To fix PS5 controller drift, first restart the console, reset and update the controller, then check whether the problem occurs in one game or everywhere. Carefully clean around the affected stick. If drift continues, check warranty and PlayStation Repairs before opening the controller. A regular DualSense usually needs professional repair, joystick-module replacement, or replacement of the controller; a DualSense Edge has user-replaceable stick modules.
What is PS5 stick drift?
Stick drift happens when a controller reports movement even though you are not touching the analog stick. Your character may walk alone, the camera may turn slowly, menus may scroll, or a vehicle may steer without input. Drift can affect either the left or right stick and may be constant or intermittent.
Possible causes include wear in the joystick’s sensing mechanism, dust or residue, a stick that does not return fully to center, connection or firmware problems, game settings, liquid exposure, impact, or other internal damage. Persistent drift is commonly associated with a worn joystick module, but testing should come before repair. See iFixit’s DualSense drift diagnosis guide.
Quick decision guide
- Drift happens in only one game: Check that game’s deadzone and controller settings.
- Drift happens on the PS5 home screen: Restart, reset, update, test, and clean the controller.
- The controller is under warranty: Contact the retailer or PlayStation Support before opening it.
- You own a DualSense Edge: Replace the affected stick module.
- You own a regular DualSense and drift persists: Use official repair, a reputable repair shop, an advanced soldering repair, or replace the controller.
How to confirm that it is drift
- Open the PS5 home screen and leave the controller untouched for several seconds.
- Watch for automatic menu movement or cursor movement.
- Test another game. Some games use a smaller deadzone and expose minor drift sooner.
- Try a second controller, if available.
- Test both wireless and wired operation using a data-capable USB cable.
- For additional evidence, connect the controller to a computer and use a reputable gamepad tester. A tester can show whether an untouched stick reports nonzero input, but it does not repair or calibrate the controller.
If the issue appears only in one game, look for settings named deadzone, inner deadzone, stick drift correction, or stick sensitivity. Update the game and reset its controller configuration if possible.

Fixes for a regular DualSense
1. Restart the PS5
Turn off the PS5 completely, wait briefly, then start it again. Test the controller before changing settings. This can clear a temporary software or input-state problem, but it cannot repair worn hardware.
2. Reset the controller
Sony’s official reset procedure is:
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the DualSense from the USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back, near the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press the recessed button for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller directly to the PS5 with the official or another known-good data-capable USB cable.
- Press the PS button to pair it again.
Follow Sony’s DualSense reset instructions. Resetting does not erase PS5 console data, but it is not a stick-calibration procedure and is not a guaranteed cure for mechanical drift.
If the controller will not reconnect, try another USB port, connect directly rather than through a hub, and use a cable that supports data rather than charging only. If pairing still fails, use PlayStation Repairs.
3. Update the PS5 and controller
On the PS5, check for console updates at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Updates may resolve compatibility or input-handling problems, but they cannot restore worn electrical contacts or a damaged joystick module.
4. Adjust the game’s deadzone
A deadzone is the amount of movement around the stick’s center that a game ignores. Increasing it can hide mild drift, but it also makes small movements less responsive and can make aiming feel sluggish. Severe drift may remain even at a high setting.
The standard DualSense does not provide the same system-level adjustable deadzone profiles as the DualSense Edge, so this adjustment generally has to be made inside the individual game. Treat it as a temporary workaround, not a hardware repair.

5. Clean around the analog stick
Cleaning may help when dust, grime, or residue is interfering with the stick. It will not reliably fix an internally worn module.
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Move the affected stick slowly through its full range.
- Wipe the stick and surrounding surface with a clean, dry or slightly damp lint-free cloth.
- Apply a small amount of high-percentage isopropyl alcohol to a cotton swab—not directly into the controller—and clean around the stick collar. iFixit suggests 90% isopropyl alcohol for this surface cleaning.
- Let the area dry completely before reconnecting and testing the controller.
Do not pour liquid into the controller, use water inside it, spray unknown cleaners into the electronics, use WD-40 or oily lubricant, force the stick, or blast it with extreme-pressure compressed air. A residue-free electronics cleaner may sometimes help contaminated sensors, but only use a product specifically labeled for electronics and follow its instructions. This is third-party repair guidance, not a general Sony recommendation.

DualSense Edge: replace the stick module
The DualSense Edge differs from the regular DualSense. Its left and right stick modules are removable, interchangeable between sides, and replaceable without desoldering the joystick from the motherboard. Edge modules are not compatible with regular DualSense controllers.
You can also adjust Edge profiles at Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles, then edit Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone. This can reduce mild drift temporarily, but module replacement is the practical fix for a persistent hardware fault.
At a high level, the official replacement process is:
- Turn off the controller.
- Remove or move the stick cap as directed.
- Unlock the release latch.
- Slide out the affected module.
- Insert the replacement module.
- Lock the latch and refit the cap.
- Test the stick and adjust the profile if needed.
Use Sony’s Edge support instructions and verify the replacement at the official Edge stick-module page.
Regular DualSense hardware repair
If reset, updates, testing, and cleaning do not help, the internal joystick assembly may need replacement. On a regular DualSense, this normally requires opening the shell, removing internal parts, desoldering the old module, soldering in a compatible replacement, reassembling the controller, and testing the stick and buttons.

Check warranty before opening the controller
If the controller is less than one year old, contact the retailer or PlayStation Support first. In the United States and Canada, Sony’s accessory warranty provides a one-year warranty for the original purchaser against eligible defects in materials and workmanship, with proof of purchase. Sony may repair or replace an eligible product with a new or factory-recertified unit, subject to exclusions.
The warranty is limited to the United States and Canada. Sony states that customers are responsible for inbound shipping and packaging, while Sony covers return shipping for an eligible repair or replacement. Abuse, neglect, unreasonable use, mistreatment, and non-manufacturing damage may be excluded. Opening the controller can complicate a warranty claim, so use the official warranty terms and PlayStation Repairs before disassembly. Warranty rules vary by country.

| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Restart or reset | Temporary software or pairing problems | Does not repair hardware wear |
| Firmware update | Compatibility or software issues | Cannot restore damaged contacts |
| Game deadzone | Mild drift in supported games | Reduces precision and masks the fault |
| Cleaning | Dust or residue | May be temporary or ineffective |
| Official repair | Warranty or uncertain damage | May involve shipping and waiting |
| DIY module replacement | Experienced electronics hobbyists | Requires soldering and carries damage risk |
| New controller | Fast, predictable results or multiple faults | Highest immediate cost |
Choose official or professional repair if the controller is under warranty, you lack soldering experience, or it has liquid, impact, battery, board, or multiple-component damage. Replacement is more sensible when repair costs approach another controller’s price or you need a reliable controller immediately.

Third-party Hall-effect and TMR modules may have different wear characteristics, but compatibility, calibration, installation quality, firmware behavior, and reliability vary. They are not automatically “drift-proof” and commonly require soldering. Verify model-specific evidence before choosing one.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Liquid entered the controller or visible corrosion appears.
- The stick becomes physically stuck or feels loose, tilted, or damaged.
- Buttons stop working, the controller disconnects, or it becomes unusually hot.
- Both sticks drift and software, game, and connection tests do not explain it.
- A cleaning attempt makes the problem worse.
Disconnect the controller if liquid or electrical damage is suspected. Do not continue spraying or disassembling it; seek professional diagnosis. For intermittent drift, record a short video and note the affected stick, game, connection type, and conditions before contacting support.
Preventing future problems
- Keep hands and the controller clean.
- Store it away from dust and liquids.
- Do not force or sharply flick the sticks.
- Avoid unapproved chemicals and oily lubricants.
- Use a case or protected storage during transport.
- Address intermittent drift early, especially before the warranty period ends.
These habits may reduce contamination and physical stress, but they cannot guarantee that a joystick module will never wear out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calibrate a regular PS5 DualSense controller?
The regular DualSense has no official user-accessible stick-calibration or replaceable-module procedure. You can test it, adjust a game’s deadzone, or seek repair, but a deadzone is not calibration.
Can I replace a DualSense joystick without soldering?
Not normally. Replacing the internal joystick module in a standard DualSense generally requires disassembly and soldering. The DualSense Edge is different because its stick modules are designed to be removed and replaced.
Is WD-40 safe for PS5 controller drift?
No. Do not use WD-40 or oily lubricants inside a DualSense. Use only carefully applied, electronics-labeled products when appropriate, and keep liquid away from the circuitry.
Does opening a DualSense automatically void the warranty?
Do not assume an absolute rule, but opening the controller may complicate a warranty claim. Contact the retailer or PlayStation Support first, especially for a controller still within its applicable warranty period.
