The legitimate, currently maintained way to download Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) is the Steam edition. Steam provides the Windows, macOS, Linux and SteamOS builds, while SCS Software says its older legacy version is no longer available for purchase. SCS also offers a free trial for testing the game before buying.
Which ETS2 download should you use?

Download ETS2 on Windows
- Install or open the Steam client for Windows and sign in to your Steam account.
- Search the Steam store for Euro Truck Simulator 2 and purchase the base game, or use the SCS free trial first.
- Open Library, select Euro Truck Simulator 2, choose Install, and select a drive with at least 25 GB of free space.
- Let Steam finish the download. Steam will keep the installed game updated automatically.
Download ETS2 on macOS
SCS Software states that the Mac OS X version is distributed through Steam. On a compatible Mac, install Steam, buy or claim the available ETS2 license, then select Library → Euro Truck Simulator 2 → Install. The current Steam listing specifies macOS 11 (Big Sur) as the minimum operating-system version.
Download ETS2 on Linux or SteamOS
Linux and SteamOS users also install ETS2 from Steam. Install the Linux version of Steam, sign in, open the game’s library page and select Install. The Steam requirements specify Ubuntu 12.04 as the listed baseline, recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers, and caution that MESA may not work reliably. SteamOS uses the Linux build delivered through the Steam client.

Trial, purchase and updates
Trying ETS2 before purchase
SCS Software provides a free trial download from its official download page. Use it to check basic compatibility before committing to the paid Steam edition.
Installing a copy you already own
If ETS2 is already in your Steam account, opening its entry in Library starts the normal Steam installation process. You do not need a separate legacy installer.

Keeping the game current
The Steam version updates automatically through Steam. This is the supported maintenance path; files obtained from unofficial mirrors may be incomplete, unsafe or unable to receive current updates.
What is included in the Steam release?
Steam lists ETS2 as a single-player game with online co-op. The listing also identifies Steam Workshop, Steam Cloud, level-editor support and Remote Play features. Availability of particular functions can depend on the game version, operating system and Steam configuration.

Before you install: a quick checklist
- Use a current Steam account and the official ETS2 store listing.
- Confirm your operating-system version matches the platform requirement.
- Check CPU, graphics hardware, RAM and at least 25 GB of free storage.
- On Linux, install recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers and note Steam’s MESA warning.
- Use the SCS trial if you want a compatibility check before buying.
- Leave Steam online long enough to download updates after installation.
Release context
SCS Software released Euro Truck Simulator 2 on 18 October 2012. The supported download today is the continually updated Steam edition rather than the discontinued legacy release.
