Short answer: an OBB file is not an app and cannot be installed like an APK. Install the matching APK in BlueStacks 5 first, then copy the OBB—without renaming it—to Android/obb/<package-name>/ inside the same BlueStacks Android instance. BlueStacks 5 documents APK and XAPK installation, but it does not generally provide a universal one-click “Import OBB” button.
The procedure works only when the APK and OBB belong to the same app build and are compatible with the selected Android instance. If the game uses newer asset-delivery technology, requires Google Play licensing, or has incompatible architecture or graphics requirements, manually copying an OBB may not work.
What is an OBB file?
OBB is Android’s traditional expansion-file format for large app data. A game may use an OBB for textures, audio, video, maps, 3D models, and other resources too large to include conveniently in the APK.
The Android expansion-file model treats the APK as the installable application and the OBB as supplemental data. The files must normally use the same application package and compatible version. The legacy format supports one main expansion file and one patch expansion file, with each file limited to 2 GB.

Typical names look like this:
main.<version-code>.<package-name>.obb
patch.<version-code>.<package-name>.obbFor example, an OBB named main.123456.com.example.game.obb normally belongs in:
Android/obb/com.example.game/Do not assume every modern Android game uses OBB files. Google Play increasingly uses Android App Bundles and newer asset-delivery systems, so some current games have no manually usable OBB.
Before you begin
- BlueStacks 5: install and launch it. BlueStacks offers different Android configurations, including options such as Nougat 64-bit, Android 11, and Android 13; the right choice depends on the app’s Android version, CPU architecture, graphics requirements, and Play compatibility. - A matching APK and OBB: the package name, version, architecture, and build must agree.
- Enough storage: reserve space for the APK, OBB, temporary copies or extraction, and later updates.
- The exact package name: this is an identifier such as
com.example.game, not the game’s marketing title. - A trustworthy, legally obtained package: manual placement does not bypass licensing, DRM, anti-cheat, region restrictions, or Google Play requirements.
Check the package name first
The package name must match in three places:
- The APK’s manifest or legitimate listing.
- The package-name portion of the OBB filename.
- The destination folder under
Android/obb/.
For this example:
APK application ID: com.example.game
OBB filename: main.123456.com.example.game.obb
Required folder: Android/obb/com.example.game/You can inspect the OBB filename, check the developer or Play listing, use an APK information tool, or inspect the APK manifest with Android tooling. Do not infer the identifier from the game’s title; similarly named games can have completely different package names.
The easier option: install an XAPK
If you have a trustworthy XAPK containing the APK and its expansion data, try that before performing a manual copy. XAPK is a distribution convention that commonly bundles an APK with OBB data, although not every XAPK is structured identically.

BlueStacks 5’s current documentation covers installation from Google Play, the BlueStacks Store, APK files, and XAPK files. Use Install APK from the side toolbar, select the XAPK, and follow the prompts. Dragging an APK or XAPK onto the BlueStacks window is also supported. Interface labels can change between BlueStacks releases; consult the current BlueStacks 5 instructions.
APKS and APKM files are different split-package formats. They may require a compatible split-package installer and should not automatically be treated as ordinary APK files.
Manual APK-plus-OBB installation on BlueStacks 5
1. Install the APK
- Launch BlueStacks 5.
- Click Install APK on the side toolbar.
- Select the APK on Windows or macOS and click Open.
- Wait for the app icon to appear on the BlueStacks home screen.
You can also drag the APK onto the BlueStacks window. Do not continue to the OBB step until the APK itself installs successfully.
2. Launch the app once, then close it
Open the app briefly. It may create its storage structure or show a missing-data message. Close it fully before transferring the OBB; do not copy data while the game is running. This can help avoid a file-locking or initialization conflict, but it does not guarantee that the directory will be created automatically.

3. Import the OBB into BlueStacks
Use System apps → Media Manager, then choose Import From Windows to bring the file into BlueStacks. BlueStacks documents Media Manager as a file and media-transfer tool, not as an automatic OBB registrar. Importing the file is only the transfer step.
Depending on your release and Android instance, you may need an Android file manager to move the imported file into the application’s expansion directory. The available file-manager apps and visible paths can differ.
4. Move the file to the required directory
- Open a file manager inside BlueStacks that can browse shared internal storage.
- Locate the imported OBB.
- Create the folder
Android/obb/<package-name>/if it does not exist. - Move or copy the OBB into that folder.
- Keep the original filename and extension.
The standard Android location may appear as either:
/sdcard/Android/obb/com.example.game/main.123456.com.example.game.obbor:
/storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/com.example.game/main.123456.com.example.game.obbThese commonly represent the same shared internal storage rather than two separate destinations. Android 11 and later storage restrictions can prevent some file managers from writing freely to Android/obb. If the file manager cannot complete the move, use Google Play, a supported XAPK workflow, or another compatible BlueStacks instance instead of weakening security settings.

5. Verify the path and filename
Before launching the app, check all of the following:
- The folder name exactly matches the APK package name.
- The filename begins with
mainorpatch. - The version-code component matches the APK build.
- The package name at the end of the filename is correct.
- The extension is exactly
.obb, not.obb.zip. - Windows has not hidden or added an extra extension.
- The file is not inside an extra nested folder.
An OBB may be internally ZIP-formatted, but it should normally remain a single .obb file. Do not rename it to .zip or extract it unless the specific package’s instructions explicitly require that.
6. Launch and test the game
- Start the app.
- Wait for its initial verification.
- Allow it to download only genuinely missing files.
- Test beyond the title screen by loading a level or feature that uses the large assets.
If the game still reports missing data, stop and check the package, version, path, and file integrity instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated files.

Advanced users can use Android Debug Bridge to copy the OBB into the emulator. The active BlueStacks instance, ADB endpoint, permissions, and accessible destination vary by release, so there is no single reliable hard-coded BlueStacks port or command for every installation.

Confirm that the intended BlueStacks device appears in adb devices; a plain adb push can fail when no instance is connected or when Android storage permissions block the destination. For most users, an in-emulator file manager is simpler. BlueStacks’ official Media Manager documentation confirms file importing, but does not establish a universal ADB-based OBB procedure.
Troubleshooting

When manual OBB placement will not work
Correct placement is necessary but not sufficient. The method may fail when:
- The APK and OBB use different package names, version codes, regions, signatures, or builds.
- The APK targets an unsupported CPU architecture or Android version.
- The game requires Google Play Services, Play licensing, or an account-based entitlement.
- The game uses Play Asset Delivery or another modern system instead of legacy OBB expansion files.
- The OBB is incomplete, corrupt, encrypted for a different build, or still compressed in an archive.
- The game’s graphics requirements are incompatible with the selected BlueStacks instance.
- Anti-cheat, anti-tamper, DRM, or emulator-detection mechanisms reject the environment.
Moving an OBB is not a workaround for licensing, DRM, anti-cheat, or regional restrictions.
BlueStacks 4 versus BlueStacks 5
BlueStacks maintains older BlueStacks 4 support material, including OBB-specific instructions. Those pages can be useful for legacy installations, but their menus, file paths, and transfer workflow should not be presented as the current BlueStacks 5 procedure. For BlueStacks 5, rely on the current APK/XAPK installation documentation and treat Media Manager as a way to transfer files—not proof that an OBB has been registered automatically.
For the safest route, use Google Play inside BlueStacks when the game is available. Next, try the BlueStacks Store or an official developer-distributed APK/XAPK. Use manual APK-plus-OBB placement only when you know the files are compatible and legally obtained.
