F1 2017 has an official native Linux version developed by Feral Interactive, but its original target was Ubuntu 17.04 and the game may no longer be available for new purchase on Steam. If you already own it, install it through your Steam Library. Try the native Linux build first; if it fails on a modern Ubuntu system, use Steam Play and Proton as a fallback.
Do not download an “F1 2017 Ubuntu” installer, crack, torrent, or unofficial mirror. The legitimate Linux installation was delivered through Steam.
Check whether F1 2017 is still available to you
Steam’s current search results do not show the base game among the normal results, and the DLC page does not list products. That suggests F1 2017 may be delisted or unavailable for new purchase, although search results do not establish the exact policy for every country or account.

How to install F1 2017 from Steam
Feral’s official documentation says Steam handles the game’s download and installation. There is no separate Feral installer for F1 2017.
- Install the official Steam client.
- Sign in to the account that owns F1 2017.
- Open Library and select F1 2017.
- Click Install.
- Choose a Steam library location with sufficient free space.
- Allow Steam to complete the download and installation.
- Click Play.
On the native Linux build, the normal first-run sequence is Library → F1 2017 → Play, followed by Feral’s pre-game Options window. Select Play in that window to continue to the title screen. The Options window is not a second installer or necessarily a failed launch.
Important: If Steam does not show an Install or Purchase button, do not download an executable from a third-party “F1 2017 Ubuntu” website. A valid Steam entitlement is the official route for the Linux version.
Native Linux support versus modern Ubuntu compatibility
These are separate questions:
- Was there a native Linux version? Yes. Feral Interactive officially developed and published one.
- Was it tested on current Ubuntu releases? Not according to the original documentation. Feral identified Ubuntu 17.04 as the fully tested distribution.
- Will it run on every current Ubuntu installation? No guarantee can be made. Later Ubuntu releases and other distributions may work, but were not officially tested in Feral’s documentation.
Ubuntu 17.04 is obsolete and should not be installed or revived solely to meet an old game requirement. Use a supported Ubuntu release and its current driver packages instead. The native build may work, but its release-era runtime and graphics assumptions can conflict with a modern system.

Official Linux system requirements
The following are Feral’s original Linux requirements, not a guarantee of compatibility with current Ubuntu versions.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 17.04 | Ubuntu 17.04 |
| Processor | 3.3 GHz Intel Core i3-3225 | 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5-6600K |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA 680 series or third-generation AMD GCN | NVIDIA GTX 1070 |
| Video memory | 2 GB VRAM | 8 GB VRAM |
| Graphics API | Vulkan | Vulkan |
| Storage | 36 GB | 36 GB |
Feral’s release documentation also listed NVIDIA driver 384.90 or newer and Mesa 17.2.2 for the supported AMD configuration. Those numbers describe the 2017 release environment. Do not blindly install or downgrade to those obsolete versions on a current Ubuntu system; use Ubuntu’s normal driver-management tools and the current vendor-supported driver for your hardware.
Keep more than the stated 36 GB free. Steam may need additional space for updates, shader caches, temporary installation files, and compatibility data. Intel graphics were not supported by Feral at release, and AMD Vega was also outside the original supported configuration. Modern Proton behavior may differ, but neither should be treated as guaranteed.
Prepare Ubuntu before launching
- Update Ubuntu normally through its supported software-update process.
- Confirm that the GPU is recognized correctly.
- Install the appropriate current graphics driver recommended by Ubuntu for your GPU.
- Reboot after changing graphics drivers.
- Check whether Vulkan works with the installed driver. Other Vulkan games can provide a useful basic check.
- Connect your controller or wheel before starting the game.
Do not install Feral’s old driver versions just because they appear in the original requirements. A driver that was appropriate for Ubuntu 17.04 may conflict with a current kernel, display server, or package set.
When to use the native build or Proton
| Situation | First choice |
|---|---|
| Steam offers the native Linux build | Try the native build first |
| The native build fails on a current Ubuntu release | Test Proton |
| Steam does not recognize the game as Linux-compatible | Enable Steam Play and select Proton |
| Steam Deck or SteamOS | Use Steam’s compatibility configuration and test the available Proton option |
| You want a maintained compatibility path for a legacy game | Proton may be more practical, but results remain system-dependent |
The native version has the advantage of being officially made for Linux and historically supported by Feral. Proton can be more practical on a modern Linux graphics stack, but it adds a compatibility layer and its performance, video playback, controller behavior, force feedback, and online features can vary by Proton release and hardware.

Enable Proton as a fallback
Ubuntu’s Steam documentation describes the following Steam Play path:
- Open Steam.
- Go to Steam → Settings.
- Open Steam Play, or the equivalent compatibility section in your Steam client.
- Enable Enable Steam Play for supported titles.
- If necessary, also enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
- Restart Steam if it asks you to do so.
- In Library, right-click F1 2017 and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose an installed Proton release and launch the game.
Steam Play downloads the required Proton compatibility libraries automatically. Do not assume that one Proton version is universally best. SteamDB records Proton 7.0-1 in compatibility metadata for this title, but that historical record is not proof that it is the right choice for every Ubuntu installation in 2026.

F1 2017 supports keyboard and mouse, gamepads, and steering wheels. Feral recommended an analog gamepad or wheel with analog triggers for the best racing experience.
- Test the device in Steam’s controller settings before launching.
- Use a wired connection while diagnosing detection or mapping problems.
- Confirm that a wheel appears as a recognized USB device.
- Check the game’s control mapping separately from Steam Input mappings.
- Expect force feedback and button behavior to differ between the native build and Proton.
No particular wheel should be considered guaranteed compatible without system-specific testing. If the controller works in Steam but not in the game, compare the native and Proton paths and review both Steam Input and the game’s own control settings.
Troubleshooting F1 2017 on Ubuntu
The game is missing from the Library
Check that you are using the correct Steam account, search hidden games, remove restrictive library filters, and review purchase history. If the game was never owned and is not currently sold in your region, a third-party download is not a legitimate substitute. Contact official Steam support if your entitlement appears to be missing.

- Confirm that the current GPU driver is installed and the system has been rebooted after driver changes.
- Check Vulkan functionality.
- Try the native build if available.
- Try Proton if the native build fails.
- Temporarily disable overlays or background recording.
- Record your Ubuntu version, GPU, driver, Steam version, and Proton version before seeking support.
Black screen or immediate exit
Switch between the native build and Proton, verify Vulkan, and temporarily disable overlays. If configuration files may be corrupt, back up your saves first and then remove only the relevant configuration data rather than deleting the entire game directory.
Low performance
Check whether a laptop is in power-saving mode or using integrated graphics instead of the discrete GPU. Then lower resolution or graphics presets, review Vulkan driver selection, disable background recording and overlays, and test frame-rate limits or V-sync. Feral’s Linux FAQ contains release-era graphics and performance notes.
Vulkan errors
Confirm the GPU model, update through Ubuntu’s supported driver path, reboot, and test another Vulkan application. Do not force-install the old NVIDIA or Mesa versions listed in Feral’s 2017 documentation unless you are maintaining a historically matched environment.
The controller or wheel is not detected
Reconnect it, try a wired connection, verify that Ubuntu and Steam see the device, and test Steam Input settings. Compare native and Proton launches because input and force-feedback support may differ.

Advanced Proton logging
For Proton-only diagnosis, add this to the game’s Steam launch options:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
This creates a per-game Proton log using the standard mechanism documented by Valve’s Proton issue tracker. It is not required for normal installation. Before sharing the log, remove usernames, home-directory paths, hardware identifiers, and other personal information.

Feral documents F1 2017 preferences and save files under:
~/.local/share/feral-interactive
The .local directory is hidden in many file managers. Press Ctrl+H to show hidden files. Back up this directory before deleting configuration data or uninstalling if you want to preserve progress. Removing the preferences folder can delete saved progress.
To uninstall through Steam:
- Open Library.
- Right-click F1 2017.

- Confirm the removal.
Multiplayer and Steam Deck expectations
Steam metadata identifies features such as single-player, multiplayer, achievements, Steam Cloud, and leaderboards. That metadata does not guarantee that every online service, matchmaking function, or platform integration remains operational for an older game. Treat online functionality as something to verify on your own installation.
SteamDB records successful SteamOS compatibility data for F1 2017, including controller functionality and a performant recorded configuration. This is useful evidence for Steam Deck users, but it is not the same as a current Valve “Verified” badge and does not prove identical behavior on every Ubuntu desktop.
Legitimate alternatives
If you do not own F1 2017 and it is unavailable through your region’s official Steam storefront, avoid unauthorized mirrors, torrents, cracks, and “abandonware” downloads. Linux-native or open-source racing games may be easier to obtain and maintain, but they will not reproduce F1 2017’s licensed teams, career mode, cars, or handling model. Modern F1 alternatives also require their own current availability and Linux-compatibility checks.
