Verdict: The $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X is one of the fastest mainstream Windows gaming handhelds, and its comfortable controls, 80Wh battery, 24GB of memory, dual USB-C ports, and Xbox Full Screen Experience make it a compelling premium option. But it is still a Windows 11 PC with a seven-inch LCD, substantial weight, and roughly three hours of demanding-game battery life in independent testing. Buy it for maximum handheld-PC performance and broad storefront support—not because it has become a fully console-like Xbox.
What is the ROG Xbox Ally X?
The ROG Xbox Ally X is ASUS ROG’s 2025 premium handheld PC, developed with Microsoft and Xbox. The U.S. model is the RC73XA, launched on October 16, 2025, with a $999.99 launch/list price. Prices, stock, bundled subscriptions, warranty terms, and feature availability vary by market; the Microsoft listing has not always shown the device in stock, so check the official ASUS product page and Microsoft listing before buying.
Its identity is important: this is an ASUS-manufactured Windows 11 Home gaming PC with an Xbox-focused interface, not a portable Xbox Series console. It can run Xbox PC games, Steam, Epic, GOG, mods, emulators, and ordinary Windows software, but console ownership does not make every Xbox console game available locally.

The headline graphics figure—up to 8.6 teraflops—is a theoretical manufacturer specification, not a prediction of frame rates. The 24GB of memory is also shared system memory, not 24GB of dedicated VRAM. Those distinctions matter when comparing it with laptops or desktop graphics cards.

Performance: the reason to buy it
The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, faster LPDDR5X-8000 memory, and 24GB capacity give the Ally X more headroom than the previous 2024 ROG Ally X. It is particularly well suited to demanding modern games, higher-resolution external displays, and users who want one handheld that can also act as a compact Windows PC.
That performance needs context. Battery and plugged-in results are different products in practice. At a realistic 17W Performance mode, the device is balancing frame rate, heat, noise, and endurance. Plugged in, a tested 35W Turbo mode can deliver noticeably more performance, but at the cost of power consumption and fan activity. A result obtained at 35W on a charger should not be presented as representative of portable play.
Independent testing has produced strong results, but figures vary with drivers, game patches, resolution, graphics presets, upscaling, frame generation, and power mode. Tom’s Hardware reported 64 frames per second at 720p in one Shadow of the Tomb Raider configuration and 79fps in another reported condition; Tom’s Guide separately compared 17W and 35W operation against the prior Ally X. These are useful reference points, not universal guarantees. See the Tom’s Guide testing and Tom’s Hardware review for their test conditions.
1080p is the panel resolution, not always the best game resolution
The screen is 1080p, but demanding games often make better use of 720p rendering with an upscaler, a reduced preset, or a frame-rate cap. On a seven-inch display, a well-tuned upscaled image can be a sensible trade-off; insisting on native 1080p at high settings can produce lower and less consistent frame rates.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The most meaningful advantage is often not a benchmark peak but extra consistency. The Z2 Extreme platform gives games more room to maintain playable frame times when effects, crowds, or open-world areas become demanding. It still cannot make every new AAA release run at high settings and 120fps.
Battery life: larger, but not all-day
The 80Wh battery is a major hardware advantage, yet high-performance PC gaming remains power-intensive. Tom’s Guide measured approximately three hours of playtime, Notebookcheck reported more than three hours under its conditions, and TechRadar recorded 2 hours 56 minutes in a PCMark 10 gaming battery test. Those results are broadly consistent, but they are test outcomes rather than a guaranteed runtime.
| Workload | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Indie and 2D games | Potentially much longer than demanding AAA play, especially at a lower wattage and refresh rate |
| AAA gaming at 17W | Roughly a few hours, depending on brightness, frame cap, game, and background activity |
| 25W–35W gaming | Best treated as plugged-in play; battery drain rises quickly |
| Streaming video or light desktop work | Longer than gaming, but dependent on brightness, wireless activity, and Windows processes |
The included 65W adapter is appropriate for the device’s normal operation. A low-wattage charger can charge slowly, fail to keep up during play, or restrict the selected performance mode. For full-power play away from an outlet, use a USB-C Power Delivery charger or power bank with suitable output; do not assume every USB-C accessory can provide the required wattage.
The Xbox interface improves Windows—but does not replace it
The Xbox Full Screen Experience is the most visible software change. It gives the handheld a controller-first home screen for discovering and launching games, reducing the need to interact with the Windows desktop during ordinary play. Xbox PC titles, Steam, Epic, GOG, and other installed launchers can be brought into a more unified game-oriented view. ASUS’s Armoury Crate SE and Command Center remain relevant for device controls, performance profiles, settings, and hardware management.

This is a meaningful improvement over starting every session at a desktop. It does not erase Windows. Initial setup can still involve Wi-Fi, Microsoft-account authentication, updates, touch input, and desktop interaction. Settings, drivers, file management, mods, non-store programs, and some launcher functions remain ordinary Windows tasks. Storefronts also retain separate accounts and update systems.

Sleep, wake, sign-in, controller input, and updates are still the areas where a Windows handheld can feel less appliance-like than a Steam Deck or console. The Xbox layer makes navigation easier; it does not provide a separate console operating system with identical suspend/resume, certification, and account integration.
Game Pass also needs precise expectations. A subscription can provide access to supported PC games, while Play Anywhere can link eligible digital purchases across Xbox and PC. Xbox says Play Anywhere supports more than 1,000 games across supported platforms, but console-only titles do not automatically become local PC games. Some games may instead be played through cloud streaming, and anti-cheat or launcher requirements can affect compatibility. Check the current Game Pass catalog and terms.
Controls and comfort are excellent
The Ally X’s controller-style chassis is one of its clearest strengths. Contoured grips, full-size analog sticks, an Xbox-style ABXY layout, a usable D-pad, triggers, haptics, and two assignable rear buttons make it feel more like a conventional controller than a small laptop with controls attached.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Reviewers have consistently praised the shape for extended sessions, including Tom’s Guide. That comfort does not make the device light: at 715g, it is heavier than a Steam Deck OLED and can become tiring when held unsupported. The grips distribute that mass well, but smaller hands or long travel sessions may favor a lighter device.
The rear buttons add useful flexibility for keyboard commands, paddles, or game-specific shortcuts. They also need careful mapping because any rear control can be pressed accidentally depending on hand position. The full-size controls are better suited to action games and long sessions than cramped ultra-portable designs, while the D-pad and familiar button layout work well for platformers and many fighting games.
Display: fast and practical, not luxurious
The seven-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen offers 120Hz refresh, 500-nit brightness, and FreeSync Premium. Those features help with responsive games, variable frame rates, and indoor use. Touch input is useful for Windows setup and desktop tasks, while adaptive synchronization can make uneven performance look smoother.
At this price, however, the panel is conventional. It is not OLED, it is not larger than seven inches, and its contrast and black levels cannot match an OLED handheld. Bezels and the small physical size also make text-heavy games, strategy interfaces, and desktop work less comfortable. Reflections and outdoor visibility depend on the environment despite the rated brightness.
The display’s 120Hz capability should not be confused with a promise of 120fps gaming. It is most valuable for lighter games, competitive titles, older releases, and situations where variable refresh makes fluctuating frame rates appear smoother. For demanding games, the performance target is usually a stable 30, 40, 45, or 60fps with sensible settings.

Two USB-C ports are unusually useful on a handheld. One is USB4 with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery; the other is USB 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery. Together with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a microSD reader, and a headphone jack, they make the Ally X a capable docked PC for a monitor or TV, keyboard, mouse, and external storage.

- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
Docking still depends on the entire chain: the dock, USB-C Power Delivery profile, cable, display, charger, and desired resolution or refresh rate. A generic dock may not support maximum output or full-performance charging.
The internal 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is a reasonable starting point but can fill quickly with modern AAA games. The M.2 2280 format is more upgrade-friendly than the compact storage designs used by some handhelds. A microSD card is convenient for smaller games and media, though internal storage may provide more predictable loading behavior. Confirm the exact card and upgrade requirements through ASUS support before opening the device.

The 2025 model is a more capable machine, but it is not an automatic upgrade for every owner.
- Reasons to upgrade: Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of faster memory, the Xbox Full Screen Experience, updated controls, and potentially better performance at comparable power levels.
- Reasons to keep the 2024 model: both use the same broad seven-inch, 1080p, 120Hz display concept and 80Wh battery class. If your current Ally X already delivers the frame rates you want, the new model may not feel transformative.
Do not rely on a universal percentage improvement. The difference depends on the game, driver, resolution, power mode, and frame-rate cap. The newer machine makes most sense when you need additional headroom, want the new software layer, or can sell the old device at a favorable price. See the official 2024 Ally X page for the older model’s specifications.
ROG Xbox Ally X versus Steam Deck OLED
These devices prioritize different things.
- Choose the Ally X for higher peak performance in compatible games, Windows-only anti-cheat support, PC Game Pass, Epic and GOG access, mods, desktop software, stronger external-display use, and its larger 80Wh battery.
- Choose Steam Deck OLED for a lower entry price, an OLED display, SteamOS’s more unified experience, simpler Steam integration, and a more console-like suspend/resume identity.
The Ally X is the better performance and compatibility tool; the Steam Deck OLED is often the better value and software experience for a Steam-first library. Neither is universally superior.
Who should buy it?
Buy now if
- You want one of the strongest mainstream Windows handhelds and can afford its laptop-class price.
- You use PC Game Pass or need Steam, Epic, GOG, mods, emulation, and desktop software in one device.
- You value comfortable controller ergonomics more than low weight.
- You regularly connect to a monitor, TV, keyboard, or mouse.
- You are comfortable adjusting resolution, power modes, upscaling, and game settings.
Buy only if discounted or specifically suited to you if
- You already own the 2024 ROG Ally X and want only a dramatic frame-rate increase.
- You mainly play at native 1080p and expect every AAA game to run at high settings.
- You care more about OLED contrast, a larger screen, or a lighter chassis than peak performance.
Choose something else if
- You want the simplest possible handheld gaming appliance: consider Steam Deck OLED.
- You primarily want the lowest price and play indies, older games, or stream games: consider the lower-cost ROG Xbox Ally, while accepting its lower performance, memory, and battery tier.
- You need sustained performance, a large screen, a keyboard, and upgradeability: a gaming laptop remains the better PC, though it is not as convenient to hold.
- You want a genuinely pocketable device: 715g and the broad chassis work against that goal.
Final verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X gets the important hardware decisions mostly right. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform and 24GB of memory provide serious handheld performance, the 80Wh battery is a meaningful advantage, and the controller-style design is comfortable enough to make long sessions enjoyable. The Xbox Full Screen Experience also makes Windows less intrusive during normal game launching.
But the compromises are real: $999.99 is a premium price, the LCD is not an OLED showcase, the seven-inch screen is cramped for desktop work, high-power gaming still lasts only around three hours in independent tests, and Windows remains underneath the Xbox interface.
Performance outpaces the imperfections—but only for the right buyer. It is a strong recommendation for Xbox PC Game Pass users, performance-focused PC players, and anyone who wants a broad Windows gaming machine with excellent controls. It is not the best value for Steam-only players, a compelling must-upgrade for every 2024 Ally X owner, or a substitute for a true Xbox console.
