, or powered off.

Nintendo estimates approximately three hours for a full console charge when the system is powered off or in Sleep Mode. Charging can take longer while you are actively playing. See Nintendo’s console charging instructions.

Charge the Switch in its dock

  1. Connect the HAC-002 adapter to the dock port labeled AC Adapter.
  2. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  3. Insert the Switch into the dock with the screen facing the dock’s front panel.
  4. Check the console’s battery status to confirm that charging has started.

Dock charging is convenient when the console is stored near a television. The dock’s USB ports can also power accessories such as a Joy-Con Charging Grip, but the dock must itself be connected to the AC adapter. A dock is not compatible with the Switch Lite; the Lite should be charged directly with its AC adapter.

Charge Joy-Con while attached to a Switch or OLED console

When Joy-Con are attached to a standard Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED Model, they can charge from the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Slide the left and right Joy-Con onto the corresponding console rails until they are fully seated.
  2. Connect the console to the HAC-002 adapter directly or place it in a powered dock.
  3. Keep the console powered on or in Sleep Mode.
  4. Open HOME Menu → Controllers and check the battery indicators.

The console and Joy-Con have separate batteries. Simply attaching the controllers to a console that is not receiving AC power is not the intended charging method. Nintendo estimates approximately 3.5 hours for a full Joy-Con charge, although actual time varies with battery condition, temperature, and use.

The included Joy-Con Grip does not charge

This is the most common source of confusion:

  • Joy-Con Grip HAC-011: The standard grip included with many Switch packages combines two Joy-Con into one controller, but it has no charging function.
  • Joy-Con Charging Grip HAC-012: The separately sold charging version has a charging connection and can recharge both Joy-Con while you use them as one controller.

To charge with the HAC-012, attach both Joy-Con to the Charging Grip and connect it by USB cable to a powered Switch dock or directly to the HAC-002 adapter. Nintendo says the Charging Grip’s recharge LED is lit while charging and turns off when charging is complete. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con Charging Grip support page.

Charge Joy-Con with a Switch Lite

A Switch Lite cannot charge Joy-Con directly because it has no detachable Joy-Con rails. It also cannot be placed in a Switch dock.

Use a Joy-Con Charging Grip, Joy-Con Charging Stand, or another accessory specifically designed for original Joy-Con:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Attach both Joy-Con to the Charging Grip or Charging Stand.
  2. Connect the accessory to the HAC-002 AC Adapter.
  3. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  4. Check the accessory’s charging indicator. Where applicable, pair the controllers with a Switch system to view their battery status.

Nintendo lists a Charging Grip or Charging Stand as the appropriate solution for charging Joy-Con when using a Switch Lite.

How to confirm that charging is working

  1. Open HOME Menu → Controllers.
  2. Look below the console and each connected controller.
  3. Check for the battery icon and charging indicator.
  4. If using a Charging Grip, check its recharge LED.

The Controllers screen displays approximate battery levels for the console and connected controllers. LED behavior can differ on third-party accessories, so consult the accessory’s instructions rather than assuming it uses Nintendo’s indicator pattern.

How long does charging take?

Device Approximate time Condition
Switch console About 3 hours Powered off or in Sleep Mode
Joy-Con About 3.5 hours Attached to a powered console or connected to a charging accessory
Pro Controller About 6 hours Using its supported charging connection

These are approximate figures, not guarantees. Playing while charging, battery age, temperature, the condition of the adapter, and the charging accessory can change the result. Nintendo says the Switch console battery gradually loses capacity and may retain about 80% of its original capacity after approximately 800 charge cycles. That is general battery-aging guidance, not a guarantee for every console or Joy-Con.

Troubleshoot charging problems

Joy-Con are attached but not charging

  1. Confirm that the console is connected to AC power.
  2. Make sure the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode.
  3. Remove and reattach both Joy-Con, ensuring they are fully seated.
  4. Check HOME Menu → Controllers for a charging indicator.
  5. Inspect the adapter, cable, rails, and contacts for dirt or damage.

If the Joy-Con charge with a Charging Grip but not while attached to the console, the console or its rail connection may require service. If the problem follows one controller, that Joy-Con may require service instead.

The standard Grip does not charge

That is normal if the accessory is HAC-011. It is a passive grip. Charging requires HAC-012 or another compatible charging accessory.

The Charging Grip LED is off

The battery may already be full; Nintendo says the LED turns off when charging is complete. If the Joy-Con are not nearly full, unplug the AC adapter from both the wall and accessory for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect everything and try again.

The dock USB port does nothing

  • Confirm that the dock is connected to the Switch AC Adapter.
  • Reconnect the accessory cable at both ends.
  • Use the supplied cable or one explicitly documented as compatible.
  • Reset the adapter by disconnecting it from both ends for at least 30 seconds.

A USB port on an unpowered dock will not provide the expected power to a Charging Grip or other accessory. Nintendo provides additional dock USB troubleshooting.

The console shows no charging sign

When the battery is extremely low, the screen may remain off even though the console is receiving power. If a charging indicator appears, leave it connected for approximately 15–30 minutes before trying to start it. If no indicator appears, test the wall outlet, HAC-002 adapter, cable, and console connection individually.

One Joy-Con charges but the other does not

Remove and reattach both controllers, inspect the rails and contacts, and test the affected Joy-Con with a known-good Charging Grip or Charging Stand if available. If the fault follows the controller, the controller may need service. If it occurs only on one console rail, the console may need service.

Which charging accessory is worth buying?

  • No extra accessory: Best if you normally charge Joy-Con attached to a standard Switch or OLED Model.
  • Joy-Con Charging Grip HAC-012: Best if you want to keep using both detached Joy-Con as one controller while they charge.
  • Joy-Con Charging Stand: Useful for Switch Lite owners or anyone who wants a permanent tabletop charging location.
  • Multi-controller charging dock: Worth considering only when you regularly charge several controllers. Check explicit original-Switch compatibility, power requirements, included cable, safety information, warranty, and support.
  • Replacement HAC-002 adapter: Appropriate when the original adapter is missing, damaged, or needed in another room. It is not a universal recommendation for Switch 2.

For another controller option, Nintendo’s Pro Controller charges independently and takes approximately six hours to fully charge according to Nintendo’s support documentation.

Safety and compatibility reminders

  • Use the HAC-002 adapter for the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model unless Nintendo or the accessory manufacturer explicitly documents another charger as compatible.
  • Do not assume that every USB-C phone charger, dock, cable, or grip is suitable.
  • Do not mix original Joy-Con and HAC-002 instructions with Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2 equipment.
  • Stop using visibly damaged charging equipment and seek support if cleaning, reconnecting, and testing with known-good equipment do not resolve the problem.
