Nintendo Switch 2 Design Leak: What the Images Got Right—and Wrong

The 2024 Nintendo Switch 2 design leak got several broad features right, but its dimensions and detailed component claims did not hold up as confirmed facts.

The September 18, 2024 images were a plausible early look at Nintendo Switch 2, but they were never proof of a finished console. They reportedly came from a shell model obtained through an accessory manufacturer, and the renders’ source did not provide evidence proving that origin. Nintendo’s later official specifications show that several broad predictions—such as a larger 1080p screen, 256GB of storage, a redesigned Joy-Con system, and a dock with wired Ethernet—were directionally accurate. The leaked technical specification list, however, should not be treated as confirmed.

Switch 2 is now an official, released product. Nintendo lists it as available in the United States for a $449.99 MSRP, making this a retrospective verification of the leak rather than a current rumor report.

What actually leaked in September 2024?

The report did not establish that a complete Nintendo Switch 2 had been photographed. Instead, it described a combination of alleged hardware imagery, 3D renders, and a separate purported component list.

  • Alleged source material: A 3D-modeling enthusiast reportedly obtained a shell model through an accessory manufacturer.
  • Published images: The shell was used as the basis for CAD-style renders showing a larger Switch-like handheld, detachable controllers, and a revised dock.
  • Unverified provenance: The person behind the renders reportedly did not provide public evidence proving where the shell came from.
  • Independent corroboration: BGR cited VGC as reporting that an anonymous source familiar with Nintendo’s plans believed the images matched hardware Nintendo had shown to partners.

That combination made the leak more credible than an obviously fan-made concept, but it still fell short of proof. A shell can indicate the intended exterior shape and port placement; it cannot establish the final processor, memory configuration, cooling system, or software capabilities.

What did the alleged design show?

The renders depicted a larger successor to the original Switch’s handheld-console design. They appeared to show detachable left and right controllers, a revised handheld body, changes to the controller attachment system, and a redesigned dock. The images also suggested a larger screen area and altered bezel proportions.

The dock was reported to include an Ethernet connection, while the handheld was shown with a revised external-port layout. These were visual or structural claims—not confirmation of the electronics inside the device. The images should therefore be described as purported or alleged renders, not official photographs of a production console.

The final Nintendo Switch 2 hardware baseline

Nintendo’s U.S. specifications provide the reliable comparison point:

  • Approximately 10.7 × 4.5 × 0.55 inches with Joy-Con 2 attached—roughly 271.8 × 114.3 × 14mm.
  • Approximately 1.18 pounds with Joy-Con 2 attached.
  • 7.9-inch LCD display with 1920 × 1080 resolution.
  • HDR10 and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz.
  • 256GB of UFS internal storage.
  • microSD Express expansion up to 2TB.
  • Custom NVIDIA processor, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, two USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a built-in microphone.
  • Docked output up to 4K at 60fps, or 1080p/1440p at up to 120fps under supported conditions.
  • Estimated battery life of approximately 2–6.5 hours.

These are official U.S. specifications and should not automatically be assumed to cover every regional edition without checking the relevant Nintendo documentation.

Where the leak was wrong—or simply incomplete

The dimensions do not match

The reported 206mm width is materially different from Nintendo’s official approximate 271.8mm width measurement. It is possible that the leak used a different measurement convention or referred to the console body without attached controllers, but the original reporting does not establish that clearly. The published figures should not be presented as the final Switch 2 dimensions.

The component list was not confirmed

The leaked chip identifiers, memory speed, and cooling claims are not validated by Nintendo’s public specifications. Nintendo’s official page names a custom NVIDIA processor but does not confirm the alleged part numbers or a dual-fan design. Likewise, output capabilities alone do not prove that the system uses HDMI 2.1.

This distinction matters: broad exterior predictions can come from accessory-industry knowledge or informed speculation, while internal component claims require evidence from official documentation or a verified teardown.

Why did the images seem credible?

  1. Visual similarity is suggestive, not conclusive. The final product retained the larger, revised Switch concept shown by the renders.
  2. Accessory supply chains can expose exterior information. Manufacturers may receive dimensions or dummy shells before launch, but a shell can represent an early prototype or an inaccurate model.
  3. Anonymous corroboration adds weight but not certainty. A source familiar with Nintendo’s partner briefings reportedly found the design consistent with what Nintendo had shown.
  4. The released hardware is the final authority. Official specifications support several broad leak claims while leaving many technical details unverified.

The later accuracy of some predictions does not prove that the source possessed a complete final prototype. It only shows that parts of the reported design direction aligned with Nintendo’s eventual product.

What the leak means for buyers now

The report is mainly useful as a record of how close early hardware leaks can be at the level of industrial design. It is not a reliable buying guide or substitute for Nintendo’s current specifications.

One practical detail the leak could not settle is storage compatibility. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for expanded game storage. Older ordinary Switch microSD cards cannot be used for normal Switch 2 game storage, although Nintendo says they can be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Check Nintendo’s accessories and compatibility information before reusing cards, docks, chargers, or other original Switch accessories.

Nintendo currently lists Switch 2 as available in the United States for a $449.99 MSRP. Actual retail pricing can vary, and the U.S. figure should not be generalized to other regions.

Verdict

The leaked images were best understood as a plausible early design indication, not an official reveal. They appear to have anticipated the final console’s larger display, 256GB storage, Ethernet-equipped dock, revised Joy-Con 2 controllers, mouse input, and two-USB-C layout. But the alleged dimensions do not match Nintendo’s published measurements, and the detailed chip, memory, HDMI, and cooling claims remain unconfirmed.

In short, the leak was directionally credible about the shape and feature set, but it was not a verified technical specification sheet.
