There is no single fix for every Monster Hunter Rise crash on Windows. Start with the reversible checks: remove mods and overlays, verify the game files, update Windows and your graphics driver, return hardware tuning to stock, and test with lower graphics settings. Only then move to shader-cache cleanup, security-software checks, a Windows clean boot, repair tools, or a reinstall.
The correct solution depends on when the crash occurs and whether you use the Steam or Microsoft Store/Xbox app edition.
Identify the crash first
| Symptom | Areas to investigate |
|---|---|
| Steam changes to “Running” and then returns to “Play” | Mods, antivirus, missing files, drivers, overlays, or permissions |
| Crash immediately after launching | REFramework or other injected files, antivirus, incompatible drivers, or damaged settings |
| Crash during shader compilation or loading | Shader cache, graphics driver, rendering settings, or damaged files |
| Crash only during hunts | GPU or CPU instability, overheating, VRAM/RAM pressure, or a driver timeout |
| Fatal D3D or graphics-device error | GPU driver, unstable overclock, graphics settings, or DirectX-related components |
| Crash after a Windows or driver update | Driver regression, changed security settings, or an overlay conflict |
| Crash with a second monitor, dock, or laptop GPU | Hybrid-GPU routing, external-GPU support, or display-driver configuration |
| Crash only with mods installed | An outdated or incompatible mod; test a completely vanilla installation |
Error messages are useful clues, but none of these messages proves a particular cause by itself.
Quick fix checklist
- Remove mods, REFramework, DLL injectors, reshade files, and overlays.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Confirm that your PC meets the current requirements and that the dedicated GPU is being used.
- Update Windows and install the correct graphics driver.
- Disable GPU, CPU, and memory overclocks or undervolts.
- Reset graphics settings, lower the frame-rate cap, and clear the shader cache.
- Check antivirus, firewall, permissions, and compatibility settings.
- Use a Windows clean boot to isolate background software.
- Repair the Microsoft Store/Xbox app installation if applicable.
- Reinstall only after the earlier tests fail, then collect crash evidence for Capcom.
Before troubleshooting: identify your PC edition
Steam and Microsoft Store/Xbox app installations use different repair tools and file locations.

1. Remove mods, REFramework, overlays, and injected tools
Test the game in a completely unmodified state before changing Windows or reinstalling. Mods, mod loaders, third-party DLLs, ReShade files, capture tools, and monitoring hooks can stop the game from launching or become incompatible after a game or driver update.
- Exit Monster Hunter Rise and Steam.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Temporarily move or rename REFramework, mod-loader files, DLL files, ReShade files, and other injected files. Do not delete them until you have backed up anything you may want to restore.
- Start Steam and verify the game files.
- Launch the vanilla game and repeat the action that normally causes the crash.
Capcom states that modifications and programs not used through the Steam store are outside its warranty and support scope. That does not prove a mod caused your crash, but a clean vanilla test is essential. Do not treat REFramework as an official Capcom fix; it is third-party software and may itself require updates.
2. Verify the Steam files
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Monster Hunter Rise and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files (or Local files on older clients).
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan, restart Steam, and test the game again.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files are not replaced. That message does not automatically mean the repair failed.
If Steam repeatedly reacquires the same files, close Steam completely and reboot, check available disk space, remove mods, and check whether antivirus software is quarantining the game executable. Moving the installation to another drive is a later diagnostic step, not the first response.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Check requirements and GPU selection
The current Steam listing specifies 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, a Core i5-4460 or AMD FX-8300-class processor, a GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB or Radeon RX 570 4 GB-class GPU, about 23 GB of storage, and DirectX 12. Check the live listing because store metadata and requirements can change.
Minimum requirements do not guarantee stable performance. Systems below them are not officially supported, and some integrated graphics, hybrid laptops, external GPUs, multi-GPU systems, and pre-release Windows builds may not be tested or supported.
On a laptop, connect AC power and confirm Windows or the GPU control panel assigns Monster Hunter Rise to the dedicated GPU. If you use a dock or external GPU, disconnect it temporarily and test the laptop’s normal display path.
4. Update Windows and perform a clean GPU-driver installation
Install current Windows updates and obtain drivers only from the manufacturer:
A normal update may not remove damaged profiles or old driver files. If the crash began after several driver changes, perform a clean installation. For NVIDIA, download the correct package, choose the custom or advanced installation option when offered, and select the clean-install option as described in NVIDIA’s instructions. For AMD, the current Adrenalin installer may provide a Factory Reset option; use the package appropriate for your GPU and Windows version, following AMD’s guidance.
For laptops, the manufacturer’s graphics package may be preferable if a generic driver causes display switching or power-management problems. After changing GPUs, remove old vendor software where appropriate before installing the driver for the current card.

5. Return hardware tuning to stock
Temporarily disable GPU overclocks and undervolts, CPU overclocks, custom GPU profiles, frame-limiters, and monitoring hooks. If other demanding games also crash, test with the memory XMP or EXPO profile disabled as well. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every system must run without its memory profile.
Crashes under load accompanied by black screens, reboots, graphical artifacts, or failures in multiple games point toward overheating, unstable RAM, power delivery, BIOS configuration, or failing hardware rather than a Monster Hunter Rise-only problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Reset graphics settings and clear shader caches
Use lower settings, borderless or windowed mode, a lower frame-rate cap, and reduced texture quality as diagnostic changes. These tests can reveal VRAM pressure, fullscreen conflicts, or GPU instability. Restore your preferred settings gradually after the game becomes stable.
Damaged shader-cache files can cause loading or graphical problems. Close the game and Steam, clear the driver shader cache through the GPU control panel or available Windows storage tools, reboot, and launch the game again. The first launch may take longer and stutter while shaders are rebuilt.
Cache locations vary by GPU vendor, Windows version, driver, and configuration. Do not blindly delete arbitrary folders in AppData; back up configuration files first and use the vendor’s supported cleanup controls.
7. Check antivirus, firewall, permissions, and compatibility
Security software can block a game executable or prevent it from writing required files. Use a narrow, temporary exclusion rather than disabling protection permanently. Capcom lists these common default locations:

C:Program Files (x86)Steam
Steam AppData
C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataLocalSteam
Your Steam library may be on another drive. Do not exclude an entire drive, and remove an exclusion that does not help. Re-enable security protection after testing.
As a temporary permissions test, close Steam, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and launch the game. If that changes the result, investigate folder ownership, Controlled Folder Access, or antivirus behavior instead of permanently running every game with elevated privileges.
Also check the game executable’s Properties → Compatibility tab. Disable forced Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility mode unless a specific support case requires it. If crashes appear tied to fullscreen presentation, test Disable fullscreen optimizations, borderless mode, or windowed mode individually.
8. Disable overlays and background applications
Temporarily close or disable:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD Radeon overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- RGB, hardware-monitoring, recording, ReShade, macro, and capture software
Re-enable programs one at a time after the game is stable. This identifies the conflict without leaving security or accessibility software disabled indefinitely.

9. Clean boot Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, helping identify a background conflict.
- Sign in with an administrator account and search for
msconfig. - Open System Configuration.
- On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items.
- Restart and test Monster Hunter Rise.
Record what you disabled. Microsoft warns that a clean boot can temporarily reduce functionality. When testing is complete, open msconfig, choose Normal startup, re-enable the disabled items, and restart.
Use Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions if the labels differ on your Windows build.
10. Repair the Microsoft Store/Xbox app edition
For the Microsoft Store/Xbox app edition, use the Xbox app or Windows’ installed-app repair controls rather than Steam verification. Windows commonly exposes these under Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Monster Hunter Rise → Advanced options, although labels can vary by build.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Try Repair first. Use Reset only after backing up saves and configuration data, because reset operations can remove local app data. Capcom’s platform-specific instructions reference the installation area C:XboxGamesMonster Hunter RiseContent and the executable runtime_il2cpp.exe; consult its current Microsoft Store guidance for the applicable procedure.
11. Repair Windows components, then consider reinstalling
Windows Update supplies the built-in DirectX 12 components. The Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime supplies older side-by-side components used by some games. Installing the latest supported runtime may help missing legacy components, but it will not fix unstable hardware or every DX12 graphics-device crash.
From an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, run:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart after both checks. These commands repair Windows system or component files; they do not repair Monster Hunter Rise files or GPU hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
Only after verification, driver cleanup, mod removal, background-app isolation, and Windows repair fail should you reinstall the game. Back up local saves and configuration first. Steam Cloud is useful but is not a substitute for a deliberate local backup. Reinstalling Windows is disproportionate unless broader system corruption has been demonstrated.
If it still crashes: collect evidence
Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance says a CrashReport folder is created after a crash by default and asks for graphics settings, region or location, and a DxDiag report.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows 11 itself cause Monster Hunter Rise to crash?
Not necessarily. A crash after a Windows update may involve a graphics-driver change, security setting, overlay, or compatibility issue. Identify when the crash occurs and test the reversible fixes before blaming the operating system.
Should I switch Monster Hunter Rise from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11?
Treat that as an optional, community-reported experiment rather than an official universal fix. DirectX 11 changes cannot repair unstable hardware, corrupted files, or every driver problem.
Can mods cause launch or mid-game crashes?
Yes. Remove all mods and injected files and verify a vanilla installation first. Reintroduce modifications individually only after the unmodified game is stable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does Steam say files failed to validate?
Steam may identify local configuration files that it does not replace. A verification result is not automatically a failed repair; investigate further if the same game files are repeatedly reacquired.
What if every PC game crashes?
Prioritize GPU-driver cleanup, temperatures, overclock and memory stability, BIOS settings, power delivery, and RAM or GPU diagnostics. A problem affecting multiple games is less likely to be specific to Monster Hunter Rise.
Should I reinstall Windows?
No—not early in the process. Verify files, remove mods, update or clean-install the driver, isolate background software, and run Windows repair checks first.
