To allocate more RAM in CurseForge, open Settings → Minecraft and adjust the global memory slider, or open a modpack’s Profile Options, enable Custom RAM Allocation, and set memory for that profile only. Restart the modpack afterward.
Before changing CurseForge’s RAM setting
This guide applies to Minecraft: Java Edition, which is the edition used by CurseForge modpacks. Bedrock Edition manages memory automatically and does not provide the same Java heap setting.
First check your computer’s total installed RAM. On Windows, open Task Manager and select Performance → Memory. On macOS, open Apple menu → About This Mac. Also check the modpack’s official project page for a specific memory recommendation; that guidance should take priority over generic ranges.
Close memory-heavy programs such as browsers, recording software, launchers, and voice-chat applications before testing. More RAM is not automatically more FPS: low frame rates may instead be caused by the CPU, GPU, shaders, storage, render distance, or an incompatible mod.

Allocate RAM globally in CurseForge
The global setting establishes the default memory amount for Minecraft profiles that do not have their own override.
- Open the CurseForge app.
- Click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select Minecraft.
- Open the Java or memory settings area. Depending on the app version, this may appear as Java Settings.
- Find the memory-allocation slider and move it to the desired value.
- Close the settings window or click the available save button, then relaunch the modpack.
CurseForge’s support documentation identifies 4 GB (4096 MB) as the documented default for modpacks. It also displays a warning when the selected value exceeds 75% of the computer’s total RAM. That is a warning boundary, not a target: the operating system and other applications still need memory. See CurseForge’s Minecraft settings documentation for the current controls.
Allocate RAM for one modpack
Use a profile-specific setting when one demanding pack needs more memory but your lighter packs do not.
- Open My Modpacks in CurseForge.
- Select the modpack you want to change.
- Click its three-dot menu.
- Choose Profile Options.
- Enable Custom RAM Allocation.
- Set the maximum memory amount.
- Click Done, then launch the profile again.
A custom profile value can override the global default. Therefore, if changing the global slider appears to have no effect, inspect that modpack’s Profile Options and either adjust or disable its custom allocation.

There is no universal “best” number. Start with the pack author’s recommendation, then consider your total system RAM, the number and complexity of mods, shaders, resource packs, render distance, and the programs running alongside Minecraft.

| Installed system RAM | Reasonable starting point for a modded client |
|---|---|
| 4 GB | Generally unsuitable for large modpacks; do not allocate most of the system memory. |
| 8 GB | About 4–6 GB, depending on background applications and the pack. |
| 16 GB | About 6–8 GB for many modpacks. |
| 32 GB or more | Often 8–12 GB is sufficient; increase only when testing shows the pack needs it. |
As broad guidance, CurseForge describes roughly 4–6 GB for lighter modded play and 6–10 GB or more for heavy modpacks. These are starting points, not requirements. A pack with shaders or hundreds of mods may need more, while another may run well with less.
Do not assign all available RAM to Minecraft. The slider sets the Java heap’s maximum size; Minecraft may use less than that amount, but reserving an excessive maximum can leave too little memory for Windows or macOS, drivers, CurseForge, and other applications. It can cause swapping, longer garbage-collection pauses, sluggishness, or launch failures. CurseForge’s blog also notes that allocating more than approximately 12 GB usually does not help except in unusually demanding setups.
Confirm that the change worked
- Launch the modpack.
- Enter a world or server.
- Press F3 to open Minecraft’s debug screen. On some keyboards, you may need to use Fn+F3.
- Find the memory readout, which may look like
Mem: 1200/6144MB.
In that example, the first number is Minecraft’s current heap usage and the second is the maximum heap available to the Java process. The game does not need to use the entire maximum immediately. This display confirms Minecraft’s configured Java heap; it does not represent total physical RAM being used by the whole computer.
What to do if the game still lags or crashes
If the game will not launch after increasing RAM
- Return to the CurseForge memory control.
- Reduce the allocation by 1–2 GB.
- Close browsers, recording tools, launchers, and other memory-heavy applications.
- Launch the profile again.
- If it still fails, use the modpack author’s recommended value rather than a larger custom amount.
A value above CurseForge’s 75% warning threshold may leave the operating system without enough usable memory. If the failure continues, the problem may be Java, the launcher, a modloader, or a damaged installation rather than the allocation itself.
If the setting appears not to change
Check whether you changed the global default while the profile has Custom RAM Allocation enabled. Confirm that you edited the correct Minecraft profile, fully quit and reopened the game, and launched it through the same route you configured. Then use F3 to inspect the maximum heap value.

If “Java heap space” errors continue
Increase memory only when the computer has enough physical RAM and the pack demonstrably needs it. Also check the Minecraft and modpack versions, Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge compatibility, recently added mods, shaders, resource packs, and the selected Java executable. CurseForge can install Java automatically, but it also allows you to choose another executable; an unsuitable or outdated Java installation can cause launch problems.
If the installation or launch files may be damaged, use CurseForge’s Repair Installation option where available. CurseForge’s troubleshooting documentation treats Java, modloader incompatibility, installation corruption, and launcher failures as separate causes.
If the game is still slow after a reasonable allocation
Look at the F3 memory maximum and current usage. If usage is comfortably below the maximum while FPS remains low, more RAM is unlikely to solve the problem. Test without shaders, reduce render distance, check CPU and GPU usage, and investigate recently installed mods. Slow chunk generation can be CPU- or storage-bound rather than memory-bound.
CurseForge versus the official Minecraft Launcher
CurseForge may launch a pack through the standard Minecraft Launcher, the Microsoft Store launcher, or its own launcher configuration. The screens and available controls can therefore differ. Use CurseForge’s own global or profile setting first.
If you launch the relevant installation directly through the official Minecraft Launcher, the documented route is:

- SMART COOLING — From idle to full load, keep the laptop running smoothly with our first laptop cooling pad that changes fan speeds automatically to manage system temperatures based on the settings
- AIRTIGHT PRESSURE CHAMBER — Included foam seals ensure no cool air leakage and works in tandem with a long lifespan 140 mm brushless fan that spins up to 3000 RPM to significantly reduce CPU, GPU, and surface temperatures
- WORKS WITH MOST LAPTOPS — Whether you've got an ultra-portable 14″ laptop or an 18″ powerhouse, choose between three magnetic frames that maximize cool air pressure and circulation
- PRESET & CUSTOM FAN CURVES — Keep the system cool in any scenario with our recommended presets or calibrate the fan to adjust for noise level or desired internal temperature via Razer Synapse
- 3-PORT USB TYPE A HUB — From webcams to controllers to drawing tablets, plug in more devices to the laptop without solely relying on its native USB ports
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Select Installations.
- Find the relevant installation and click its three-dot menu.
- Select Edit, then open More Options.
- Find JVM Arguments.
- Change the value in an argument such as
-Xmx2G. - Save the installation and launch it.
-Xmx sets Java’s maximum heap size, so -Xmx6G sets a 6 GB maximum; -Xmx6144M is an equivalent megabyte form. -Xms sets the initial heap size. Avoid manually adding a second conflicting -Xmx argument, and normally let CurseForge manage the value when its control works correctly. See Minecraft’s JVM argument guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClient RAM is not server RAM
CurseForge’s slider concerns the Minecraft client launched through the app. A separately installed modded server has its own startup script and its own -Xmx and -Xms values. Changing the client allocation does not automatically change the server’s memory allocation; each process must have enough memory assigned independently.
FAQ
Can I allocate more than half of my computer’s RAM?
Sometimes, but it is not automatically advisable. Leave enough memory for the operating system and other programs, and treat CurseForge’s warning above 75% of total RAM as a signal to reduce the value or close background applications.
Why is Minecraft not using all the RAM I assigned?
The assigned value is a maximum heap size, not a requirement. Minecraft may use less until the world, mods, and loaded areas require more.
Does allocating more RAM increase FPS?
Only when memory pressure is the bottleneck. It will not automatically fix GPU limits, CPU-bound chunk generation, shader performance, storage delays, or faulty mods.

Does the setting affect every modpack?
The global value is the default, but a profile with Custom RAM Allocation can override it. Check the individual profile when the global change seems ineffective.
Can I allocate RAM to Minecraft Bedrock Edition this way?
No. The manual Java heap control described here is for Java Edition. Bedrock manages memory automatically and does not expose the same setting.
Do I need to install Java manually?
Not usually. CurseForge says it installs Java automatically, while also allowing you to select another Java executable when needed. Java requirements can vary by Minecraft release, modloader, and modpack, so do not assume one version applies to every setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest first change if a modpack keeps crashing?
Check the pack author’s memory recommendation, verify the F3 maximum, and increase gradually rather than assigning most of the computer’s RAM at once.
Does CurseForge’s RAM slider change a separately hosted server?
No. A separately run server uses its own JVM startup arguments and must be configured independently.
