Google Play Games Sidekick is an in-game Android overlay that can put Gemini-powered help, screenshots, recording, livestreaming, achievements, quests and rewards on top of supported games. It is not a standalone Gemini gaming app, and it does not work automatically in every Android game.
The biggest limitation is availability: Google’s current documentation places Gemini Live with Early Access Partners, while Game Tips are limited to selected titles and languages in an Early Access program. Sidekick itself is broader than its AI features, but eligibility depends on the game, developer, device and account.
What is Google Play Games Sidekick?
Play Games Sidekick is a Google Play Games Services overlay that appears inside supported games installed from Google Play. A movable handle or tab lets players open gaming tools without switching to Search, YouTube, a wiki or another device. The overlay can be dismissed and reopened through the game or related notifications, although the exact player-facing controls may vary by device, Android build and Play Games version.
Google announced Sidekick on September 23, 2025, demonstrating Gemini Live with The Battle of Polytopia. The concept was simple: share the game screen with Gemini, ask a spoken question and receive advice about what is visible. Since then, Sidekick has also developed into a broader Play Games platform layer rather than merely a Gemini feature.

Google’s official documentation describes Sidekick as part of the Play Games ecosystem, not as a universal Android gaming mode. It therefore should not be confused with opening the ordinary Gemini Android overlay over any app. The standard Gemini overlay is a general-purpose assistant; Sidekick is game-specific and can include Play Games progression, rewards and developer-configured content.

What can Sidekick do?
The feature list is divided between AI assistance and conventional Play Games tools. What appears in the overlay varies by title and by the services its developer has enabled.
Gemini features
- Gemini Live: a conversational assistant that can use screen sharing to interpret visible gameplay and respond to spoken questions.
- Game Tips: quick AI-powered or AI-generated recommendations presented within Sidekick. Google says these are available only for selected titles and languages through Early Access.
Gemini Live is intended for interactive, context-aware help rather than a static search result. A player might ask what an on-screen item does, what objective appears to be active or what strategy could help with the visible situation. But Google has not positioned it as a guaranteed walkthrough or an expert replacement for every game guide.

This broader list matters because calling Sidekick simply “Gemini for games” leaves out much of the product. Google is also using the overlay to keep players connected to Play Games identity, rewards and developer services while they play.
How Gemini helps during gameplay
Gemini Live can interpret the shared screen
In the original demonstration, Gemini Live used screen sharing to see the game and provide spoken advice. That makes it different from asking a general assistant an isolated question with no visual context. The assistant can respond to what appears to be happening on the display and continue a conversation as the player asks follow-up questions.
However, screen understanding is not the same as access to the game’s internal state. Gemini does not automatically gain direct knowledge of hidden variables, server-side events, undisplayed objectives, exact drop tables or every rule stored inside the game. Its understanding is based on the context it receives and the information it can infer.

That creates practical limits. It may misread small text, confuse similar characters or items, misunderstand a rapidly changing scene or apply advice from the wrong game mode. It can also provide a plausible-sounding answer that is simply wrong. In competitive games, a player should verify important advice rather than treat conversational confidence as proof.
Game Tips are quicker, narrower assistance
Game Tips are designed to deliver hints and situational guidance in Sidekick. They may be more convenient than searching for a basic answer, particularly when the player wants to remain in the game. They should not be described as complete, authoritative walkthroughs. For a full build, map, quest chain, collectible route, frame-data reference or exact damage calculation, a detailed human-written guide remains the safer choice.
Which games support Sidekick?
Sidekick is available only in participating or supported Play Store games. Early launch examples included EA and Netmarble titles such as Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, EA SPORTS FC Mobile and Solo Leveling: ARISE. The Battle of Polytopia was used in Google’s Gemini Live demonstration.
Those examples are not a permanent or complete compatibility list. A game from one of those publishers is not automatically guaranteed to include Sidekick or Gemini Live, and Sidekick availability does not mean every supported title has every Gemini feature.
Google reported Sidekick in more than 90 titles in its Q1 2026 update and more than 100 titles in a May 2026 Google Play update. Those figures describe the broader Sidekick rollout. They should not be read as meaning that Gemini Live was available in all of those games.
Who can use it?
Google’s current Sidekick documentation lists these requirements:
- Android 13 or newer
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- A Google Gamer profile
- A game installed from Google Play
These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that the overlay will appear. The title must support or enable the relevant Play Games integration, and the feature may still be limited by rollout stage, region, account, developer configuration or Early Access eligibility. Google also says its performance testing is continuing, so hardware requirements may evolve.

Games installed through another distribution channel, including sideloaded games, should not be expected to provide the same Sidekick experience. A compatible phone alone is not enough.
How to check whether Sidekick works on your phone
- Confirm that the device runs Android 13 or newer and meets Google’s current RAM requirement.
- Sign in to Google Play and create or use a Gamer profile.
- Install the game from Google Play.
- Launch a title that supports Sidekick and begin playing.
- Look for the Sidekick handle or overlay.
- Open it to see which utilities, progression features, tips or Gemini options are available to your account and that game.
There is no single universal “turn on Gemini gaming mode” path documented for every Android phone. The gesture, notification behavior and menu wording can differ by manufacturer, Android build and rollout. If the handle does not appear, do not assume the device is defective. The game may be unsupported, the developer may not have enabled Sidekick by default, or the feature may not yet have reached the relevant device, account or region.
Is Gemini Live required?
No. Sidekick can be enabled without Gemini Live, and enabling Sidekick does not automatically activate Gemini Live.
This distinction is central to the current rollout. Google’s developer documentation describes Gemini Live as limited to Early Access Partners, while Game Tips have separate restrictions for titles and languages. Google’s Level Up page also states that Gemini Live is optional and that no scaled Gemini Live launch is planned for 2026. That means a player may see the Sidekick overlay, recording controls, achievements or rewards while having no Gemini option at all.
Availability can change as Google expands or revises the program, so the status of a particular game should be checked at the time of use rather than inferred from launch coverage.

Why developers may care
For developers, Sidekick is another presentation layer for Play Games Services rather than merely an assistant shortcut. Google’s documented testing path involves creating an internal or closed testing release in Play Console, enabling Sidekick as the game’s default, adding it through the Play Console release process and testing with internal users or a limited audience before expanding the release.
Developers can connect the broader experience to integrations such as:
- Gamer Profile authentication
- Achievements
- Quests
- Rewards
- Game Stats
- Cloud save
- Play Points or Play Pass participation, where applicable
Google’s Level Up materials present these integrations as part of a broader developer program with engagement and commercial incentives. Sidekick can keep players inside a game while exposing progression, rewards, offers and related content, which gives Google and participating developers more opportunities to reinforce Play Games identity and activity.

Google’s March 2026 developer post also listed a November 2026 cloud-save milestone. That date is a program milestone, not evidence that every Sidekick game already supports cloud saves or that cloud save is required for the overlay.

AI advice can be wrong
Gemini’s output should be treated as a hint, not a verified strategy database. It may overlook a mechanic, recommend an outdated approach after a balance update or confuse the player’s current mode with another one. Confirm high-stakes or competitive advice with reliable game documentation and testing.
It may not understand hidden information
A screen-aware assistant can reason about visible gameplay, but it cannot be assumed to know information that is not displayed. This is especially important for games with hidden objectives, server-side events, random drop systems or complex numerical rules.
Screen sharing can expose sensitive content
Gemini Live may involve screen sharing and microphone use. Before starting a session, review the visible sharing and microphone controls. Be cautious if gameplay can show private messages, usernames, payment information or unrelated notifications. Do not assume that a particular type of gameplay data is stored or used in a particular way without checking the applicable Google privacy documentation.

It can add distraction, heat and battery use
Screen capture, screen sharing, microphone use, livestreaming and an active AI conversation can increase power and thermal load. The effect will vary by phone, game, network and settings. There is no universal battery or frame-rate figure that should be applied to every device.
It is not a cheat tool by definition
Sidekick is intended as an assistance and platform feature. Whether using AI guidance is acceptable depends on the game’s rules and the context, particularly in competitive play. Players should follow the game’s terms and tournament policies rather than assume that any overlay is permitted.
Sidekick versus a traditional guide
Sidekick is most useful when the player needs a fast answer without leaving the game: a reminder about a visible objective, an explanation of an on-screen element or a quick strategic suggestion. It may also be valuable for capturing gameplay, starting a stream or checking achievements and rewards without navigating away.
A traditional guide is better when the player needs a complete build, route, map, collectible list, quest chain, exact calculation or reproducible competitive strategy. Human-written guides can be organized around the game’s full rules and can cite specific locations, requirements and exceptions. Gemini’s visual context is convenient, but convenience is not the same as completeness or accuracy.

- September 23, 2025: Google announced the Android gaming overlay and demonstrated Gemini Live with The Battle of Polytopia.
- Q1 2026: Google reported that Sidekick had reached more than 90 titles.
- May 2026: Google reported more than 100 titles and described further expansion.
- August 18, 2026 documentation status: Gemini Live remained optional and limited by Early Access conditions, while Sidekick itself had a broader rollout.
The rollout is therefore best understood as two overlapping products: a broader Play Games overlay and a more restricted set of Gemini-powered features delivered through it.
Verdict
Play Games Sidekick is a useful platform layer with the potential to make quick, contextual gaming help more convenient. Gemini Live’s screen-aware conversation is the most interesting part, but it remains limited compared with the broader Sidekick feature set. For now, the strongest use case is quick assistance in participating Play Store games—not a universal Android gaming copilot and not a replacement for detailed wikis, walkthroughs or expert strategy guides.
