Ubuntu 24.04 LTS has a strong strategy-game catalog, but “works on Ubuntu” can mean different things. Some games have a native Linux build, while others run through Steam Play and Proton. This guide separates those cases and ranks 11 worthwhile choices by gameplay, reliability, hardware demands, replayability, and value.
Prices, editions, DLC, regional availability, and compatibility can change. The pricing context here is the United States storefront; check the linked Steam page before buying.

How the ranking works
This is an editorial ranking, not a universal performance test. The order weighs native platform support, reliability, strategic depth, replayability, single-player quality, multiplayer viability, hardware accessibility, learning curve, cost of entry, and DLC burden.
Native Linux means the Steam listing provides a SteamOS/Linux build. Proton-compatible means a Windows release runs through Valve’s compatibility layer, but a game update, driver, launcher, anti-cheat system, or Proton version can change the result. A native build is usually the simplest starting point, although an older native port is not automatically better than Proton.

1. Dota 2 — best free competitive strategy game
Dota 2 is a MOBA with strong RTS and strategic elements rather than a conventional empire-building game. Teams control heroes, manage resources and objectives, coordinate abilities, and destroy the opposing base. Steam lists it as free-to-play, with more than 100 heroes and all heroes available to players.
Ubuntu compatibility: Native SteamOS + Linux support is listed, including Ubuntu 12.04 or newer, 4 GB of RAM, and 60 GB of storage. Those are store-listed minimums, not a promise of smooth performance on every Ubuntu 24.04 computer.
Why buy or install: The cost of entry is effectively zero, the strategic ceiling is enormous, and multiplayer is active. Why skip: It is online-dependent, difficult to learn, competitive, and potentially stressful. In-game purchases are available, and single-player practice does not represent the full multiplayer experience.
2. Europa Universalis IV — best grand strategy
Europa Universalis IV lets you guide a country through diplomacy, trade, exploration, colonization, internal politics, and war across long historical campaigns. It is the strongest choice here for players who want a detailed historical sandbox rather than a sequence of short battles.
Ubuntu compatibility: The Steam page lists Linux support. It is primarily a single-player game but also supports multiplayer. Its learning curve is steep: expect to learn interfaces, economy, diplomacy, warfare, and changing historical systems before a campaign feels comfortable.
Cost and caveats: The base game is the sensible starting point. The major cost risk is the extensive DLC catalog and optional subscription decisions; do not assume every expansion is required. Choose it for depth and replayability, but skip it if you want quick matches or a simple tutorial-led experience.
3. Old World — best character-driven 4X
Old World combines familiar 4X foundations—settling, researching, producing, expanding, and fighting—with characters, families, succession, events, and political decisions. Leaders and dynasties are central rather than decorative, so a campaign feels more personal than a purely civilization-scale board game.
Ubuntu compatibility: Use the current Steam listing as the authority for its Linux support, requirements, reviews, and price. It offers single-player campaigns and multiplayer. The game is a good fit for serious strategy players who want meaningful decisions each turn, but its smaller audience and ancient-world setting may be less immediately familiar than Civilization-style alternatives.

- 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
- Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
- 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home
4. BATTLETECH — best tactical campaign
BATTLETECH alternates between deliberate, turn-based ‘Mech battles and a management layer involving repairs, refits, pilots, contracts, finances, and travel. Winning a battle is only part of the campaign: damage and operating costs can shape what you can attempt next.
Ubuntu compatibility: The Steam page lists Linux support. It is principally a single-player campaign, with additional multiplayer modes depending on the edition and current service availability. Battles can be lengthy, and the systems are less approachable than those of a casual strategy game.
Cost and caveats: DLC is optional but adds relevant content and variety, so compare the base game and complete editions before purchasing. Choose it for tactical customization and campaign consequence; skip it if you prefer fast real-time matches.
5. Tropico 6 — best political management game
Tropico 6 is a city and island-management game in which elections, factions, trade, infrastructure, and political power matter as much as construction. Its scenarios and role-playing premise make it a better fit for players who want to govern a society than for those seeking conventional battlefield strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUbuntu compatibility: The Steam listing provides the current platform and system information. It supports single-player and multiplayer. Performance is generally more dependent on the size and complexity of the simulation than on a short opening session.
Cost and caveats: The expansion catalog can make a complete collection substantially more expensive than the base game. Choose it for humor, scenarios, and political decisions; skip it if you want deep military tactics or a minimal-DLC purchase.
6. Age of Wonders III — best older fantasy 4X
Age of Wonders III combines empire building, city management, hero development, fantasy armies, and tactical battles. Unlike a 4X game that abstracts combat into a result screen, it asks you to fight many engagements directly.
Ubuntu compatibility: The Steam page lists Linux support, with single-player and multiplayer options. Its older design is an advantage for modest hardware, although large battles and visual settings still depend on the system.

Why choose it: It remains a strong value for fantasy strategy and tactical combat. Why skip: Its graphics and interface show their age. Age of Wonders 4 is a separate, newer product—not an automatic Linux-compatible replacement—so check its current platform status independently.
7. Mount & Blade: Warband — best medieval sandbox
Mount & Blade: Warband blends role-playing, army command, diplomacy, sieges, economic decisions, and real-time combat. You can recruit troops, build a faction, join a kingdom, or pursue an entirely different campaign path.
Ubuntu compatibility: The Steam listing provides a native Linux build. It supports single-player and multiplayer, while its mature mod ecosystem is a major part of its lasting appeal. Mods can require separate compatibility checks and may substantially change performance or stability.
Why choose it: It is unusually flexible and relatively suitable for older hardware. Why skip: The interface, graphics, and some systems are dated, and it is not a conventional turn-based strategy game.
8. Cities: Skylines — best city builder
Cities: Skylines focuses on zoning, transport, utilities, services, budgets, and the consequences of urban design. The real challenge is managing interconnected systems as the city grows.
Ubuntu compatibility: The Steam page lists Linux support. It is primarily single-player. A small city may run comfortably while a large city with a complex traffic simulation, hundreds of Workshop assets, and many mods becomes CPU- and memory-limited.
Hardware and cost caveats: “Launches” does not mean “runs well with a 100,000-population city.” Mods and assets can increase RAM use and load times substantially. The DLC ecosystem is also large. Cities: Skylines II is a different product and should not be treated as an automatic Linux successor.
9. Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers — best short-session strategy
Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is a single-player, blackjack-inspired deck-building roguelike. You build runs around cards, risk management, and more than 300 cards rather than armies or cities.

Ubuntu compatibility: Steam lists SteamOS + Linux support and a 750 MB storage requirement. The low hardware burden makes it one of the safest choices for an older laptop. Steam showed a US base price of $14.99 on August 18, 2026; discounts and regional prices change.
Why choose it: It is easy to launch, inexpensive compared with large strategy games, and well suited to short sessions or offline play after any required activation. Why skip: Its broad strategy classification may disappoint readers specifically seeking RTS, 4X, or grand strategy.
10. Silence of the Siren — best science-fiction exploration pick
Silence of the Siren combines turn-based exploration, resource management, base building, and combat in a science-fiction setting. It is aimed at players who enjoy discovering a map and developing forces over a campaign.
Ubuntu compatibility: Check the current Steam configuration before purchase. Early-access status and ongoing updates can change features, requirements, and whether the current build is native Linux, Proton-only, or unavailable on Linux. Do not treat an old compatibility report as a guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
Why choose it: It offers a less common science-fiction strategy setting. Why skip: Early-access development creates more uncertainty around content coverage, bugs, balance, and long-term compatibility than with the established games above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Crusader Kings III: Roads to Power — best expansion for existing owners
Crusader Kings III: Roads to Power adds Byzantine-themed content and landless-adventurer gameplay to Crusader Kings III. It is a strong choice for players who want dynastic role-playing strategy with a different campaign structure.
Important: This is an expansion, not a standalone game. It requires the Crusader Kings III base game, so its real cost is the base game plus the expansion unless you already own the former. The base game, rather than this DLC alone, is the relevant Linux game installation. Check the current Steam listing for platform support, pricing, and ownership requirements.
Why choose it: It adds a distinctive way to play Crusader Kings III. Why skip it: It is the wrong purchase if you do not already own or intend to buy the base game. If you want 11 standalone games, replace this entry with Crusader Kings III itself or an explicitly labeled open-source alternative.

Which game should you choose?
- Best free option: Dota 2. It is free-to-play, not a completely offline or purchase-free game.
- Best grand strategy: Europa Universalis IV.
- Best character-driven 4X: Old World.
- Best tactical strategy: BATTLETECH.
- Best city builder: Cities: Skylines.
- Best political simulation: Tropico 6.
- Best fantasy strategy: Age of Wonders III.
- Best medieval sandbox: Mount & Blade: Warband.
- Best modest-hardware short-session game: Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers.
- Best expansion for an existing owner: Roads to Power.
Best choices for offline and modest-hardware play
For offline-focused players, start with BATTLETECH, Age of Wonders III, Mount & Blade: Warband, Old World, or Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers. Some features, cloud saves, Workshop content, or first activation may still require an internet connection.
For older laptops, Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, Age of Wonders III, and Warband are the most suitable starting points. Dota 2 may also be practical at reduced settings, but its online nature and variable match performance make it a different proposition. Cities: Skylines is the least predictable: CPU simulation, RAM, assets, mods, and laptop thermal throttling matter more than simply meeting the store’s minimum specification.
Installing strategy games on Ubuntu 24.04
- Install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS updates. With NVIDIA hardware, install the recommended proprietary driver through Software & Updates → Additional Drivers. AMD and Intel systems generally use the Mesa graphics stack delivered through Ubuntu updates.
- Install Steam from an Ubuntu-supported source or Valve’s official Linux download page, then sign in.
- Open Steam → Library, select a game, and install it. Prefer a Linux filesystem such as ext4 for the Steam library where possible.
- For a game with a native Linux listing, use the default installation first. Do not force Proton unnecessarily.
- For a Windows game that requires Proton, open Properties → Compatibility and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Start with the default Proton version, then try Proton Experimental or another current stable version only if needed.
- Launch once before adding mods, overlays, injectors, or custom launch options.
Proton is free and integrated with Steam. ProtonDB provides useful community reports, but it is not an official warranty and reports can vary by GPU, driver, Proton version, and game update. Lutris is a free, open-source option for games outside Steam or advanced Wine configurations, but it adds setup complexity.
What hardware matters most?
- GPU: Important for 3D rendering, resolution, effects, and driver/Vulkan support.
- CPU: Often the limiting factor in grand-strategy turns, city simulations, traffic, and large battles.
- RAM: Especially important for Cities: Skylines, large mods, and asset-heavy installations.
- Storage: Leave room for DLC, shader caches, Workshop content, and Proton prefixes. Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers is unusually small at 750 MB according to its Steam listing.
- Shader compilation: Proton and some 3D games may stutter temporarily while shaders are prepared.
- Thermals: Thin laptops can reduce CPU and GPU speeds after sustained play.
Minimum Steam requirements should be treated as a starting point, not a performance guarantee. Resolution, driver version, desktop compositor, save size, mod load, and background applications can change the result.

Troubleshooting launch and compatibility problems
- Restart Steam, then reboot Ubuntu.
- Use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Remove custom launch options.
- For native games, first test the default native build. For Proton titles, test the default Proton setting and then one other Proton version.
- Disable overlays, third-party injectors, and unsupported mods.
- Check whether the problem started after a game, Steam, driver, or Proton update.
- For multiplayer failures, investigate anti-cheat, matchmaking, voice services, and server support separately from single-player launch success.
- Only after backing up saves and understanding the consequences should you rename or remove a Proton prefix. It can contain configuration and local save data, so deleting it is not a first-line fix.
Native and Proton installations can use different save locations, and Steam Cloud is not a universal backup. Cities: Skylines mods and assets can cause long loads, memory pressure, and crashes even when the unmodified game works.
Open-source and other alternatives
If you want a fully free or open-source route, consider Linux-native projects such as 0 A.D., Battle for Wesnoth, FreeCiv, and OpenRA. Their availability and installation method can differ between Ubuntu repositories, Flatpak, and project releases, so check each project’s current instructions.
For newer 4X games, investigate current Steam listings individually rather than assuming that a Windows release is native Linux. For Proton-only games, check ProtonDB and recent community discussions before buying. Multiplayer games with kernel-level or unsupported anti-cheat, proprietary launchers, or unusual video codecs are the riskiest choices when reliable Linux multiplayer is essential.
