Yes, the Ryzen 5 4600G can be overclocked. Its multiplier is unlocked, but the best upgrade path depends on whether you use its integrated Radeon graphics or a discrete GPU. For an APU gaming system, start with dual-channel memory and memory/fabric tuning, then try a modest iGPU overclock. For a discrete-GPU system, automatic boosting or a carefully tested CPU tune is usually more useful.

There is no universal safe clock or voltage for every 4600G. Motherboard firmware, cooling, memory, silicon quality and workload all matter. Treat the settings below as a repeatable method—not guaranteed targets.

Ryzen 5 4600G specifications that matter

The Ryzen 5 4600G is a Zen 2 AM4 APU with:

  • Six cores and 12 threads
  • 3.7 GHz base clock and up to 4.2 GHz automatic boost
  • 65 W default TDP
  • Integrated Radeon graphics with seven graphics cores at 1,900 MHz
  • Official dual-channel DDR4 support up to DDR4-3200
  • A listed maximum operating temperature of 95°C
  • An unlocked multiplier for CPU and graphics overclocking

AMD lists support across several AM4 chipsets, including A320, A520, B350, B450, B550, X370, X470 and X570, although the available controls depend on the board and its BIOS. Check the exact processor specifications on AMD’s product page.

“Up to 4.2 GHz” is a boost ceiling, not a promise that all six cores will run continuously at 4.2 GHz. Automatic Precision Boost changes clocks according to temperature, power, current and workload. A fixed 4.2 GHz all-core setting can therefore improve sustained multi-core consistency while reducing some lightly threaded boost behavior.

Is overclocking worth it?

System or goal Best first choice Main trade-off
Integrated-graphics gaming Dual-channel memory, memory/fabric tuning, then iGPU tuning Memory and fabric instability can be difficult to diagnose
Discrete-GPU gaming Automatic boost behavior and memory latency A CPU overclock may deliver little visible gaming benefit
Multi-core productivity PBO or a carefully tested all-core tune Higher heat and power consumption
Quiet, simple daily use Enable the memory profile only Smaller potential performance gain
Benchmark chasing Manual CPU, memory and iGPU tuning More instability, time and warranty risk

The integrated Radeon graphics uses system memory, so bandwidth and latency can matter more than a small CPU-core overclock. A CPU-only tune is not automatically the best option for a PC that plays games through the 4600G’s iGPU.

What you need before starting

  • A motherboard BIOS that exposes the controls you need.
  • Two matched memory modules installed in the board’s recommended dual-channel slots.
  • Adequate cooling and a reliable power supply.
  • A documented CMOS-clear procedure. Keep the motherboard manual or a second device available.
  • Stable BIOS firmware that supports the 4600G.
  • A repeatable benchmark and monitoring software.

Useful tools include AMD Ryzen Master for Windows-based experimentation and telemetry, HWiNFO for detailed sensors, OCCT for CPU and memory testing, and MemTest86 for bootable memory testing. Ryzen Master is useful for testing, but a configuration that passes one Windows session is not automatically a permanent, stable BIOS configuration.

1. Record a stock baseline

Before changing anything, save your BIOS settings and record:

  • Memory data rate and timings
  • Maximum single-core boost
  • All-core clock under a repeatable workload
  • CPU temperature, effective clock and package power
  • A benchmark score
  • Average FPS and, if possible, 1% lows in representative games

Use the same game settings and workload after each change. A higher score is not an improvement if the system crashes, throttles or corrupts memory.

2. Update the BIOS only when appropriate

Download firmware from the motherboard manufacturer’s support page and verify the exact model and PCB revision. Confirm that the BIOS supports the Ryzen 4000G series. A newer BIOS may improve AGESA compatibility, memory training or stability, but it can also move menu locations or change available controls. Do not assume the newest version is automatically the best overclocking version.

3. Enable the memory profile first

Motherboards may call the DDR4 profile XMP, DOCP, A-XMP or EOCP. EXPO is primarily associated with AMD DDR5 platforms and is not the normal profile name for this DDR4 system.

Begin with the memory kit’s rated profile. Two matched modules are strongly preferable to one because single-channel operation reduces the bandwidth available to the integrated GPU.

If the PC fails to boot after enabling the profile, turn it off, clear CMOS according to the motherboard manual, reload defaults and try a lower memory frequency or more conservative timings. Do not make several changes at once.

4. Tune memory and Infinity Fabric cautiously

Relevant controls can include DRAM frequency, primary timings, DRAM voltage, SoC voltage, Infinity Fabric clock and the UCLK/FCLK relationship. Menu names vary by vendor and BIOS version.

DDR4’s advertised data rate is not the same as its physical memory clock. For example, DDR4-3600 corresponds to a 1,800 MHz memory clock. A higher data rate can perform worse if it forces an inefficient or unstable fabric relationship.

  1. Start with the rated memory profile.
  2. Test it before changing anything else.
  3. Increase frequency in small steps, or tighten timings at the same frequency.
  4. Keep memory and fabric synchronized where stable.
  5. Compare actual benchmark and game results rather than assuming the larger number is faster.

DDR4-3600 may work on many systems, but AMD’s official specification for the 4600G is DDR4-3200. The practical limit depends on the motherboard, DIMM layout, memory ICs, BIOS and processor sample. Enthusiast reports also show widely varying Renoir fabric limits, so do not treat a reported FCLK frequency as a guarantee.

Avoid blanket SoC-voltage ceilings. Boards differ in voltage reporting and load-line behavior, and the available evidence does not establish one universal long-term manual-voltage target.

5. Overclock the integrated Radeon graphics

If the 4600G is rendering games, record stock performance and increase the iGPU frequency in small increments. After each change, run a graphics-heavy workload and look for:

  • Driver resets or black screens
  • Visual artifacts
  • Game crashes
  • Frame-time spikes
  • Temperature increases or clock throttling

Community examples include iGPU clocks around 2,200 MHz and higher, but those are individual results. One report describes 2,200 MHz at 1.225 V and another 2,375 MHz at 1.25 V; neither is a safe or reproducible target for every processor. Some boards also expose unreliable or limited iGPU-voltage control.

Test the memory subsystem as well as the graphics frequency. An unstable memory or fabric overclock can look like an iGPU failure. Check average FPS and 1% lows rather than expecting a fixed percentage gain from a particular clock increase. Results vary with game engine, resolution, settings, memory bandwidth and thermal limits.

6. Try automatic boosting before a fixed CPU overclock

Where the BIOS provides it, test Precision Boost Overdrive or another automatic overclocking mode before forcing a fixed multiplier. Possible menu areas include Advanced, AMD Overclocking, AMD CBS, CPU Configuration and Overclocking. The exact path differs by manufacturer and firmware version.

  • Unlocked for Overclocking: Yes

PBO allows the automatic boost system to operate with expanded power, current or thermal limits where supported. Auto Overclocking is a related automatic tuning mode exposed through compatible BIOS versions or Ryzen Master. Neither should be described as universally safe: AMD states that PBO operates outside factory specifications and may affect warranty coverage.

Do not copy universal PPT, TDC or EDC values from another board. Appropriate limits depend on the motherboard’s power delivery, cooling, BIOS behavior and whether the integrated GPU is also loaded.

7. Use a fixed all-core CPU overclock only deliberately

A fixed all-core setting is worth considering only if its sustained multi-core behavior is better for your workload and its loss of automatic boost is acceptable.

  1. Return to a known-good baseline.
  2. Set the CPU ratio manually.
  3. Use a conservative voltage approach initially if the BIOS permits it.
  4. Increase the ratio in small steps.
  5. Use the smallest voltage increase needed for stability.
  6. Test both multi-threaded and lightly threaded workloads.
  7. Check effective clocks, temperatures and single-core benchmark results.

A fixed 4.2 GHz all-core setting is a logical experiment because it matches the advertised maximum boost clock, but it is not automatically better than stock operation. Published community results around 4.2–4.4 GHz are sample-specific and use different boards, cooling and stability standards. Do not treat a community voltage recommendation as an AMD long-term-safety specification.

How to test stability

Quick screening

Boot into Windows, run a short CPU test and, if applicable, a graphics-heavy test. Check for crashes, WHEA hardware errors, driver resets and artifacts.

CPU testing

Use a Cinebench multi-core loop, an OCCT CPU test and a sustained workload representative of your normal use.

Memory and fabric testing

Run MemTest86 from a bootable USB and an OCCT memory test. Memory instability can appear after hours, during cold boot, after sleep or only in a particular game.

Real-world validation

Test several games, restart and cold boot, sleep and wake, video playback, USB and storage activity, and any virtualization or productivity workloads you use. No single stress test proves stability under every workload.

  • For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
  • Cooler not included

Temperature and monitoring guidance

AMD lists 95°C as the 4600G’s maximum operating temperature. Treat that as a limit, not a target. Stop or reduce the tune if temperatures rapidly approach it, clocks throttle or the system becomes unstable.

Monitor sustained temperature, effective clock, CPU package power and voltage rather than relying only on the requested multiplier. BIOS and software voltage readings may not match. A stock Wraith cooler can be adequate for modest settings, but headroom depends on ambient temperature, case airflow, fan curves and whether the CPU and iGPU are loaded simultaneously. A basic tower cooler may help sustained manual tuning, but it cannot fix unstable memory or poor case airflow.

What to do if the PC will not boot

Failure to POST

  1. Turn the system off and switch off the PSU if necessary.
  2. Clear CMOS using the board’s jumper, button or battery procedure.
  3. Boot with default settings.
  4. Re-enable only one change at a time.
  5. Reduce memory frequency or remove the most recent CPU/iGPU change.
  6. Keep a written record of every successful setting.

If the board supports memory training, allow several restart cycles before assuming it has failed. If it remains stuck, clear CMOS and return to the last known-good configuration.

Windows crashes or reboots

Possible causes include excessive CPU frequency, insufficient voltage, unstable memory timings, fabric instability, an excessive iGPU clock, overheating, power-delivery limitations or a driver failure caused by an unstable graphics tune. Revert the newest change and test CPU, memory and iGPU separately. Check Event Viewer for hardware errors, but restore default settings before troubleshooting drivers.

Artifacts or graphics driver resets

Lower the iGPU frequency and return memory to its last stable setting. Check whether the problem occurs with stock graphics and the tuned memory. More voltage is not guaranteed to solve an artifacting problem.

Stable benchmark, unstable games

Lower the CPU, memory, fabric or iGPU setting. A game crash usually indicates incomplete validation or a workload-specific failure, not necessarily a defective game.

Recommended starting strategies

Low-risk daily setup

Install two matched DIMMs, enable the memory profile, test memory stability and leave CPU and iGPU clocks automatic.

APU gaming setup

Start with memory configuration and synchronization, then tune the iGPU in small increments. Validate every change with memory tests and several games. This usually makes more sense than beginning with a fixed CPU multiplier.

CPU-focused setup

Test automatic boosting or PBO first, then compare it with a fixed all-core setting in both multi-threaded and lightly threaded workloads. Keep the fixed setting only if it produces a measurable benefit without unacceptable heat, noise or instability.

Final verdict

The Ryzen 5 4600G is genuinely overclockable, but there is no guaranteed 4.2 GHz, 4.4 GHz or 2.3 GHz result and no universal daily voltage. For integrated-graphics gaming, prioritize dual-channel memory, synchronized memory/fabric operation and cautious iGPU tuning. For systems with a discrete GPU, preserve automatic boost behavior unless testing proves that a manual CPU tune helps your actual workload. Make one change at a time, monitor temperatures and recoverability, and call a setting stable only after it survives memory tests, stress tests, games and cold boots.
