If your PS5 headset shows as connected but you hear nothing, the headset may not be broken. The usual causes are incorrect audio routing, muted output, low volume, an extreme game/chat balance, a loose cable, an unpaired wireless adapter, or a depleted battery.
Start with the two-minute checks below. Then follow the branch for your headset type before resetting anything.
Try these fixes first
- Press the PS button and open Sound in the Control Center. Confirm that the headset is selected as the output device.
- Raise the PS5 volume and the headset’s physical volume.
- Press the DualSense mute button once. If its indicator is blinking, both the microphone and controller/TV sound output may be muted. Check the headset’s own mute control too.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Check Output Device and Output to Headphones.
- If you hear game audio but not chat—or chat but not game audio—center the game/chat balance.
- Reinsert a 3.5 mm plug, or unplug and reconnect the wireless USB adapter.
- Turn the headset off and on again.
- Restart the PS5 rather than relying only on Rest Mode.
Sony’s current troubleshooting guidance covers these output, mute, pairing, and general sound checks in its PS5 support documentation and voice-chat troubleshooting guide.
First identify what is actually silent
| What you hear | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Neither game audio nor chat | Output selection, mute, volume, power, connection, pairing, or hardware |
| Game audio works but chat is silent | Game/chat balance, party-chat settings, or the other players’ microphones |
| Chat works but game audio is silent | Game volume, Output to Headphones, or the headset’s game/chat mixer |
| You hear others but they cannot hear you | Microphone input, not headphone output |
A microphone mute indicator does not necessarily mean headphone output is muted. Treat hearing audio and transmitting audio as separate problems.

Check the PS5 audio output path
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the headset under Output Device, then check Output to Headphones to control which audio is sent to it. The labels can vary slightly by headset, system software, region, or connection type, but look for those equivalent controls.
The PS5 may still be routing sound to a TV, monitor, soundbar, AV receiver, capture card, or HDMI switch. Plugging in a headset does not always mean the desired output path is active. Also check the Sound panel in the Control Center by pressing the PS button.
Check mute, volume, and balance
DualSense mute
Press the DualSense mute button once to restore the previous sound state. Sony says that holding the button can mute sound output from the controller and TV speakers as well as the microphone. The exact effect on headset output can vary by setup, so also check the headset’s own controls.
Multiple volume controls
Check the headset’s volume wheel or buttons, the PS5 Sound controls, and the game’s audio settings. If the sound is routed through a TV or monitor, check that device too.

Some headsets have separate game and chat controls. On the PULSE 3D, the CHAT and GAME buttons change the relative levels. Pressing both together resets the balance. A balance control pushed completely toward one source can make the headset seem defective when the other source is simply turned down. See the PULSE 3D manual for its control behavior.
For the PULSE Elite, the physical volume control changes PlayStation Link audio from the console or computer. Bluetooth-device volume is controlled on the connected mobile device; Sony documents the distinction in its PULSE Elite audio settings guide.
Fix a headset plugged into the DualSense
- Remove and firmly reinsert the 3.5 mm plug into the controller.
- Inspect the plug and cable for damage, kinks, exposed wiring, or a loose connector.
- Move the plug gently. If audio cuts in and out, suspect the cable, connector, or controller jack.
- Try another known-good wired headset in the same controller.
- Try the suspect headset on another device.
If another headset works in the controller but the suspect headset fails elsewhere too, the headset or cable is the likely fault. If several headsets fail in that controller but work elsewhere, suspect the DualSense jack. Compatibility can also depend on the headset’s wiring and controls; not every 3.5 mm model is guaranteed to behave identically.
Fix a USB or wireless headset
For a USB-dongle headset, charge it, insert its adapter firmly, turn the headset on, and wait for the connection indicator to become steady. Sony’s wireless-headset pairing guide recommends checking charge, adapter seating, and power-cycling when the connection fails.

- Turn the headset off, restart the PS5, and turn the headset on again.
- Check whether the headset is still paired with another device.
For intermittent sound, dropouts, or skipping, USB interference may be involved. Avoid placing a wireless adapter immediately beside high-speed USB 3.0 devices. A USB extension cable can create more physical separation. This is a targeted fix for unstable connections, not the first explanation for complete silence.
PULSE 3D: model-specific checks
Confirm the included wireless adapter is inserted, the headset is charged and powered on, and its indicator shows a successful connection. Check the GAME/CHAT balance before attempting a reset.
If pairing still fails, follow Sony’s model-specific wireless-headset troubleshooting instructions, which include resetting the adapter with a small object and pairing again. Do not apply a reset combination from another headset model; controls and reset procedures differ.
PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore: PlayStation Link checks
These headsets use PlayStation Link and include a PlayStation Link USB adapter. For the PULSE Elite, insert the adapter into a USB Type-A port and press the PlayStation Link button on the headset. A slowly blinking blue headset indicator searches for a connection; a solid blue headset indicator and solid white adapter indicator indicate connection.

The included PULSE Elite adapter is paired out of the box. If the headset is connected to Bluetooth on another device, verify that you are adjusting the PlayStation Link output and volume rather than the Bluetooth device’s audio.
Reset and pairing actions are not interchangeable on the PULSE Elite. Sony documents approximately eight seconds for pairing to a new PlayStation Link or Bluetooth device, a repeated eight-second operation for erasing paired connections and audio settings, and at least 10 seconds for resetting the headset without deleting pairings or settings. Follow the current instructions in PlayStation Accessories Support rather than guessing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check software and firmware
Install available PS5 system software updates and check for official headset or adapter updates supported by the manufacturer. Sony says updates for the PULSE Elite, PULSE Explore, and their USB adapters are delivered when PS5 system software is updated. An update is worth checking, but it is not proof that a particular software version caused the failure or that updating will fix it.
If the problem began immediately after an update, note that timing before resetting the headset. Use only the console’s official update process, the manufacturer’s official software, or the headset manual.

If TV or controller audio is also missing
When the headset alone is silent but TV audio works, focus on the headset, routing, cable, adapter, or controller. If TV, controller speaker, and headset audio all fail, investigate the broader PS5 audio chain:
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or display.
- Remove a soundbar, capture card, HDMI switch, or AV receiver temporarily.
- Confirm the display is on the correct input.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Try another HDMI port.
- Check that the display firmware is current.
These steps follow Sony’s general PS5 sound troubleshooting guidance and are less relevant when TV audio works normally.
Use cross-testing to find the failed component
| Test | Likely conclusion |
|---|---|
| Another headset works on the same PS5 | Suspect the original headset, adapter, or cable |
| The suspect headset works on another device | Suspect PS5 settings, USB port, pairing, or controller |
| TV audio also fails | Investigate the PS5 HDMI, display, or audio chain |
| Game audio works but chat does not | Check chat/game balance and chat settings |
| Chat works but game audio does not | Check game volume, output routing, and the game/chat mixer |
| The wireless indicator never becomes steady | Check charge, adapter, pairing, range, interference, or hardware |
| Audio cuts out when the cable moves | Suspect the cable, plug, or controller jack |
| Audio works only after changing USB ports | Suspect USB-port reliability, interference, or adapter seating |
When to contact support
Contact PlayStation or the headset manufacturer when the headset fails on multiple devices, another known-good headset works on the PS5, the adapter never powers or pairs, the controller jack is physically damaged, or model-specific reset and re-pairing do not help. Have the headset model, purchase details, indicator behavior, and cross-test results ready. Warranty or return coverage may be more useful than buying another headset immediately.
Should you replace the headset?
Replace it only after testing isolates the headset, cable, or adapter as the failed component. A replacement will not fix audio routed to the TV, a muted DualSense, a depleted battery, or a game/chat balance set to one side.
Recommended Free Tools
If the adapter alone has failed, a targeted replacement may be appropriate. Sony’s PlayStation Link USB adapter is intended for compatible PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore setups; it is not a universal replacement for every PlayStation wireless headset or for PULSE 3D.
For a complete replacement, the official PULSE Elite is an over-ear PlayStation Link headset, while the PULSE Explore uses earbuds and a charging case. Product availability and prices change, so check the official listings rather than treating a past price as current. For third-party models, confirm PS5 compatibility and whether the headset requires a USB transmitter or manufacturer-specific adapter; do not assume any Bluetooth headset will pair directly with the PS5.
