Do not delete save data as a routine troubleshooting step.
Identify the type of crash
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| The game closes with “The software was closed because an error occurred.” | Restart, update, check corrupt data, then reinstall. |
| The game freezes but the Switch still responds | Restart, test another mode or save, and report a repeatable freeze. |
| The game will not launch | Update it, check for corrupt data, and reinstall to system memory. |
| Only one save, mode, stadium, or challenge crashes | Test a different save or mode before changing the installation. |
| Several games crash | Investigate the console, storage, microSD card, or hardware. |
| Only online features fail while the game remains open | Treat it as a network, account, or service problem rather than a local crash. |
| The entire console becomes unresponsive | Force it off, then update and test the system. |
These categories are troubleshooting clues, not confirmed diagnoses.
1. Restart the Nintendo Switch
For a normal restart, hold the physical POWER button for at least three seconds, choose Power Options, and select Restart.
If the console is frozen, hold the POWER button for roughly 12–20 seconds until it shuts down. Nintendo uses slightly different durations in its troubleshooting guidance. Wait briefly, turn the console on again, and retry the game.

#1 Best Overall
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
Restarting is low risk and can clear a temporary software state, but it will not repair damaged installation files or a persistent game bug.
2. Update the Switch and MLB The Show 25
Update system software
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Choose System.
- Select System Update.
- Install any available update and restart if prompted.
A system update can resolve compatibility issues, but it is not guaranteed to repair a defective installation or game-specific bug. See Nintendo’s unexpected-shutdown guidance.
Update the game
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- Highlight MLB The Show 25 on the HOME Menu without launching it.
- Press + or –.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Do not rely on an unverified “latest patch” number. Available versions can change, and the official support material supplied here does not establish one universal 2026 Switch patch that fixes every crash. The official MLB The Show 25 support hub is the appropriate place to check current game information.
3. Check for corrupted game data
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Manage Software.
- Select MLB The Show 25.
- Choose Check for Corrupt Data.
- Follow the instructions if corruption is found.
This is a diagnostic step and is comparatively low risk. It is not the same as deleting save data. Nintendo’s guidance is available in its software-crash troubleshooting article.

4. Reinstall the game to internal storage
If the game is downloaded, a clean installation is the strongest next test—especially when it is installed on a microSD card.
- Make sure you know the Nintendo Account used to purchase the game.
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > MLB The Show 25.
- Select Delete Software, not Delete Save Data.
- Power off the Switch completely.
- Remove the microSD card if one is installed.
- Turn the console on and redownload the game directly to system memory.
- Launch it before reinstalling optional content or moving it back to the card.
Nintendo states that save data is stored in system memory, so deleting software is generally separate from deleting saves. Nevertheless, read each prompt carefully. A nearly full or unreliable storage device can also prevent a complete redownload.
If the game works from internal storage but crashes from the microSD card, storage is involved. That does not prove the card is defective; it could be failing, corrupted, counterfeit, incompatible, or simply low on free space. Do not format the card casually: formatting permanently deletes data stored on it.
If you use a physical game card
Remove the cartridge and inspect it for visible dirt or damage. Reinsert it securely and test again. Do not use liquids or abrasive materials. If the same card continues failing after updates and restarts, or other physical cards show similar problems, contact Nintendo about service for the console or game card.

- This Amazon Renewed product is professionally inspected and tested by an Amazon qualified supplier. Box and accessories may be generic.
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more.
- Comes with charging cable (USB-C to USB-A)
5. If only one save or mode crashes
A crash that always occurs in one Franchise, Road to the Show, March to October, or other save may indicate a damaged save state or a game-specific bug rather than a bad installation.
Test the following without deleting the affected save:
- Start a new exhibition game.
- Open a different save.
- Compare offline and online play.
- Try another stadium, roster, matchup, or challenge.
- Avoid the exact menu or action that triggers the crash and see whether the rest of the game works.
If a new game works while one existing save repeatedly fails at the same point, reinstalling may not repair that save. Do not delete it as a first response. If the title and account support Save Data Cloud, recovery depends on that support and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; restoring an older backup can remove progress made after the backup date. Nintendo explains these limitations in its save-data and initialization guidance.
6. Separate crashes from online-service problems
If the software closes, follow the crash workflow above. If the game stays open but Diamond Dynasty, account linking, matchmaking, or another online feature fails, investigate your connection, account status, and official service communications instead.

Do not assume an outage is occurring without current confirmation. If the problem began after live-content changes or maintenance, avoid repeatedly deleting saves and report the behavior through the official MLB The Show support hub.
7. Test other games
Run at least one other game or application on the same Switch. If only MLB The Show 25 crashes, continue with the game-specific steps. If several games crash, the likely troubleshooting area expands to the console, microSD card, internal storage, overheating, or hardware.
At that point:
- Install the latest system update.
- Check available internal and microSD storage.
- Test MLB The Show 25 from internal storage.
- Stop repeatedly reinstalling or deleting saves if multiple titles are affected.
- Contact Nintendo support.
8. Initialize without deleting save data
Use this only after the less destructive steps fail. It is not a first-line solution for one isolated crash.
- Turn the Switch completely off.
- Hold Volume Up (+) and Volume Down (–).
- Press the POWER button while continuing to hold both volume buttons.
- Keep holding them until Maintenance Mode appears.
- Choose Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.
- Read the warning and confirm.
This option preserves save data, screenshots, and user information, but software stored on the microSD card becomes unusable until it is redownloaded. Confirm your Nintendo Account credentials, reliable internet access, and sufficient storage first. Do not select a full factory reset by mistake. See Nintendo’s official initialization instructions.

9. Report a repeatable crash to San Diego Studio
If the problem survives an internal-storage reinstall, or happens at a reproducible point in a particular mode or save, submit a report through San Diego Studio’s freeze-reporting process.
Include:
- Switch model, such as Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2.
- Digital download or physical game card.
- Game and system software versions.
- Whether the game is installed internally or on microSD.
- The exact mode, menu, stadium, save, or action before the crash.
- Whether it happens every time.
- Whether other games work normally.
- What troubleshooting steps you already completed.
There is no verified universal setting that fixes every Switch crash. San Diego Studio notes that freezes can have causes outside the player’s control, so persistent failures may require a game fix rather than another local reset.
When to contact Nintendo
Use Nintendo’s support or repair process when multiple games crash, the console locks up repeatedly, a physical game card appears faulty, the game still fails after a clean internal-storage reinstall, or the problem suggests storage or hardware damage.
These instructions apply to the Switch version and are intended to cover the original Switch family. The dossier does not establish a Switch 2-specific performance fix or compatibility behavior, so do not assume that newer hardware alone will resolve the issue. Also keep MLB The Show 25 separate from later yearly editions: progress does not automatically transfer between different editions, according to San Diego Studio’s transfer guidance.
