If Xbox detects the wrong profile, sign out of Steam in the Steam launcher, sign in to the intended account, then restart the Xbox flow.
This connection is not a universal license, save, achievement, or cross-progression transfer. Those features are controlled separately by each game and its publisher.
Link Steam to Xbox for friends and social features
- Open the Xbox account-linking flow and sign in to your Xbox account if prompted.
- Review the Steam account Xbox has detected. The detected profile matters: authorizing the wrong one can connect the wrong social identity.
- If it is incorrect, sign out of Steam in the Steam launcher, sign in to the intended Steam account, and start the Xbox linking flow again.
- Choose the link or continue confirmation for the displayed Steam account.
- Finish authorization. The Xbox page indicates when a Steam account is already linked and exposes an unlink route.
The stated purpose of this Xbox connection is discovering and following Steam friends. A friend may not appear as a suggestion until that person has linked their own account.

The Xbox PC app can show Xbox, Game Pass, installed games from other PC storefronts, and social connections in one view. That combined view does not show that a Game Pass entitlement transfers to Steam.

If your real goal is cross-progression
Use the game’s or publisher’s account-linking screen rather than relying on the Xbox social link. First identify which account currently stores the save, purchases, and other progress. Then check whether the game supports Steam–Xbox cross-progression and what happens when an account is unlinked or connected elsewhere.
Example: Activision account linking
Activision lists Xbox (including Game Pass and Microsoft Store) and Steam as platform accounts that can be linked to an Activision account. Its documented flow is:

- Sign in to the platform account.
- Sign in to Activision in the same browser.
- Open Linked Accounts and select Link Account.
- Complete email verification if requested.
- Authorize the connection on the platform provider’s website.
Activision says only one account per provider can be connected to an Activision account. For its crossplay-enabled games that support cross-progression, progress is stored on the Activision account—not transferred simply because the Steam and Xbox identities are socially linked.
Activision also says individual platform accounts may be unlinked once every 12 months, and some requests can be blocked for security or enforcement reasons. Connecting a platform account to a different Activision account does not move the old progression to the new one; reconnecting the original Activision account restores access to its progression and owned content. Those rules apply to Activision services and should not be assumed for another publisher.

Why publisher accounts matter
Microsoft PlayFab’s developer guidance treats Steam and Xbox identity linking as a game-level operation involving account conflicts and progress reconciliation. It advises getting the player’s consent before moving an identity already associated with another account. In Microsoft Learn’s wording: “If your title requires the cross-platform identity to remain linked to the current user (for example, the game requires Xbox sign-in and expects the entity’s Xbox link to match the currently signed-in Xbox account), a successful platform login alone isn’t sufficient.” This is developer guidance, not a universal consumer procedure.
Troubleshooting
Xbox detects the wrong Steam account
Sign out of the Steam launcher, sign in to the correct profile, and restart the Xbox linking flow. Verify the profile again before authorizing.

The page says the account is already linked
Confirm that the displayed Steam account is yours. If you need to change it, use the unlink route shown by Xbox, then review the target game’s own unlink rules separately. Xbox’s social unlink action does not promise to unlink accounts from every publisher service.
The linking flow returns an error
Retry later, as the visible Xbox guidance recommends. The available guidance does not identify one general cause for every linking error, so persistent failures require Xbox support or the relevant game publisher’s support channel.

Your game shows a progress conflict
Stop before confirming a new link. Determine which publisher account contains the existing saves and purchases. A platform identity connected to another publisher account may not merge progress and can interrupt access to progress held by the original account.

- Want to find Steam friends on Xbox? Use Xbox’s social account-linking flow.
- Want shared saves or progression? Use the game publisher’s account system and confirm support for that specific title.
- Want to play a game bought on one storefront on another? Check ownership rules; social linking does not transfer a license.
- Already have progress? Check unlink, relink, and account-conflict rules before changing anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a game free on PC if I own it on Xbox?
Not from the Steam–Xbox social link alone. Whether you can install or play it on PC depends on that title’s Microsoft, Xbox Play Anywhere, Game Pass, or separate Steam licensing rules.
Will linking Steam and Xbox merge my saves?
No universal merge occurs. Save sharing and cross-progression depend on the specific game and the publisher account that stores its progress.
