The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is already released, not an upcoming rumor. MSI lists it under the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM family, with an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, 80Wh battery, Windows 11 Home, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The often-reported retail launch date is January 15, 2025, but availability varied by region. Do not confuse this model with the newer 2026 Claw 8 EX AI+, which uses different Intel graphics hardware.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ release date
MSI officially announced the Claw 8 AI+ as available now. That establishes it as a commercially released handheld, although the exact announcement, preorder, and in-store dates differed between markets. January 15, 2025 is widely reported as the retail launch date, but it should be treated as a reported date rather than a universal launch date for every country.
Availability, pricing, included accessories, warranty coverage, and even memory or storage can vary by regional SKU. Before buying, check the model number on the retailer page or box. The main family designation is A2VM. MSI’s official announcement is available on its product availability page.
Price and availability: check the exact SKU
There is no single current worldwide price that can safely be applied to every Claw 8 AI+ listing. The device is an older generation relative to the Claw 8 EX AI+, so clearance pricing and remaining stock may differ sharply by country. A marketplace listing above the original retail price does not prove that it launched at that price.

Processor and gaming performance
The Claw 8 AI+ is built around Intel’s Lunar Lake-based Core Ultra 7 258V. Its Arc graphics are integrated into the processor platform, so calling it a handheld with a dedicated graphics card would be incorrect.
Performance depends on the selected power mode, game, resolution, cooling profile, drivers, memory configuration, and whether the system is plugged in. MSI’s performance-improvement claims should therefore be read as results from specified test conditions, not as a guarantee for every game.
The 8-inch screen runs at 1920×1200, which is sharper and more spacious than many smaller handheld displays but also more demanding. In modern AAA games, lowering the resolution or using an in-game upscaler may produce a better balance than rendering at native resolution. A 120Hz panel means the display can refresh up to 120 times per second; it does not mean demanding games will consistently reach 120 frames per second.
Display: a major reason to choose it
- 8 inches: More comfortable for strategy games, simulations, text-heavy interfaces, and remote play.
- 16:10: Provides more vertical workspace than a 16:9 panel.
- 120Hz and VRR: VRR can make fluctuating frame rates look smoother within the panel’s supported range.
- 500 nits and 100% sRGB: Useful for bright rooms and broadly covered standard color, based on MSI’s typical ratings.
- Touch input: Helpful for Windows navigation and games designed around mouse interfaces.
MSI describes the panel as “IPS-level,” not OLED. Buyers prioritizing OLED contrast and black levels should look elsewhere.
80Wh battery: excellent capacity, variable runtime
The 80Wh battery is one of the Claw 8 AI+’s strongest specifications and is unusually large for a Windows gaming handheld. It is still a capacity figure, not a guaranteed number of gaming hours.
Runtime changes with game load, processor power limit, screen brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, wireless radios, fan mode, and Windows background activity. Demanding native PC games at high power can drain the battery quickly; lower-power games, emulation, streaming, and desktop work should be less demanding. Do not transfer runtime claims for the newer EX AI+ to this model.
What “AI+” means
The AI+ branding refers to the platform’s NPU, AI acceleration, and MSI software features. MSI also markets Copilot+ PC-related capabilities and includes tools such as MSI Center M and MSI AI Engine for handheld controls and tuning.
NPU TOPS are not equivalent to gaming GPU performance. The AI label does not automatically increase frame rates, and it should not outweigh practical factors such as battery capacity, drivers, display quality, controls, software, and price.
Rank #2
- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V – AI-Powered Efficiency: Next-gen Series 2 processor delivers 50% better GPU performance and 40% higher efficiency. 47 NPU TOPS accelerate local AI tasks – from Copilot+ to real-time game optimization.
- 8" 120Hz VRR Touch Display: FHD+ IPS screen with 500 nits sunlight readability. 16:10 golden ratio and VRR support eliminate tearing. Perfect for AAA gaming, streaming, or productivity on the go.
- 80Whr Battery + Fast Charge: Massive 80Whr capacity beats most handhelds. Fast charge gets you back in action quickly. Game longer, worry less – whether on a flight or a long commute.
- Revolutionary Intraflow Cooling: Redesigned airflow keeps internal components cool, preventing thermal throttling. Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers offer drift-free, microscopic precision – built to last.
- Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
Ports and docking
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports make the Claw 8 AI+ unusually flexible as a handheld PC. They can be used for charging, external displays, high-speed storage, USB hubs, and desktop peripherals. MSI also promotes a docking station with HDMI 2.0 output up to 4K at 60Hz. The dock is optional and is not necessary for ordinary handheld play.

| Area | Claw 8 AI+ | Original Claw |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 8-inch, 1920×1200, up to 120Hz, VRR | 7-inch class display |
| Processor platform | Core Ultra 7 258V generation | Earlier Core Ultra platform |
| Battery | 80Wh | Smaller battery |
| Memory and storage | Common listings include 32GB and 1TB | Configuration varies by model |
| Connectivity | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports | Verify the exact original model and region |
| Controls | Hall-effect sticks and triggers on listed specifications | Earlier control hardware |

The Claw 8 AI+ is not simply the original Claw with a larger panel. It combines a newer processor platform, a much larger battery, a larger 16:10 screen, and revised controls. However, its value depends on the price gap between old stock, newer MSI models, and AMD-based rivals.
Claw 8 AI+ versus Claw 8 EX AI+
The Claw 8 EX AI+ is a separate, newer 2026 product. It should not be used as a source for the original model’s processor, graphics, price, or battery-runtime claims.
| Feature | Claw 8 AI+ | Claw 8 EX AI+ |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | A2VM model | Newer 2026 EX model |
| Platform | Intel Core Ultra 7 258V with integrated Arc graphics | Intel Arc G3 Extreme platform |
| Display | 8-inch, 1920×1200, 120Hz, VRR | 8-inch, 1920×1200, 120Hz, VRR |
| Battery | 80Wh | 80Wh-class capacity as marketed by MSI |
| Connectivity | Dual Thunderbolt 4 | Dual Thunderbolt 4 |
| Positioning | Earlier premium handheld | Newer, higher-end alternative |
MSI’s EX AI+ announcement identifies it as a different device. Secondary reporting placed the EX AI+ around $1,799 in the US, but that figure belongs to the EX model and must not be presented as the Claw 8 AI+’s price.

How it compares with alternatives
There is no universal winner because these devices prioritize different things:
- ASUS ROG Ally X: A strong AMD-based Windows alternative with broad support and availability. Compare current pricing, battery, memory, display, ports, and performance rather than launch specifications. See the official page.
- Lenovo Legion Go: Attractive if you want a large display and distinctive detachable-controller design. Confirm the exact generation and processor before comparing it with the Claw 8 AI+. See Lenovo’s official listing.
- Steam Deck OLED: Better suited to buyers who value SteamOS and a more console-like interface. It is not a direct specification match: its operating system, display technology, performance envelope, and compatibility differ. See the official page.
- Newer MSI Claw models: The EX AI+ offers a newer Intel platform, but its premium price can make a discounted A2VM more appealing.
Should you buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
Buy it if you find the A2VM at a substantial discount and value its 8-inch 16:10 display, 80Wh battery, Windows flexibility, Hall-effect controls, and dual Thunderbolt 4 ports. It is particularly appealing for strategy games, simulations, RPGs, indie games, emulation, remote play, and desktop use.
Compare carefully if its price approaches the Claw 8 EX AI+. The newer model uses a different graphics platform, so the older AI+ needs a meaningful price advantage.
Skip it if you want maximum performance per dollar, OLED image quality, or the simplest console-like experience. A discounted AMD handheld may be a better gaming value, while the Steam Deck OLED is a better fit for buyers who specifically prefer SteamOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to verify a listing or your own unit
- Confirm that the model number says Claw 8 AI+ A2VM, not Claw 8 EX AI+, the original Claw, or another Claw variant.
- Check the listing’s exact RAM, SSD, color, charger, warranty region, and return policy.
- On the device, open Settings → System → About to check the processor and installed memory.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display to check available refresh rates.
- Use Task Manager → Performance to inspect memory, GPU, and storage.
- Use MSI Center M to check performance mode, fan behavior, device settings, and updates.
Windows and MSI Center M labels can vary by software version, so treat these as general paths rather than permanent interface guarantees.
