What Asus launched
ASUS describes the Strix G range as its high-performance gaming line below the flagship Strix SCAR tier. The 2026 G16 and G18 are new G615 and G815 model families rather than a simple retailer relabeling of 2025 stock.
#1 Best Overall
- CUTTING-EDGE PERFORMANCE – Experience next-level performance with Windows 11 Home, an Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 275HX, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and featuring DLSS 4 and Max-Q technologies.

The launch platform combines Intel’s Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus with RTX 50-series laptop graphics. ASUS lists the processor with 24 cores, 24 threads, boost speeds of up to 5.5GHz and up to 80W TDP in its product description. The U.S. G16 specification page also lists an Intel AI Boost NPU rated at up to 13 TOPS.
Those are headline limits. Lower-cost configurations can use different processors and GPUs, and the NPU specification alone does not establish a Copilot+ PC classification or a particular gaming advantage.
G16 versus G18: the display is the biggest difference
ROG Strix G16
The U.S. G16 specification lists a 16-inch, 2560×1600 display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, up to 300Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, G-SYNC, Pantone validation and a listed peak brightness of 500 nits. It also supports NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and a MUX switch.
There is an important setup detail: ASUS says the 300Hz mode requires Ultimate GPU mode in Armoury Crate. Standard, Eco and Optimized modes default to 240Hz. Buyers who expect to see 300Hz immediately after setup may therefore need to change the GPU mode—and should remember that more aggressive GPU operation can affect power consumption.

ROG Strix G18
The U.S. G18 listing uses the same 2560×1600 resolution and 16:10 ratio, but pairs its 18-inch screen with a 240Hz Mini LED backlight. ASUS lists a 3ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, G-SYNC, more than 2,000 dimming zones and ACR technology intended to reduce reflections and improve perceived contrast.
The larger screen is useful for games, creative work and desktop-replacement use, while Mini LED can provide more distinctive contrast than a conventional IPS-level panel. It is not automatically the better choice for every player: the G16’s 300Hz mode is more directly aimed at competitive gaming, and its smaller footprint is easier to accommodate on a desk or in a bag.

- HIGH-LEVEL PERFORMANCE – Unleash power with Windows 11 Home, an Intel Core i7 Processor 14650HX, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 Laptop GPU powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and featuring DLSS 4 and Max-Q technologies.
- FAST MEMORY AND STORAGE – Multitask seamlessly with 16GB of DDR5-5600MHz memory and store all your game library on 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
- DYNAMIC DISPLAY AND SMOOTH VISUALS – Immerse yourself in stunning visuals with the smooth 165Hz FHD+ display for gaming, creation, and entertainment. Featuring a new ACR film that enhances contrast and reduces glare.
- STATE-OF-THE-ART ROG INTELLIGENT COOLING – ROG’s advanced thermals keep your system cool, quiet and comfortable. State of the art cooling equals best in class performance. Featuring an end-to-end vapor chamber, tri-fan technology and Conductonaut extreme liquid metal applied to the chipset delivers fast gameplay.
- FULL-SURROUND RGB LIGHTBAR, YOUR WAY – Showcase your style with a 360° RGB light bar that syncs with your keyboard and ROG peripherals. In professional settings, Stealth Mode turns off all lighting for a sleek, refined look.
Regional variation matters here. ASUS’s global G16 page also lists a 16-inch 240Hz Mini LED configuration, while the U.S. page emphasizes the 300Hz IPS-level model. “ROG Strix G16” and “ROG Strix G18” are family names, not complete specifications.
RTX 50-series graphics and high-power operation
The top advertised graphics option is the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. ASUS also lists RTX 5070 and RTX 5060 G16 configurations on its broader specification page. The RTX 5080 example includes 16GB of GDDR7, a 1,550MHz ROG Boost clock and a power configuration of 150W base TGP plus 25W Dynamic Boost.
That 175W maximum is significant when comparing these laptops with thinner RTX 50-series systems. Laptop GPU names should not be treated as direct equivalents to desktop cards, however. Actual performance depends on the exact GPU power limit, cooling profile, drivers, BIOS, memory configuration, game settings, resolution and whether the laptop is connected to AC power.
ASUS advertises NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation. These features require compatible games and drivers. Frame generation can raise the displayed frame rate, but that number does not necessarily represent the same latency or image quality as native rendering.
Cooling, upgrades and everyday ownership
ASUS’s cooling design includes Tri-Fan Technology, an end-to-end vapor chamber, a sandwiched heatsink and a high-airflow chassis. The laptops also use full-surround Aura lighting.
A substantial chassis is a deliberate trade-off in this class. More internal volume can help accommodate high-power components and cooling hardware, but ASUS’s specifications do not establish fan noise, surface temperatures, sustained clock speeds or battery life. Those require independent testing on the exact configuration.

- CUTTING-EDGE PERFORMANCE - Experience next-level performance with an Intel Core i5 Processor 14450HX, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 Laptop GPU powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and featuring DLSS 4 and Max-Q technologies.
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE MEMORY AND STORAGE - Multitask seamlessly with 16GB of DDR5-5600MHz memory and store all your game library on 512GB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
- DYNAMIC DISPLAY — Immerse yourself in smooth visuals with a FHD+ 165Hz display, ideal for gaming, content creation, and entertainment. Featuring a new AGLR film that significantly reduces glare while enhancing contrast, Dolby Vision HDR brings visuals to life with richer, brighter, and more vivid colors. Every image stays sharp and punchy — even from wide viewing angles, so the picture looks just as good off-center as it does straight on.
- ROG INTELLIGENT COOLING - ROG’s advanced thermals keep your system cool, quiet and comfortable. State of the art cooling equals best in class performance. Featuring an end-to-end vapor chamber, tri-fan technology and Conductonaut extreme liquid metal applied to the chipset delivers fast gameplay.

Both models emphasize tool-less access for memory and storage, with fan access also highlighted by ASUS. The G16 includes Q-latch SSD slots. ASUS lists support for up to 64GB of DDR5 memory—described as two 32GB modules—and up to a 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
“Up to 64GB” and “up to 2TB” describe expansion or listed capacity limits, not what every laptop ships with. Check the installed RAM and SSD on the retailer’s exact SKU. Before opening the chassis, consult ASUS’s service documentation and confirm how upgrades affect warranty handling in your market.
Software and platform features
Configurations can ship with Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. Armoury Crate controls performance modes, lighting, device settings and GPU mode selection. NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and the MUX switch are intended to manage the relationship between integrated and discrete graphics.
Some markets may include a PC Game Pass promotion, but eligibility, duration and terms vary by region and time. The same applies to Windows editions and bundled software.

Pricing and availability
ASUS announced the laptops on March 17, 2026, but availability and configurations depend on country. The U.S. ASUS page showed $3,299.99 for the displayed G18 configuration in the retrieved listing. That price should be checked against the live product page because stock, configuration and pricing can change.
The retrieved U.S. G16 specification result displayed an ASUS “starting at” field without a visible amount, so there is no reliable universal G16 launch price to report here. A starting price also would not describe an RTX 5080, 64GB or Mini LED configuration unless those features are included in that particular SKU.

Which 2026 Strix should you buy?
Choose the G16 if you:
- Want a smaller high-power gaming laptop.
- Play competitive games where a 300Hz display can be useful.
- Have limited desk space or expect to use an external monitor.
- Prefer a 16-inch format over an 18-inch desktop replacement.
Choose the G18 if you:
- Want the largest built-in gaming display.
- Prefer the listed 240Hz Mini LED panel and its contrast-focused features.
- Expect the laptop to remain mostly on a desk.
- Value a larger viewing area and keyboard more than portability.
Neither is an obvious fit for someone who carries a laptop to school or work every day, prioritizes long unplugged battery life or wants a particularly thin and quiet machine. A lighter ROG Zephyrus model or another lower-power gaming laptop may be more practical.

Value-focused buyers should also compare discounted 2025 systems and competing Lenovo, Acer, HP and MSI models. A lower-tier RTX 5070 configuration may make more sense for 2560×1600 gaming than paying for an RTX 5080, depending on the price and the buyer’s need for maximum ray-tracing performance. That is a purchasing judgment, not an independent benchmark result.
Checklist before buying
- Confirm the exact model number and regional SKU.
- Check the GPU model and maximum TGP.
- Verify whether the screen is IPS-level or Mini LED.
- Confirm the refresh rate and whether Ultimate GPU mode is required.
- Check installed RAM and SSD capacity, not just the maximum supported amounts.
- Verify the Windows edition.
- Check keyboard layout, power adapter and warranty coverage.
- Confirm return terms and current price.
- Check whether any PC Game Pass offer applies in your country.
What is genuinely new for 2026?
The verifiable changes include the G615 and G815 2026 model families, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus platform, RTX 50-series laptop GPU options, refreshed display configurations, ACR or anti-reflection technology and continued emphasis on tool-less upgrades.
ASUS has not, in the supplied launch material, established a universal performance uplift over the previous generation. It would be premature to call these laptops the fastest, coolest or quietest gaming systems without standardized independent testing.
