GameSir’s Pocket Taco is a wireless Bluetooth controller that clamps onto the bottom of a smartphone, leaving the display above it in a vertical, Game Boy-inspired layout. It is an appealing idea for portrait retro gaming—but it is not a Game Boy accessory, does not include games or an emulator, and lacks analog sticks.
The Pocket Taco is listed at $34.99 by GameSir, although an official promotion has shown it at $29.99. The price and stock information here reflect GameSir listings checked on August 18, 2026. See the Pocket Taco at GameSir.
What the Pocket Taco actually is
Unlike a conventional telescopic controller, the Pocket Taco does not extend along the sides of the phone. Its clamp grips the lower portion of the handset, while the phone’s screen rises above the controls. The result resembles a small vertical handheld: the phone supplies the display, and the Pocket Taco supplies the physical buttons.
“Game Boy-style” is the accurate description. The controller recreates the portrait shape and grip, but it contains no screen, software, games, emulator or Nintendo licensing. Its extra ABXY buttons, shoulder buttons and triggers also make it more versatile than the original Game Boy’s control layout.

Wireless connection, with a practical trade-off
The Pocket Taco communicates over Bluetooth rather than plugging into the phone’s USB-C or Lightning port. That leaves the port free and avoids connector-position restrictions, but the controller needs its own charging and adds the usual Bluetooth considerations: pairing, battery management and the possibility of device- or game-dependent latency.
GameSir lists a built-in 600 mAh rechargeable battery, but the available specifications do not establish a verified runtime. The controller’s hollow lower design leaves the phone’s charging connector accessible while attached. This is only pass-through access to the phone’s port—not a power bank or wireless charger.

Product documentation and manuals may still identify the device as Pocket 1, P1 or “GameSir-Pocket 1.” Those names refer to the same product lineage and may appear during Bluetooth pairing. Phone and game compatibility are separate questions
GameSir’s official wording is “Android and other compatible devices.” Retail listings and independent coverage identify iPhone use, but that should not be treated as a guarantee for every iPhone, iOS version or game. The available listing also does not establish MFi certification.
Before buying, check five different kinds of compatibility:
- Physical fit: The clamp must clear the phone case, camera bump and side buttons. Bluetooth removes connector restrictions, but it does not make every phone physically compatible.
- Bluetooth recognition: The operating system must detect and connect to the controller.
- Native gamepad support: The individual game or emulator must accept standard controller input.
- Touch mapping: GameSir’s G-Touch and V-Touch modes may help with touch-based games, subject to operating-system and app limitations.
- Portrait usability: The game must remain useful when the phone is held vertically, with important play space and controls positioned above the controller.
GameSir does not provide a universal phone-dimension guarantee in the cited product details. If you use a thick case or a phone with a prominent camera module, confirm clearance before ordering.
The games it suits best
The Pocket Taco’s strongest use case is retro gaming in portrait orientation. It should make the most sense with:

- Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance-style emulation;
- NES, SNES, Genesis and similar games that display well vertically;
- Arcade games and vertical shooters;
- Portrait mobile games with native controller support; and
- Touch-based games that can be configured through a supported GameSir mapping mode.
It is a weaker choice for modern 3D games, racing games and shooters that depend on two analog sticks or camera control. Landscape-only games are also a poor match. So are titles that put essential information, navigation or virtual controls at the bottom of the screen—the exact area occupied by the controller.
Emulator support is not automatic. A Bluetooth connection can succeed while the emulator still requires manual button assignment, portrait-mode configuration or screen repositioning. Use legally obtained games and software; the Pocket Taco supplies input only and does not provide ROMs or copyrighted games.
How to pair and configure it
- Charge the Pocket Taco.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone.
- Put the controller into the appropriate connection mode using the current supplied manual.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth device list.
- Select the GameSir/Pocket entry. It may appear under an older name such as “GameSir-Pocket 1.”
- After pairing, test it in a known compatible game or emulator.
- Map buttons in the game or emulator if the default layout is incorrect.
Mode-specific button combinations have appeared inconsistently in mirrored documentation, so the manual supplied with the shipping product should take precedence over an older online copy. Where supported, use the GameSir app for firmware updates, customization and touch-mapping configuration.
If it will not pair
- Confirm that the controller has charge.
- Forget an old Pocket or Pocket Taco entry, then try again.
- Disconnect the controller from another nearby phone, tablet, PC or console.
- Check that the correct operating mode is selected.
- Restart Bluetooth and the phone.
- Update firmware through the GameSir app where supported.
- Test standard controller input before debugging the emulator or touch-mapping setup.
Some user reports describe pairing or latency problems improving after deleting old Bluetooth records and updating firmware. These are anecdotal failure modes, not evidence that every unit has the same defect. Reports of false diagonals or incorrect D-pad input also exist; GameSir lists a diagonal-lock setting, but that should not be assumed to fix every hardware issue.

The biggest limitation is the screen layout
The controller necessarily covers the lower part of the phone. That is central to the design, not something a software update can remove. The Pocket Taco works best when an emulator or game can place the useful gameplay area in the upper portion of a portrait display.
Tall phones may leave plenty of screen above the controller, but apps with bottom navigation bars, status information or virtual buttons can become awkward. Large phones may also make the compact controller feel visually or ergonomically small. Independent hands-on coverage from TechRadar highlights the screen-obstruction and portrait-layout trade-offs.

GameSir’s official product page lists the Pocket Taco at $34.99. A separate official listing has shown a temporary $29.99 price, so the lower figure should be treated as a promotion rather than the permanent list price. GameSir says first preorders shipped on March 15, 2026, and its August 18 listing described stock as adequate and ready to ship. Alternatives
8BitDo FlipPad
The 8BitDo FlipPad is the closest conceptual alternative. It uses a wired USB-C connection instead of Bluetooth and weighs 31.5 g, making it lighter and potentially simpler for buyers who prioritize direct input and low latency. 8BitDo lists iPhone support from iOS 26.2 and Android support from Android 13. It does, however, depend on the phone’s port and is not the wireless option. GamesRadar reported a launch price of about $30; verify the current official price before comparing totals.

- Hall Effect Analog Triggers: GameSir’s precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unparalleled smoothness and responsiveness. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT.
GameSir G8 Plus
The GameSir G8 Plus is the better choice for modern mobile games. Its conventional landscape grip and Hall Effect sticks are much more appropriate for 3D action, racing and camera-heavy games, though it is larger and less pocketable than the Pocket Taco.
GameSir G8 Galileo
The wired G8 Galileo offers a full-size console-style grip, Hall Effect sticks, analog triggers and back buttons. It sacrifices the Pocket Taco’s unusual vertical design in exchange for comfort and precision.
Who should buy the Pocket Taco?
Buy it if you specifically want a compact portrait controller for retro games, prefer Bluetooth, value shoulder buttons and triggers, and are comfortable configuring emulators or touch controls.
Skip it if you need analog sticks, mainly play landscape games, demand the lowest possible latency, dislike charging another battery-powered device, or want one controller for phones, PCs and consoles.
The Pocket Taco’s value is not universal controller performance. It is the distinctive form factor. At $29.99 on promotion—or $34.99 at list price—it is worth considering for players who genuinely want a Game Boy-like portrait setup. Everyone else will likely get more use from a conventional telescopic gamepad.
