Historical note: The Android Headlines roundup titled “Top 10 Best Android Apps & Games — NBA — October 2018” is labeled for October 2018 but displays a publication date of May 21, 2019. It targeted the 2018–19 season, mixed utilities, games, wallpapers and shopping, and explicitly said the ten picks were not ranked. App availability, licensing, prices and features may have changed since then.
This guide explains what each selection was meant to do, separates unlike categories, and identifies the limitations a reader should consider today.
What the original list covered
| Fan need | 2018 recommendation |
|---|---|
| Official news, scores and highlights | NBA App |
| Simulation-style mobile basketball | NBA LIVE Mobile Basketball |
| Score alerts | Sports Alerts – NBA Edition |
| Arcade basketball | NBA JAM |
| Card collecting | NBA Dunk |
| Trivia | Basket 2K18 – NBA Trivia Quiz |
| Franchise management | NBA General Manager 2018 |
| Team wallpapers | NBA Wallpapers |
| High-resolution wallpapers and GIFs | 4K NBA Wallpapers |
| Licensed merchandise | Fanatics NBA |
The original article did not publish a shared scoring method, device testing, privacy review or a ranking. A score-alert utility and a merchandise store therefore should be judged by different standards from a basketball game.
Best for official NBA coverage: NBA App
In the period roundup, the official NBA App was the broadest information choice: news, videos, favorite-team and player coverage, previews, recaps and in-game or post-game highlights. League Pass subscribers could also access additional content, including NBA TV streaming, subject to subscription terms.

- Wilson NBA Authentic Indoor/Outdoor Basketball - Brown, Size 7 - 29.5"
- Dual Depth Technology: A re-engineered channel creates a deeper pocket to improve grip and enhance your feel for the game.
- Moisture Management Cover: Enhanced cover wicks away moisture to create extreme grip, superior flexibility and softer touch
- Ever Bounce: Combines an internal sponge construction, performance windings and balance patch for consistent bounce every time.
- Air Retention: A specialized inflation retention lining creates longer lasting air retention.
The modern NBA App is a different product from its 2018-era description. NBA documentation says a free NBA ID can provide personalized highlights, favorite-team news, recommendations and rewards, while League Pass can be purchased in the app. See the current platform and account details at NBA’s Global NBA App support page.
League Pass is not every live game
As observed on the NBA’s current pricing page, seasonal League Pass was listed at $79.99 and League Pass Premium at $114.99. Those figures are market-, season- and promotion-dependent, not 2018 prices. Standard supports live and on-demand out-of-market games on one device; Premium adds features such as up to three devices, offline viewing, no commercials, in-arena streams, alternate broadcasts and multiview. U.S. blackouts and nationally televised-game restrictions still apply. Check NBA League Pass and the restrictions guide before subscribing. Purchases made through Google Play or another store may need to be managed through that same billing channel; NBA explains the options at its purchase-support page.
Best for a conventional mobile basketball game: NBA LIVE Mobile Basketball
The original description presented EA’s NBA LIVE Mobile Basketball as a 3D game with live events, player leveling and a persistent internet requirement. The current Google Play listing calls it EA SPORTS NBA LIVE Mobile and describes NBA Tour challenges, limited-time events, player-item progression, Rise to Fame and Leagues.
The listing also states that the game contains ads and in-app purchases, requires an internet connection, and can offer virtual currency and randomized virtual items. EA may retire online features with notice, so purchases and progress depend on a service that can change. Verify the current listing at Google Play; its current download count, rating and update history should not be projected back to 2018.

- Wilson NBA Official Game Basketball - Brown, Size 7 - 29.5"
- NBA OFFICIAL: The official ball of the NBA featuring the world-famous NBA logoman
- GENUINE HORWEEN LEATHER COVER: Made from 100% genuine leather cover that will initially feel slick to the touch. Playing with the basketball will loosen up the leather, giving the ball more grip
- AIR RETENTION: Inflation retention lining creates longer lasting air retention
- NBA PRO SEAMS: New channel construction suited to player preference
Best for fast score notifications: Sports Alerts – NBA Edition
This utility was selected for configurable score alerts, alert history, live play-by-play, a live-scores widget and frequent updates. It suits a fan who needs low-bandwidth notifications rather than video or gameplay.
The original article did not independently measure alert speed, accuracy, battery consumption or widget reliability. On modern Android, notification permission and battery-optimization settings can delay background alerts, and an abandoned app may no longer handle current schedules or notification rules.
Best for arcade play: NBA JAM
NBA JAM occupied a different niche from NBA LIVE: exaggerated physics, over-the-top action and quick head-to-head matches rather than realistic simulation or roster progression. The article mentioned computer opponents, online multiplayer and Android TV support.
Those are historical claims about the version covered. The source does not establish current Android compatibility, server status, pricing or licensing, so check the store listing in your country before treating it as a current recommendation.
Rank #3
- Wilson NBA Forge Indoor/Outdoor Basketball - Brown, Size 7 - 29.5"
- PURE FEEL COVER: Pro-level feel and durability
- AIR RETENTION: Inflation retention lining creats longer lasting air retention
- NBA PRO SEAMS: New channel construction suited to player preference
- NBA OFFICIAL: Wilson is the official basketball of the NBA. This ball features official NBA branding coupled with the iconic Wilson script.
Best for collecting: NBA Dunk
NBA Dunk was described as a Panini trading-card game using NBA-licensed content. Players could collect and trade cards, trade up to 16 cards at once, and receive daily coins and free packs.
That is a collection experience, not a basketball simulator. Card games can include time gates, randomized rewards or spending pressure; the 2018 description gives no odds, spending limits, privacy analysis or evidence that the service remains operational. Treat the title and license as period-specific until a current listing confirms otherwise.
Best for trivia: Basket 2K18 – NBA Trivia Quiz
The quiz offered four modes—Play Game, Level Game, Survival and Category—with questions about NBA players and statistics. It was free to play with advertising.
Its “2K18” branding dates the content. The original article provides no evidence about question accuracy, difficulty, update frequency or coverage of later seasons, and it does not establish present availability. It is best understood as a historical casual quiz pick.

Best for franchise management: NBA General Manager 2018
This selection targeted fans who wanted to run a franchise: signing and trading players, developing rookies, setting lineups and handling coaching decisions. The article described it as NBA-licensed.
The 2018 season label is a major longevity warning. Rosters, rules, licenses and online services can become stale quickly, and the source does not show that the game was updated beyond that season. Do not assume it works on current Android versions or that its licensing remains active.

NBA Wallpapers
The article described a high-quality wallpaper library that could be downloaded or applied, and reported a 4.9 Play Store rating after more than 50 ratings at the time. That rating is a historical snapshot, not a current quality guarantee.
4K NBA Wallpapers
This companion pick emphasized 4K images, GIFs, five themes and options to set or download wallpapers. “4K” can describe the source file rather than the resolution rendered on a particular phone, and animated images may use additional battery.
Best Value
- Wilson NBA Authentic Series Basketball - Outdoor, Size 7 - 29.5"
- NBA OFFICIAL: Wilson is the official basketball of the NBA. This ball features official NBA branding coupled with the iconic Wilson script
- TACKSKIN COVER: New cushion layer offers ultimate grip in all weather conditions
- AIR RETENTION: Inflation retention lining creats longer lasting air retention
- NBA PRO SEAMS: New channel construction suited to player preference
For either app, check developer identity, permissions, advertising, image provenance and current Play availability. Wallpaper apps can disappear, break image links or request access unrelated to setting a background; NBA branding does not by itself prove that every image is licensed.
Best for merchandise: Fanatics NBA
Fanatics NBA was the commercial entry: team-personalized browsing for officially licensed apparel and goods, including brands such as Nike and New Era. The article also said it had discounts and promotions and no ads at that time.
Inventory, prices, sizes, shipping and promotions change constantly, and the original app may have been replaced by a broader Fanatics application. Use the current Fanatics NBA store rather than assuming the 2018 app remains unchanged. Promotional codes can have exclusions, and team-specific items may sell out or face delays.
Which type of fan should start where?
| If you want… | Start with… | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Official news and highlights | NBA App | Live games may require League Pass or another broadcaster. |
| Out-of-market live games | NBA App plus League Pass | Blackouts and national-TV restrictions apply. |
| A conventional NBA game | EA SPORTS NBA LIVE Mobile | Ads, in-app purchases and an internet connection are required. |
| Arcade basketball | NBA JAM | Its style is deliberately less realistic. |
| Score notifications | Sports Alerts – NBA Edition | Background settings can affect delivery. |
| Trivia | Basket 2K18 | Season-dated content and uncertain availability. |
| Franchise management | NBA General Manager 2018 | Season-specific and potentially outdated. |
| Team wallpapers | NBA Wallpapers or 4K NBA Wallpapers | Check permissions, licensing and battery impact. |
| Official merchandise | Fanatics NBA store | Prices and inventory are dynamic. |
What to check before installing an old recommendation
- Confirm that the app is listed in your country and supports your Android version.
- Read the current developer name, update date, permissions, privacy disclosures and billing model.
- For online games, determine whether login, servers and cloud saves are still functioning.
- For subscriptions, verify blackout rules, billing channel and cancellation route before paying.
- For wallpapers, inspect image licensing, advertising and whether animated content affects battery life.
The Bottom Line
The 2018 list remains useful as a snapshot of NBA fan software for the 2018–19 season, not as a current ranking. The NBA App is the durable starting point for official information, while League Pass, EA SPORTS NBA LIVE Mobile and Fanatics address specific paid or commercial needs. The remaining games and wallpaper tools should be treated as historical picks until their present availability and behavior are independently confirmed.
