Yes, ReShade can affect performance—but there is no universal ReShade FPS penalty. The impact usually comes from the effects enabled in your preset, their quality settings, output resolution, depth-buffer access, and whether your PC is already GPU-limited. A few color and sharpening filters may have only a small effect, while ambient occlusion, depth of field, reflections, and multi-pass shaders can add noticeable GPU frame time.

The most reliable way to find your own cost is to compare the game with ReShade removed, ReShade loaded with effects disabled, and your finished preset enabled.

What ReShade actually does

ReShade is a post-processing injector and shader runtime, not a single graphics preset. It hooks into a supported graphics API and applies shader techniques to the game’s rendered image. The official project lists support for Direct3D 9 through Direct3D 12, OpenGL, and Vulkan, along with effects ranging from color correction and sharpening to ambient occlusion, depth of field, and other depth-based techniques. See the official ReShade site for the current project details.

Several parts are easy to confuse:

  • Runtime: The ReShade software loaded by the game.
  • Preset: An .ini file containing enabled effects and their settings.
  • Shader package: The .fx effect files used by the preset.
  • Add-on: Optional functionality that can interact more deeply with rendering resources and events.

A technique can contain one or more rendering passes, and enabled techniques run in the order defined by the effect file. Consequently, a preset containing ten simple effects is not automatically cheaper than one containing two complex multi-pass effects. The ReShade shader reference documents this execution model.

Three different performance scenarios

When people ask whether “ReShade” costs FPS, they may be referring to three different configurations:

Configuration What it tells you
ReShade absent The clean game baseline.
ReShade loaded, effects disabled Much of the runtime, overlay, and configuration overhead without active shader work.
ReShade loaded with a full preset The actual cost of the effects, settings, depth access, and any add-ons you use.

Installing ReShade does not automatically apply a demanding visual preset. However, “no effects enabled” should not be treated as mathematically identical to running without ReShade. The runtime is still loaded, and overlays, add-ons, loading behavior, or depth-related configuration may introduce some work. The difference is normally far smaller than the cost of a heavy preset, but the only dependable answer for a particular game is a controlled comparison.

Which ReShade effects are usually lightweight?

These categories are often relatively inexpensive, especially when implemented as a single pass:

  • Basic color correction, exposure, and contrast adjustment
  • LUT-based color grading
  • Mild sharpening
  • Film grain and vignette
  • Some single-pass anti-aliasing techniques

“Lightweight” does not mean free. Cost still depends on output resolution, texture samples, pass count, implementation, and hardware. Sharpening can also duplicate work already performed by an in-game upscaler or image-sharpening feature. If two filters produce the same visible result, keeping both usually adds cost without adding much image quality.

Which effects are more demanding?

Effects are more likely to be expensive when they use many samples, large kernels, multiple full-screen passes, or additional rendering resources. Common examples include:

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  • High-quality or high-sample ambient occlusion
  • Depth of field and bokeh effects
  • Screen-space reflections
  • Ray-tracing-style lighting or global-illumination shaders
  • Multi-pass blur and bloom effects
  • Effects that run at full resolution with large sampling radii
  • Techniques that repeatedly read or copy depth data

These are tendencies, not universal rankings. A well-optimized effect can be cheaper than a poorly configured alternative, and the same shader may have a very different cost at 1080p and 4K.

Why resolution changes the result

Most post-processing passes examine the output image. At a higher resolution, there are more pixels to process, so the same shader generally has more work to do. A preset that is barely noticeable at 1080p can become a meaningful GPU cost at 1440p or 4K.

Also consider:

  • Native resolution and render scale
  • Dynamic resolution systems
  • DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or another upscaler
  • Ultrawide and multi-monitor output
  • VR’s additional views and render targets

The exact point at which ReShade runs relative to an upscaler can vary by game and graphics API path, so do not assume that every effect processes the same resolution in every title. Depth-based effects can be particularly sensitive to changing render scales or mismatched buffers.

GPU-limited versus CPU-limited games

If your GPU is already near full utilization, adding full-screen shader work is more likely to reduce average FPS or increase GPU frame time. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance describes its normal impact as primarily GPU-heavy, but that is practical guidance rather than a universal cross-game benchmark. See the official troubleshooting guide.

If a game is CPU-limited, ReShade may have less effect on average FPS because the GPU has unused capacity. That does not make every configuration harmless: overlay work, shader compilation, API behavior, or frame-time spikes can still affect smoothness.

Monitor more than the FPS counter:

  • GPU utilization, clock speed, and GPU frame time
  • CPU utilization on individual cores
  • Average FPS, 1% lows, and 0.1% lows
  • Frame-time spikes and pacing
  • VRAM usage
  • Stutter when shaders compile or a preset reloads

Depth-buffer effects have extra complications

Ambient occlusion, depth of field, some reflections, and other effects need depth information. ReShade may need to identify, preserve, or copy the game’s depth buffer before a shader can use it. This can introduce problems that are separate from the shader’s normal arithmetic cost:

  • The wrong depth buffer may be selected.
  • The buffer may be upside down, reversed, or unavailable.
  • MSAA can interfere with depth access.
  • Dynamic resolution and upscalers can change buffer characteristics.
  • The effect may bleed through HUD elements or unsuitable geometry.
  • Additional depth-buffer copies can increase frame time.

ReShade’s 5.2 release notes specifically describe copying the depth buffer during the frame as a costly option in Direct3D 12 and Vulkan, recommending that it remain disabled unless it is needed to correct artifacts. See the 5.2 release notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depth access is also automatically disabled during multiplayer to prevent exploitation, according to ReShade’s official documentation. Network activity can therefore make a depth-based effect flicker or stop working. Do not assume that a depth preset that works in a single-player scene will behave the same way online.

What Performance Mode changes

Performance Mode is useful, but it is not a magic FPS switch. After you finish configuring your preset:

  1. Launch the game and open the ReShade overlay.
  2. Finish choosing effects and adjusting their values.
  3. Open the Settings tab.
  4. Change Usage Mode from configuration mode to Performance Mode.
  5. Save or re-save the preset if your installed version prompts you to do so.
  6. Restart or reload when prompted, then retest the game.

Performance Mode reduces live-editing behavior, treats preset values as constants, and allows stronger shader compiler optimization. The configuration documentation identifies the setting as PerformanceMode=1. It can reduce compilation work and may improve execution, but it cannot make an inherently expensive multi-pass shader free. Return to configuration mode when you need to edit shader parameters. See the ReShade configuration documentation.

How to measure your ReShade performance cost

Use a repeatable A/B test rather than comparing unrelated gameplay sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Establish a clean baseline

  • Disable or remove ReShade.
  • Keep the same game settings, resolution, driver settings, frame-rate cap, and background applications.
  • Use the same save, benchmark, replay, route, or fixed camera path.
  • Record average FPS, 1% lows, and frame time.

2. Test ReShade with effects disabled

Load the same ReShade version and turn off all effects using the global effects toggle. Repeat the identical test. This isolates much of the runtime and overlay behavior from the cost of active shaders.

3. Test effects individually

Enable one effect at a time and record the change in GPU frame time. Test the effects most likely to be expensive first: ambient occlusion, depth of field, reflections, large blurs, and ray-tracing-style techniques. Then enable the complete preset and test it again.

4. Test your real target

Run the test at the resolution and refresh-rate target you actually use. At 60 FPS, one frame takes 16.67 ms. At 144 FPS, one frame takes about 6.94 ms. A 4 ms increase in GPU frame time is therefore a much larger proportion of a 144 Hz frame budget than of a 60 Hz frame budget, even if the visual effect looks identical.

Distinguish sustained performance loss from intermittent spikes. A preset may leave average FPS mostly unchanged while worsening frame-time consistency during compilation, reloads, depth detection, or a particular effect’s expensive pass.

How to reduce ReShade’s performance cost

  1. Disable effects you cannot visibly distinguish. If removing a filter does not improve the image, remove its cost.
  2. Eliminate duplicates. Avoid stacking multiple sharpening, clarity, bloom, or anti-aliasing passes that do similar work.
  3. Lower quality settings. Reduce samples, radius, kernel size, or quality presets in expensive shaders.
  4. Use reduced-resolution modes. If a shader offers half-resolution or similar options, test them.
  5. Remove unnecessary depth effects. Depth-dependent effects are often harder to configure and more expensive.
  6. Disable unnecessary add-ons. Keep only the functionality your preset requires.
  7. Leave costly depth-copy options disabled. Enable them only when they resolve a visible problem, particularly in Direct3D 12 or Vulkan games.
  8. Use Performance Mode after setup. It improves compilation and optimization, but does not replace sensible effect selection.
  9. Test one effect at a time. Isolating the culprit is better than abandoning the entire preset.
  10. Prefer built-in game options when appropriate. An in-game sharpening or color setting may provide a similar result without another injector pass.

Does ReShade cause stutter?

Stutter is not the same as a sustained FPS reduction. Possible causes include:

  • First-run shader compilation
  • Preset reloads or shader parameter changes
  • Many unused effects being loaded
  • Driver shader-cache behavior
  • Overlay and monitoring-tool conflicts
  • Depth-buffer detection or copying
  • A game update that breaks API compatibility
  • An individual shader that occasionally performs an expensive pass

Performance Mode and removing unused effects can improve loading and compilation behavior, but a persistent frame-time problem still requires isolating the active techniques. ReShade’s release notes and troubleshooting material discuss compilation and loading behavior separately from normal rendering cost; see the 3.1 release notes and the troubleshooting guide.

Online play and anti-cheat warning

Use the game’s current support channels or anti-cheat guidance rather than relying on a community report from another title. Depth access may also be disabled during multiplayer, so a visual effect can become unavailable even when the injector itself loads.

What to do if a shader breaks the game

  1. Toggle all effects off and restart the game.
  2. Re-enable effects one at a time to identify the failing shader.
  3. Remove or rename the suspect shader or preset.
  4. If the game will not start, run the ReShade setup tool, select the game executable, choose the relevant graphics API, and use the uninstall or remove option.
  5. Temporarily disable other overlays, capture software, monitoring utilities, and injectors to check for conflicts.
  6. Review the ReShade log and official troubleshooting information before reinstalling everything.

Startup crashes can result from API selection, third-party software conflicts, game updates, or a broken effect—not necessarily from the ReShade runtime alone. The official troubleshooting guidance covers common startup, overlay, compatibility, and removal paths.

Is ReShade worth using?

For most players, the best visual-to-performance trade-off is a restrained preset: color correction, a modest LUT, and perhaps mild sharpening. More ambitious effects can be worthwhile when you have GPU headroom and the improvement is obvious in the games you play.

Be more cautious with depth-heavy effects if you play at high refresh rates, use VR, run at 1440p or 4K, or already operate near full GPU utilization. In online games, compatibility and depth restrictions matter as much as performance. HDR, dynamic resolution, upscaling, and multiple overlays also need title-by-title testing rather than blanket assumptions.

The official site listed ReShade 6.7.3, released February 28, 2026, when checked on August 18, 2026. Version behavior and game compatibility can change, so use the official project site and source repository for current downloads and documentation.
