Yes—you can use Unreal Engine to make and publish Android games and apps. The important distinction is that you normally run the Unreal Editor on Windows, macOS, or Linux, then deploy the project to Android phones and tablets. You do not generally install the full Unreal Editor on an Android device.
Epic’s Android documentation identifies Unreal Engine 5.8 as the current release in its August 16, 2026 documentation snapshot. UE 5.8 supports Android development, real-device deployment, APK packaging, Android App Bundles, Google Play integrations, and mobile profiling.
What “using Unreal Engine on Android” means
There are three different questions hidden in this phrase:
- Can you develop an Android game with Unreal Engine? Yes.
- Can you run an Unreal-made game or app on Android? Yes, if the device and project meet the relevant requirements.
- Can you run the full Unreal Editor directly on an Android phone or tablet? That is not the normal supported workflow. The editor is a desktop development tool.
Android can also be used as a target for specialized XR and standalone-headset projects, but those require additional device and SDK configuration.

Android requirements for Unreal Engine 5.8
Epic’s documented UE 5.8 baseline includes the following:
| Component | Documented requirement |
|---|---|
| Android version | Android 8 or later |
| CPU | 64-bit Arm-based processor |
| Graphics | OpenGL ES 3.2, or Vulkan 1.1 on Android 10 or later with compatible drivers |
| Recommended target SDK | SDK 35 |
| Minimum compilation target | SDK 34 |
| Minimum install SDK level | SDK 26 |
| Android NDK | r27c |
| Build tools | 35.0.1 |
| Java | OpenJDK 21.0.3 |
| Android Studio | Koala 2024.1.2 Patch 1 |
These are engine-version-specific requirements, not universal Android requirements. Check Epic’s documentation again when using another Unreal release: UE 5.8 Android development requirements.
The minimums also do not mean that every Android phone will run every Unreal project well. High-resolution textures, expensive materials, advanced lighting, post-processing, large shader permutations, and complex scenes can require substantially newer hardware. A compatible phone may still deliver poor frame rates, overheat, run out of memory, or fail to support a particular feature.

- Open the Unreal Editor.
- Select Platforms > SDK Management > Android > Install SDK.
- Follow the prompts.
Turnkey can install Android Studio when needed, download the command-line tools, install the matching SDK, NDK, and JDK, and configure relevant environment variables. Android Studio is supporting Android tooling; it is not a replacement for the Unreal Editor.
Manual setup is useful for CI machines, multiple Unreal installations, pinned build environments, or diagnosing Java, Gradle, SDK-path, and plugin conflicts. If Turnkey fails, compare every installed component with Epic’s requirements for your exact engine version rather than mixing the newest available tools indiscriminately. See Epic’s Android support documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Create an Android-ready Unreal project
Epic’s recommended beginner setup is:
- Open the Unreal Project Browser and select Games.
- Choose a template.
- Select Blueprint or C++.
- Set Target Platform to Mobile.
- Set Quality Preset to Scalable.
- Name and create the project.
Mobile selects mobile-oriented defaults and previews. Scalable gives you a sensible starting point across different Android hardware, but it does not automatically optimize the finished game. You still need to establish device tiers and test on physical phones.
Configure Android project settings
- Open Edit > Project Settings.
- Go to Platforms > Android.
- Under APK Packaging, set a unique Android package name, such as
com.example.mygame. - Set the minimum SDK and target SDK values appropriate for the engine release and distribution channel.
- Select Configure Now if Unreal reports that Android is not configured.
- Accept the SDK license if prompted.
- Configure Google Play Services only if the project uses them.
For UE 5.8, Epic’s example uses minimum SDK 26 and target SDK 35. Treat those as documented examples and current requirements, not values to copy blindly into every future engine version or store configuration. The exact setup is covered in Epic’s Android Quick Start.
Test an Unreal project on a real Android phone
Prepare the phone
- Enable Developer Mode by tapping Build number seven times in Android Settings.
- Open Developer Options.
- Enable USB debugging.
- Connect the phone to the computer by USB.
- Approve the computer’s USB-debugging authorization prompt.
- Install any required device drivers.
USB is the best first-deployment route because it makes authorization and connection problems easier to diagnose.
Deploy from Unreal
- Open the Platforms dropdown in the Unreal Editor.
- Find the device under Quick Launch Current Level.
- Select the device.
Unreal cooks the content, packages the project, installs it, and attempts to launch it. If automatic launch fails, find the installed app on the phone and open it manually. A device appearing in ADB does not guarantee that cooking, installation, rendering, or launch will succeed.

An emulator can help with basic UI checks and automation, but it cannot replace physical-device testing for GPU drivers, frame rate, touch input, sensors, thermals, battery use, memory behavior, and release builds.
Package an Android build
Local APK testing
For a standalone test build, use:
- Select Platforms > Package Project > Android.
- Choose Android (Multi:ASTC,DXT,ETC2).
- Select Platforms > Package Project > Package Project.
- Choose an output folder.
Epic’s Quick Start describes an APK and OBB output for this workflow, along with scripts that can install or remove the build from a connected device. An APK is convenient for local installation and testing.
Google Play distribution
Google Play is a separate release workflow. Modern Play distribution generally uses an Android App Bundle, not a single universal APK uploaded for every device. You also need a signed release, a valid package identifier, compatible native libraries, appropriate permissions, configured billing or Play services where applicable, and testing across your supported device range.
Epic states that new apps and updates targeting Google Play must target Android 15/API 35 from August 31, 2025, and that UE 5.7 or newer is required for that target support. UE 5.8 is therefore the safer starting point for a new project under the documented requirements. Google’s Unreal on Android guide covers App Bundles, Play Asset Delivery, Play Integrity, in-app updates, reviews, and Play Billing.
Vulkan, OpenGL ES, and mobile rendering
Unreal supports Vulkan and OpenGL ES 3.2 on Android. If both are enabled, Vulkan is preferred and OpenGL ES 3.2 can provide a fallback on suitable devices.
Enable or review the setting at Project Settings > Platforms > Android > Build > Support Vulkan. Vulkan is not automatically faster or more reliable on every phone: driver quality and GPU behavior vary. OpenGL ES can improve device reach, but it may not provide identical features or performance. Test both paths if your audience includes a wide range of devices.

- Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Renderer compatibility is also separate from project performance. A phone may support Vulkan yet struggle with your materials, lighting, texture memory, or post-processing.
Android 15 and 16 KB memory pages
Android 15 and later can run on devices using either 4 KB or 16 KB memory pages. Google’s Unreal guidance says Unreal Engine 5.6 and later support 16 KB page sizes.
This matters particularly when upgrading an older project or using native plugins and third-party libraries. Engine support does not guarantee that every native dependency supports 16 KB pages. Validate plugins and native libraries independently before release. See Google’s Android guidance for Unreal.

Turnkey cannot install the SDK
- Confirm the exact Unreal version.
- Compare the required SDK, NDK, build-tools, and Java versions with Epic’s requirements page.
- Retry with appropriate installation permissions.
- Check that Unreal’s SDK, NDK, and JDK paths point to the intended versions.
- Use Epic’s manual Android SDK setup if Turnkey cannot manage the environment.
- Avoid silently sharing incompatible toolchain paths between different Unreal installations.
The phone is connected but Unreal cannot deploy
- Confirm USB debugging is enabled.
- Unlock the phone and accept the computer-authorization prompt.
- Try another USB cable or port.
- Install the device’s required desktop driver.
- Check whether the device is visible to ADB.
- Verify that the package name and Android configuration are valid.
The phone is Android but is reported as unsupported
Possible causes include a 32-bit rather than 64-bit Arm CPU, an unsupported GPU, an old Android version, an incompatible Vulkan driver, or project features unavailable on that device. The documented UE baseline is not a promise that every project will run acceptably.
The app crashes at startup
Investigate the rendering API and driver first, then check native plugin ABI and 16 KB page-size compatibility, manifest permissions, memory use, shader or pipeline issues, package configuration, signing, and asset-delivery settings. Compare Development and Shipping builds and use Android Studio logs and Unreal’s Android debugging tools instead of relying only on editor preview.
The game runs but performs badly
Profile CPU, GPU, memory, startup time, frame pacing, and battery or thermal behavior on representative devices. Common improvements include reducing draw calls, mesh complexity, material IDs, texture resolution, shader permutations, and boot-time work. Use mobile-appropriate lighting and effects, and create quality tiers rather than assuming one setting fits every phone.

Can Unreal use Android-specific services?
Yes. Epic’s Android support materials include integrations and guides for Google Play Asset Delivery, Play Integrity, in-app updates, in-app reviews, Google Play Billing, frame pacing, AdMob ads, achievements, and leaderboards.
These features are not necessarily one-click additions. They can require credentials, Google Play Console configuration, testing tracks, manifest settings, platform-specific code, and additional validation on real devices.
Is Unreal Engine a good choice for Android?
Unreal is a strong fit for ambitious 3D Android games, cross-platform projects, and teams already using Blueprints, C++, or Unreal’s asset and profiling tools. It is less attractive when the target is very low-end hardware, the game is a small 2D project, download size and startup time must be extremely small, or the team lacks a desktop development machine.
The central trade-off is visual ambition versus device reach. High-end features can make a project look better while reducing the number of Android devices that can run it well. Unreal is viable on Android, but mobile development requires deliberate content budgets, device tiers, profiling, and release testing.
Cost and licensing
Epic’s licensing terms depend on the product category and revenue. Epic describes Unreal as free for game developers under its stated threshold, with a 5% royalty on lifetime gross revenue above $1 million directly attributable to the Unreal product. Epic also lists a $1,850-per-seat annual license for qualifying non-game commercial use. These terms can change and may vary by license category, so review the current Unreal Engine license terms before releasing a commercial product.
For a small 2D Android game, Godot may be worth evaluating because it is free and open source under the MIT license. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Unreal’s high-end 3D pipeline, so the choice should follow the project’s graphics, platform, team, and licensing requirements. See the Godot license.
