Most flashing gaming keyboards are not broken. The usual cause is an enabled Breathing, Reactive, Wave, AFK, sleep, or lock-screen lighting effect—or two RGB controllers trying to control the same keyboard.
To stop it, first use the keyboard’s brightness-down or backlight-off control. Then open the keyboard manufacturer’s software and select Static, Fixed Color, Solid, or Off. If the setting keeps changing, check Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting, sleep profiles, onboard memory, and other RGB applications. A hardware fault becomes more likely only when the flashing continues in BIOS or on another computer.
Identify what kind of flashing you have
The pattern usually indicates which setting is responsible:
| What you see | Likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Slow, regular pulsing | Breathing or a similar animated effect | Choose Static, Fixed Color, or Off |
| Only the key you press lights up | Reactive or Trigger lighting | Disable the Reactive or Trigger layer |
| Flashing begins after inactivity | AFK, idle, timeout, or power-management lighting | Turn off the idle effect |
| Flashing happens only when locked, sleeping, or the display is off | A separate sleep, standby, lock-screen, or hardware profile | Change the sleep or lock-screen lighting setting |
| Colors continuously cycle | Wave, Spectrum Cycling, or another animated effect | Replace it with a static effect |
| Flashing occurs with disconnect sounds or missed keystrokes | USB, power, firmware, driver, or hardware trouble | Test a direct USB connection and another computer |
| Only one key or zone flickers | A localized LED, switch, PCB, or connector fault | Test outside Windows and contact support if it persists |
A brief animation when the keyboard is connected or the computer starts can be normal initialization. Persistent flashing before Windows loads is more significant.

Quick fixes: turn the lights off or make them steady
1. Use the physical brightness control
Look for a key marked with a sun, illuminated keyboard, LED, or “Light” symbol. It may require holding Fn or a manufacturer key. Press the shortcut repeatedly, or hold the brightness-down combination, until the light is steady or off.
There is no universal shortcut. For example, SteelSeries documents holding the SteelSeries key with F11 to reduce illumination to off; Razer Blade laptops use repeated Fn + F10; and Logitech documents Fn + F7 for fixed brightness levels on the G413, G512, and G513. These combinations apply only to the specified products, not every LED-backlit keyboard.
- SteelSeries illumination controls
- Razer Blade keyboard-light controls
- Logitech G413, G512, and G513 controls
2. Select a static lighting effect
If you want the backlight on without animation, open the keyboard’s control application and choose Static, Fixed Color, or Solid. Some software offers a speed slider; set it to zero only if the software treats that as a non-animated effect.
For example, Logitech’s lighting controls distinguish Fixed Color from Breathing and other animated modes. HyperX describes Breathing as slow blinking and Trigger as lighting that reacts after a key is pressed, so a flashing pattern does not automatically indicate a defect.
If you want the keyboard completely dark, choose Off or disable device lighting. Save the profile after changing it.
3. Disable every lighting layer
Changing the main effect may not be enough. Check for separate controls named:
- Base effect
- Reactive, Trigger, or key-press effect
- AFK, idle, or timeout effect
- Software lighting
- Hardware or onboard lighting
- Per-game profile
- Lock-screen, sleep, standby, or display-off lighting
SteelSeries specifically separates Base Effect, Reactive Layer, and AFK Effect in GG. Disable each one if you want no flashing. On some SteelSeries devices, Prism can control illumination separately from Engine, so an Engine change may not take effect until Prism control is disabled.
Brand-specific settings
Logitech
Logitech controls vary by model. The Pro Gaming Keyboard has a dedicated backlight control, while Logitech documents Fn + F7 for brightness cycling on the G413, G512, and G513.
In Logitech’s supported lighting software, select the keyboard and open its lighting settings. Choose Fixed Color or disable lighting, then check the active profile and onboard-memory profile. A game-specific profile can restore a Breathing or reactive effect as soon as that game launches.

SteelSeries
Open GG > Engine, select the keyboard, and open its illumination settings. Set the Base Effect to Off or Static, then disable Reactive Layer and AFK Effect. Save the configuration.
If the keyboard still flashes, check whether Prism is controlling the device. SteelSeries documents separate RGB controls for supported devices, and Prism may override an Engine setting.

Corsair
In iCUE, select the keyboard and inspect both software lighting and hardware lighting. Choose a non-animated effect or disable device lighting. Hardware lighting matters when iCUE is not running, when the computer is locked, or when the keyboard falls back to its onboard profile.
Corsair also documents a separate lock-screen lighting control. If the keyboard flashes only at the Windows lock screen, changing the normal desktop effect may not be sufficient.
Razer
In supported versions of Razer Synapse, select the device, open LIGHTING, and inspect Quick Effects or Advanced Effects. Choose a static effect or disable lighting where the model supports it.
Razer’s current documentation distinguishes supported Synapse versions, so do not assume Synapse 3 or Synapse 4 applies to every Razer keyboard. Razer Blade laptops also have separate keyboard-light behavior for display-off and standby states.

ASUS laptops and other keyboards
Do not rely on a universal Armoury Crate shortcut or menu path. Look for Lighting, System, Sleep, Shutdown, or display-off settings for the exact laptop or keyboard model. Built-in laptop lighting may use separate firmware controls for normal use, battery mode, charging, sleep, and shutdown.
Stop Windows 11 from overriding the keyboard
Windows 11 includes Dynamic Lighting, which can control compatible keyboards and other RGB devices. It can also compete with a manufacturer application.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Either turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, or use it as the single controller.
- Open Background light control and inspect the listed applications.
- Move your preferred controller to the top, or close competing RGB utilities.
- Reopen the manufacturer’s software and save the desired profile.
Not every keyboard is compatible with Dynamic Lighting. If the keyboard does not appear there, Windows is less likely to be controlling its lighting through this feature.
Use one of these approaches:
- Manufacturer-controlled setup: turn Dynamic Lighting off and let iCUE, G HUB, GG, Synapse, Armoury Crate, or the relevant application control the keyboard.
- Windows-controlled setup: use Dynamic Lighting as the primary controller and disable or close manufacturer lighting controls that compete with it.
Microsoft explains Dynamic Lighting’s device controls and application priority in its official support guide. Razer also recommends disabling Dynamic Lighting when troubleshooting Chroma synchronization problems.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Stop flashing during sleep, locking, or display-off
If the keyboard is steady during gaming but flashes after inactivity, do not change only the normal-use profile. Look for separate settings named Sleep, Standby, Display Off, Lock Screen, Shutdown, or Idle.
Disable the relevant effect or set that profile to Off. Test manual locking separately from automatic sleep: manufacturers may treat those states differently. Razer notes that display-off and standby behavior can depend on how sleep was initiated and whether Synapse remains active. Corsair likewise documents separate hardware-lighting behavior when software control is unavailable.
If the flashing occurs only when the monitor itself is switched off, distinguish that from Windows turning off the display. They may trigger different device states.
Resolve RGB software conflicts without uninstalling everything
Several applications can attempt to control the same LEDs, including:

- Windows Dynamic Lighting
- Corsair iCUE
- ASUS Armoury Crate or Aura
- MSI Mystic Light or MSI Center
- Gigabyte RGB Fusion or Control Center
- ASRock Polychrome
- Logitech G HUB
- SteelSeries GG
- Razer Synapse
- NZXT CAM
- Game-specific RGB integrations
Do not immediately remove every utility. Choose one primary lighting controller and perform a controlled test:
- Close all RGB utilities except the keyboard manufacturer’s application.
- Disable RGB control in game launchers and motherboard utilities.
- Restart the computer.
- Set a simple Static or Off profile.
- Test normal typing, a game, the lock screen, and sleep.
- Re-enable other utilities one at a time if you need them.
If the flashing returns after enabling one application, that program or its integration is the likely conflict. Corsair lists several motherboard, peripheral, overlay, and RGB programs as possible sources of unwanted lighting changes, but a listed application does not conflict on every computer.
When the setting resets after reboot
Settings that appear correct until the software closes usually point to a profile or controller problem. Possible causes include:

- The change was made only in software mode, not hardware or onboard mode.
- The profile was not saved.
- A game profile loads at startup.
- Windows Dynamic Lighting has higher priority.
- The keyboard returns to a stored default when the control application is closed.
Where supported, save the static or off setting to onboard memory. Then close the control application and test again. If the keyboard returns to flashing, inspect the hardware profile and the startup applications before resetting the device.
Check the connection and wireless mode
For an external keyboard, connect it directly to the computer rather than through a monitor, dock, hub, or unpowered splitter. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard USB port, then test another port. If the keyboard has two USB plugs, connect both as required by its documentation.
Razer’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends direct connection and testing another port. Repeated disconnect sounds, missed keystrokes, or a control application that repeatedly loses the keyboard make a connection or hardware problem more likely than a simple lighting effect.
For a wireless keyboard:
- Charge it and test it in wired mode.
- Reconnect or re-pair the receiver or Bluetooth connection.
- Move the receiver to a direct USB port.
- Compare the lighting in wired and wireless modes.
Low battery can affect some models, but flashing is not a universal low-battery signal. Confirm the behavior in the model’s manual.
Update software and firmware carefully
Install the current control application and firmware intended for the exact keyboard model. Then restart the computer, reopen the application, and save the lighting profile again. If the software offers a repair option, use it before removing drivers or making system changes.
A firmware update may resolve a lighting or device-detection problem, but it is not guaranteed to stop every animation. Do not use unofficial utilities, registry edits, firmware downgrades, or BIOS changes unless the manufacturer specifically documents them for that model.
Reset the keyboard only as a last software step
Reset procedures are model-specific and may erase onboard lighting profiles, macros, key mappings, or other customizations. Find the exact model number printed on the keyboard or packaging and follow its official reset instructions.
For some Corsair keyboards, holding Esc while reconnecting the keyboard triggers a reset, and the lighting flashes when the reset succeeds. This is a Corsair-specific example, not a universal keyboard reset.
After a reset, configure a simple static or off profile and test with competing RGB applications closed.

- MAGNETIC SOFT TOUCH WRIST REST — Designed to seamlessly snap to the keyboard, the soft-touch wrist rest provides ample comfort and support for the wrists that is vital during long periods of use
When flashing indicates a hardware or firmware problem
Test the keyboard outside the normal Windows lighting setup:
- Restart the computer and observe the keyboard before Windows loads.
- If possible, enter BIOS or UEFI and check whether the flashing continues.
- Connect the keyboard to another computer.
- Test it with the manufacturer’s software closed.
A hardware or firmware fault becomes more likely when the same flashing persists in BIOS, on another computer, or after a reset and clean software test. Repeated disconnections, a damaged cable or connector, and flickering limited to one key or zone are additional warning signs.
Do not declare the keyboard defective merely because it flashes at startup. A brief startup animation can be normal. If the problem persists outside Windows, consult the manufacturer’s support or warranty service rather than buying a replacement immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop a keyboard from breathing or pulsing?
Open the keyboard’s lighting software and replace Breathing with Static, Fixed Color, or Off. If the effect returns, check the onboard profile and Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy does my keyboard flash only when the computer is locked?
Lock-screen lighting may use a separate hardware or standby profile. Check the manufacturer’s Lock Screen, Sleep, Standby, or Display Off settings rather than changing only the normal desktop profile.
Why does the keyboard flash but still type normally?
That usually points to a lighting effect, profile, or controller conflict rather than a key-input failure. Test with a static or off profile, then check competing RGB applications.
What does it mean if only one key flashes?
A reactive effect can affect individual pressed keys, but persistent flickering in one key or zone after disabling effects may indicate a localized LED, switch, PCB, or connector fault.
Can a wireless keyboard’s low battery cause flashing?
Some models use lighting to indicate battery status, but the behavior is device-specific. Charge the keyboard and compare wired and wireless operation using the model’s documentation.
