That was a crowdfunding offer, not a permanent retail price or an indication that units shipped immediately; the launch coverage projected July 2024 shipping and reported a later base price of $1,099. In 2026, treat the $799 figure as historical context and verify the exact configuration, stock, seller support and final checkout total before buying.
What launched on June 13, 2024?
The X1 Mini was a Windows 11 gaming tablet with detachable controllers rather than a conventional one-piece handheld. OneXPlayer announced it in late May and opened orders through Indiegogo on June 13. The campaign described July 2024 as the expected shipping window, so placing a crowdfunding order was not the same as buying an in-stock retail unit. See the original launch report at Android Headlines.
That distinction matters in any price comparison: an announcement, a crowdfunding campaign, retail availability and actual delivery are separate events. The July date was a historical estimate attached to the 2024 campaign, not a current delivery promise.
Was $799 the real price?
Yes, but only within the launch promotion. The $799 figure was an early-bird Indiegogo price described as available for a limited period of less than three days at publication. The same launch coverage said the base model would later be priced at $1,099.

Current pricing is not cleanly established by the surfaced official store page. Its refurbished listing displays a $499 sale price for a 16GB/512GB variant, while other configurations are marked sold out and the page also shows conflicting subtotal and strike-through figures. Check the cart, shipping destination, warranty and return terms rather than treating that page as a definitive current price: OneXPlayer’s listing.
What makes the X1 Mini different?
The device has three intended roles:
- Handheld: attach the game controllers to the tablet’s sides.
- Tablet: remove the controllers and use the 8.8-inch Windows display on its own.
- Mini-laptop: attach the magnetic keyboard for typing and light productivity.
This flexibility is the product’s central idea. It can suit a traveler who wants one Windows computer for games, emulation and work, but it also means more parts, connection points, charging considerations and setup than an integrated handheld such as the Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

Memory, storage and accessories
What can be upgraded?
LPDDR5X memory is onboard, so the practical user upgrade is storage. The launch report described an SSD compartment behind the kickstand: remove the small hatch instead of disassembling the whole tablet. Shut the device down fully and disconnect it from power before opening it. OneXPlayer warned against changing the SSD while the device was connected to power, even when switched off, because of possible component damage. Confirm the exact 2230 or 2242 support for your hardware revision before ordering a replacement.
What came in the launch package?
The 2024 campaign report listed a magnetic keyboard, wireless mouse, USB hub, protective bag, bumper defender and pre-applied screen film as included or campaign benefits. Those items should not be assumed for every later retail or refurbished listing; bundles vary by seller, configuration and promotion. Confirm that controllers, their connector and any wireless-use accessory are included in the specific offer.

Gaming performance: what to expect
Ryzen 7 8840U and Radeon 780M provide a capable integrated-PC platform for indie games, older PC titles, emulation, Windows-native Game Pass and cloud gaming. Modern demanding games generally require reduced settings, a lower internal resolution and often upscaling. The 2560×1600 panel is valuable for desktop work, lighter games and sharp text, but native resolution should not be treated as the normal target for new AAA releases.
A 2026 review places demanding play around 720p to 900p as the sensible range, with results changing substantially according to power mode, cooling profile, drivers, patches, settings and the game itself: HandheldPicker’s 2026 review. No single frame-rate number applies across those variables.

Game Pass, emulation and Windows
Windows provides native access to PC Game Pass, standard launchers, desktop applications and a broad emulator library, subject to each emulator and game’s compatibility. The trade-off is Windows handheld maintenance: updates, launcher friction, driver management and occasional controller troubleshooting are part of ownership.
Oculink and desktop use
Oculink can connect an external GPU for a more desktop-like setup. That requires a compatible enclosure, graphics card, power supply and cable, so it is an expansion path rather than a simple handheld feature. The magnetic keyboard and removable controllers make the X1 Mini more useful as a small Windows workstation than an ordinary console-shaped handheld.
Who should consider it?
Good fit
- People who want a large screen in a handheld PC.
- Windows users who need native Game Pass or desktop software.
- Emulation players who value display size.
- Travelers seeking one device for gaming and light productivity.
- Buyers interested in detachable controls or a future Oculink eGPU setup.
- Users who prefer a tablet-like design to a small integrated handheld.
Poor fit
- Anyone seeking the lowest-cost PC handheld.
- Buyers who want console-like simplicity and suspend/resume reliability.
- People prioritizing maximum battery life or minimum weight.
- Players expecting demanding AAA games at 2560×1600.
- Users unwilling to manage Windows settings, drivers and launchers.
How it compares with alternatives
| Alternative | Why choose it | What the X1 Mini does differently |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | Lower-friction SteamOS experience, suspend/resume and value-oriented handheld gaming | X1 Mini offers Windows-native flexibility, a larger tablet-style screen and detachable controls |
| ASUS ROG Ally X | Conventional integrated Windows handheld design | X1 Mini is less traditional but adds tablet and keyboard modes |
| Lenovo Legion Go | Large display and detachable controllers in a recognizable handheld layout | X1 Mini goes further toward a tablet/mini-laptop form factor |
These are design and use-case comparisons, not universal rankings. Current prices for the alternatives are not established here and should be checked on their respective official pages.
Buying checklist in 2026
- Confirm whether the offer is new, refurbished or campaign stock.
- Verify the exact RAM, SSD capacity and included accessories.
- Check that the final cart total matches the advertised price for your region.
- Read the applicable warranty, return, tax and shipping terms before payment.
- Confirm controller hardware and any required connector for wireless use.
- For an SSD upgrade, match the supported form factor and follow the unplugged-device procedure.
Verdict
The X1 Mini was an unusual and potentially useful Windows tablet-handheld when its Indiegogo campaign opened on June 13, 2024. Its appeal is the combination of an 8.8-inch high-resolution display, detachable controls, keyboard support, replaceable storage and Oculink—not simply its ability to play PC games. The $799 early-bird price was attractive only during that limited launch window. A current buyer should judge a verified configuration and seller package on its own terms, and choose it primarily for Windows and 3-in-1 flexibility rather than for the cheapest or simplest handheld experience.
