To stop Steam from opening when you sign in, open Steam > Settings > Interface, turn off Run Steam when my computer starts, then exit Steam and restart your computer. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, also check Settings > Apps > Startup and disable Steam there if it is listed.
Turn off Steam’s startup setting
- Open Steam.
- Click Steam in the top-left menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Interface.
- Turn off or uncheck Run Steam when my computer starts.
- Choose Steam > Exit so the client closes completely.
- Restart your computer and check whether Steam opens after you sign in.
The control may appear as a checkbox or toggle, and its styling can vary between Steam client versions. The current menu location and wording are documented by SEGA Support; Steam also provides a startup troubleshooting FAQ.
This setting only prevents automatic launching. It does not uninstall Steam, remove your games, delete your account, or stop you from opening Steam manually.
Disable Steam in Windows Startup apps
Steam’s preference and Windows’ startup registration are separate control points. If Steam still starts, check Windows directly.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Find Steam, Steam Client Bootstrapper, or a related Steam entry.
- Switch it to Off.
Microsoft documents this route for managing registered startup applications. Disabling Steam may reduce activity during sign-in, but the effect on startup time depends on your hardware, Windows state, and other programs.
Use Task Manager if Settings does not work
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Task Manager.
- Open Startup apps. In some Windows layouts, you may need to expand Task Manager first.
- Select Steam or its related startup entry.
- Choose Disable.
Task Manager provides another way to manage the Windows startup-app list and can show startup-impact information. It is not a replacement for checking Steam’s own Interface setting; when troubleshooting, check both.
Steam still opens? Find the remaining startup trigger
Work through these checks in order:
- Recheck Steam. Open Steam > Settings > Interface and confirm that Run Steam when my computer starts remains off.
- Recheck Windows. Look in Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s Startup apps list.
- Inspect the current-user Startup folder. Press Win + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. Remove or move a Steam shortcut only if you recognize it and are sure it is responsible. - Inspect the all-users Startup folder. Press Win + R, enter
shell:common startup, and check for a Steam shortcut. This may require administrator permission. - Look for another launcher. A game launcher, peripheral utility, backup tool, security program, scheduled task, or shortcut with launch arguments may be invoking Steam.
- Test after a full restart. Some launchers start with a delay, so do not assume the problem is solved merely because Steam was absent immediately after sign-in.
Microsoft identifies the Startup folders and additional registry startup locations, including:
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
Registry editing should be an advanced last resort, not the first fix. If you inspect the registry, export or back up the relevant key before making any change. Microsoft warns that incorrect registry modifications can have unintended consequences. Do not delete arbitrary values or use a registry-cleaning utility simply to stop Steam.

If Steam opens several minutes after startup
A delayed launch points to a different trigger than Steam’s immediate login startup. Check scheduled tasks, third-party launchers, Steam shortcuts, and utilities that integrate with games or controllers. If Steam returns after a client update, recheck both Steam’s Interface setting and Windows’ startup list.
On a work or school computer, an administrator policy may control startup behavior. Multiple Windows accounts can also have different per-user startup entries, while an all-users shortcut can affect everyone who signs in.
Use a clean boot only to diagnose conflicts
If Steam’s setting, Windows Startup apps, and the Startup folders do not explain the launch, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help identify whether another service or startup program is responsible. It uses System Configuration to hide Microsoft services, disables non-Microsoft services, and then disables startup items through Task Manager.
A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a normal Steam fix. It can temporarily remove functionality, so restore the original settings after identifying the conflicting program. Do not routinely choose “Disable all” or change advanced boot options without understanding what will be disabled. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.

Stop Steam from opening on Mac
macOS manages login applications separately from Windows. Steam’s own option may still be available:
- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings or Steam > Preferences, depending on the client presentation.
- Open Interface.
- Turn off Run Steam when my computer starts, if the option is present.
- If Steam still launches, open System Settings > General > Login Items.
- Remove Steam from the applications allowed to open at login.
Apple’s menu labels can change between major macOS releases. If your Mac uses older system software, the equivalent controls may appear under the older System Preferences interface.
Do you want Steam disabled or just hidden?
- No automatic launch: Disable Steam’s startup setting and its Windows or macOS login-item entry.
- Launch minimized: Keep startup enabled but use Steam’s available minimize or background behavior if you want the client ready without a large window.
- Steam in the tray: A missing window does not necessarily mean Steam is stopped; background processes may still be running.
- Steam starts when a game launches: Many Steam games open the client when required. That is different from Steam launching at computer sign-in.
Disabling startup means Steam will not be ready immediately for games, controller workflows, updates, or cloud-related activity. Those functions can begin when you open Steam manually. Leaving it enabled but minimized is more convenient, but Steam and its related processes still run in the background.

Steam is disabled in Windows but still opens: Check Steam’s Interface setting and the Startup folders, then investigate scheduled tasks or another application.

Steam is not listed in Startup apps: It may be launched from shell:startup, shell:common startup, a registry location, a scheduled task, or another launcher.
Steam appears only in the notification area: It may be starting silently or minimized. If you want Steam not to run at all, disable startup rather than only hiding the window.
You cannot open Steam to change its preference: Use Windows Startup apps or Task Manager first. There is no need to delete Steam files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling Steam startup affect my installed games?
No. It only stops Steam from launching automatically. You can open Steam and play normally whenever you choose.
How do I re-enable Steam startup?
Open Steam, go to Steam > Settings > Interface, and turn on Run Steam when my computer starts. If you disabled it in Windows, also switch its Startup entry back on.
Why does Steam open after I launch a game?
A game may require the Steam client, so Steam can open when that game starts even when automatic login startup is disabled.
